View Full Version : New wheels in which file?

I am making a new 3d wheel for the Mini cooper, I know there are 3 types but want to add the new wheel to make 4.
if I put them it the wheels.gtl file could the hdc? file be modified to use the fourth wheel or should I just put everything in the specific car file.
If you are not sure I can experiment of course.
thanks.

I think the best way to do it, is have them as standalone with their own GMT files. I can make those for you if you like.

I think the best way would be to offer the wheels for people to drop in the car file of their choice, I just wondered if anyone knew if this was possible, I haven't quite finished them yet.
What is it you are offering to make? I can do standalones and the gmt's are done.

I think you have to alter the GEN STRING in the .car file, I had to do that a few times to change certain cars wheels.
You'll probably have to put the wheels in the .gtr file that contains the other wheels and give it a specific name.
I'm no expert so!!!

You do need to change the GenString of the car but you do not need to have the wheel .gmt files in a .gtl or .gtr file. For the GTR 1 and 2 games they have used these search paths in their .cas files :
SearchPath=<TEAMDIR>..\
SearchPath=<TEAMDIR>
SearchPath=<VEHDIR>
and I expect that they did this for GTL also so you should be able to place the new wheels in the GameData/Teams/TC-65/Mini Cooper S directory and any of the Minis will be able to use them. I advise against placing them with the existing wheels because you should never modify the game's files and if you make a new .gtl or .gtr file for your new wheels then you will need a new .cas file and that can be problematic.
By the way, character one, as in <1>, selects the wheels for the Minis and there are three styles defined in the game so new styles must start at four.
This is what my experiments have shown so hopefully it will work for you.

thanks i'm still experimenting, i'll crack it eventually.

Sorry without quotes, I didn't realise you were replying to my post.
If you've done the GMT files for the wheels then they are done and ready. Just offer them as a standalone wheel. If you're curious, just have a look at the standalone wheels that the brace and myself have done for the TR4.
I'm not sure that Gomez Adams' method will work for GTL otherwise people like PrinzTT, grojosan, Aad, and many others would be doing it his way.

All I can say is it should work because of the search paths.
SearchPath=<TEAMDIR>..\ = GTL/Gamedata/Teams/TC-65/Mini Cooper S
SearchPath=<TEAMDIR> = GTL/Gamedata/Teams/TC-65/Mini Cooper S/Car's Team Name
SearchPath=<VEHDIR> = GTL/Gamedata/Teams
As you can see nearly the entire directory tree is covered except for the TC-65 directory which is why the game has no files at that level. Meshes and textures in any of the directories listed above will be accessible to the game so it should work. I don't know for certain that GTL uses those paths but they (Blimey/Simbin) did in GTR1 and GTR2 and this works in rfactor too.

What do you change the gen string number to?
I created new wheel gmt's and all the relavent dds's with a "style4" string.
Put em in the folder as you have done with the TR4 wheels and nothing happens.
any ideas?

Now change the first character in your car's GenString to a 4 and you should be jammin.
BTW - the GenString characters can also be letters and anything else that is legal in a windoze file name.

deleted em all, starting again.

Doing it my way there is no need to change anything in the genstring, you just put the wheel .dds files and the wheel GMT files in the particular cars folder that you want them to be on. I think the genstring only works if the wheels are packed in a GTL file. And in the case of the Mini it would be th AUSTIN_MINI_WHEEL.GTL file. Why not make a back up, and give Gomez's idea a try.
I don't know for certain that GTL uses those paths but they (Blimey/Simbin) did in GTR1 and GTR2 and this works in rfactor too.
I think you will find there are a few differences between GTL and GTR1 & 2

Yes, there are a few differences but this is not one of them. The wheels I have made for other cars and used this way worked fine but I have never made any for the Mini because I never use it.
It is very easy to verify this with an experiment. Copy the Mini's wheels.gtl file to a safe place and then extract a few of one style of meshes from it, place them in the Mini Cooper S directory, remove them from the .gtl file, and see if all of the cars still load. Or you can be specific : pick your car of choice and note which style of wheels it uses (character 1 of the GenString) then do the experiment with that set of wheels.
FWIW, I prefer this method to copying wheel sets all over the place. I must have thirty or forty GT40s and most of them use custom wheels and this is how I deal with them. Actually, I do not have one set of custom wheels in any car's directory but that's just me. Everyone can certainly do what they want with their game. I try to save space where I can so that I can still write my installation to a DVD. I'm right on the edge of their 4.7GB capacity as it is.

Well I'll definitely give it a go, because like you I hate all those extra files in my cars.:up:

I have given up with the new wheels for the Mini.
It is a problem with the new 3d cooper gmt's and I can't find the problem.
The dds files were no problem.

FYI I just removed all the style 2 gmt's and the style 2 dds files from the Mini wheels GTL and placed them in the GTL/Gamedata/Teams/TC-65/Mini Cooper S folder, the genstring was set to 2 and it DOES work.
Ok.
Thanks Gomez.
I will have another go at making the GMT's

Thank you for doing the experiment. That verifies that the search paths are as listed. ;)

You have to name your new wheels AUSTIN_MINI_WHEEL_STYLE4_LR_.GMT and so on for the four wheels. In the .car file, the genstring number (I dont know which one it is for the Mini wheels) should be changed to 4. Now, you can either just drop your .gmt's and .dds files into GTL\GameData\Teams\TC-65\Mini Cooper S folder or you can unpack AUSTIN_MINI_WHEELS.gtl and add your new files and then pack them up agan.

Did you not read the previous posts in this thread ? We convered all of that previously along with the fact that wheels for the Mini are selected with character 1 of the GenString. Also the point that adding things into any .gtl file from the game is a really bad idea if you intend to share your work with others. If everyone started doing that with their add-ons then new stuff from one person would overwrite stuff from someone else and there would soon be a lot of annoyed people.

I did all the renaming stuff but still it didn't work.
I modified the gmt's by replacing the minilite spokes with a new 3d cehtre and mapped that to the texture that the spokes used but something just wasn't working right.
I'll get there in the end.

example:
------------- .car -----------
GenString=2314
------------- foo ----------
------------- .cas ----------
Instance=LFTIRE
{
Moveable=True
<SPIN>MeshFile=YOUR_WHEEL_LF_A_STYLE<3>.gmt CollTarget=False HATTarget=False LODIn=(0.00) LODOut=(20.0)
------------- foo -----------
in this instance the GenString=2314 , therefore your car will have:
YOUR_WHEEL_LF_A_STYLE_1.gmt
hope this helps
