While the BMC is known for Mini as success in 1960's motorsports they did have
some success in Sport Car and Endurance Racing as well and without a doubt,
most of the success came due Donald Healey's company supporting and building his
sports cars to BMC platforms. BMC Competition department could provide resources and
logistics which Healey could not otherwise have. Probably even more than that, BMC
could source talented race drivers able to drive anything fast with four wheels on
it and it was pretty usual to see drivers with Mini-fame to drive bigger Healey sports
cars. Unfortunately, Mini grew so big in racing that after 1965, Abington decided to
consentrate more closely just developing Mini and the sports cars were more or less
Healey's own area without support from BMC.
This mod tries to represent the Big Healey more closely as they were raced as Works
race cars. Mod includes two real world cars, with close specifications to exact race,
both from 1965 World Sport Car Championship:
- Targa Florio entry #108, driven by Timo Makinen
(1967 European Rally Champion, with Cooper S)
- Sebring 12 Hours entry #34, driven by Warwick Banks
(1964 European Touring Car Champion, with Cooper S)
First car features "tulip" gearbox which was used in Makinen's car in Targa Florio 1965
and is short ratio 4 speed gearbox developed for rallying. It features overdrive that is
switchable on 3rd and 4th gear and as game engine does not support Overdrives exactly, car
in game features 6 speed gearbox. Car has also the biggest homologated fuel tank, which is
114 liters. That's quite improvment from original 80 liter one.
Second car fetures "sebring" gearbox which was developed for endurance racing and is also
short ratio 4-speed box, but overdrive is longer and is switchable only in 4th gear.
Technically #34 has higher top speed, but has slower acceleration and less wheel driven
torque, which is needed in rallying and hill climbs. Sebring car has 90 liter fuel tank.
Big thanks to Ga2jo, Christoph and Cartman78 making the skins to get the cars authentic. :)
