AutoSimSport's latest 194 page sim racing nirvana of a publication is out.
http://www.autosimsport.net/index2/index.php
In it they name their 2008 simulator of the year and it's iRacing.
"No best of is complete without a Gary Player quote: In Kaemmer's case, the better he gets the luckier he is. Consider, Papyrus goes under, and Kaemmer is resurrecteed by a (then!) billionaire who loves to sim-race. The result took four years or so to code, hit the download pipes in June, and instantly became the best simulator any of us have ever played. It lacks weather, it lacks, atmosphere, some still hate Kaemmer and co. for their days as FIRST it's expensive, the community sometimes feels as if its comprised of bots, it lacks a sense of fun, and it simply towers above every and anything out there. Will 2009 see anyone match iRacing? Doubtful: Competiting against Dave Kaemmer's genuis and John Henry's pocketbook is foohardy-the sim of the century. Welcome Home Mr. Kaemmer and we like your new friends.
Some other quotes from the Volume 5.
"It really is GPL all over again when I fire up iRacing and there is a lot of work to be done by the competion to stay in this game. - LxMartini OpEd Pg 5
"Ultimately, the only thing we (simulation racers) share with the gaming industry is that we use computers to fuel our sport. It is why iRacing is to be found not at gaming conventions, but at racing conventions. We (sim racers) are part of the motor-racing world, even though there, too, we don't quite fit. Still, that is our only viable future ... Now, whether John Henry's acoountants agree with that is another matter alltogether". - Andy Mahood pg 11 - Explaning his farewell article in PC Gamer pronouncing iRacing racing sim of the year, not GRID as PC Gamer had awarded...
Some good stuff on the Speedway Expo 2009 - pg 18
Hot Seat Chassis-On The Spot Review - Pg 20
Article on Simbin's Lizard - "Lizard will be the future of SimBin, I'm sure." pg 57
Le Mans veteran Soheil Ayari sits down with iRacing for a few hours with the Radical at Silverstone and comes away with some surprising results... You can download his setup at http://www.alain-lefebvre.com/archives/189 - Pg 68
RacePro review - Naked Ambition. pg 125
NekKar Pro 1.0.3 Review - pg 140
Retro - The Life of GPL - "Comparatively speaking paying $25 for a track in iRacing is small fry compared to the flight sim genre, and yet, many in the sim-racing community-used to having the free tracks thrown at them iva rFactorCentral-will instinctively fling when asked to pay for sim-racing content. "How much will I drive it? Will I move up to the next class as quickly as possible and never drive it again? Is it worth $25?". All these questions are natural: Whilst $25 rarely breaks the bank, it is, at the same time, about what you would spend if you were to buy SimBin's latest sim.
But where will this frugality leave the sim-racing world........?
NSS Mod for rFactor - pg 143
Race2Play article - pg 81
