hi,

in the plr file, there is a line called: compressed textures! is 1 higher/better or 0?

I run GTR2 and GT Legends, both on highest car texture settings.
In both my .plr files the Compressed Textures is set to 1.

A setting of 1 means that textures are compressed, a setting of 0 means they are not compressed.

Uncompressed textures are always better image quality than compressed. But I don't think any of our video cards could handle Evo running in uncompressed textures.

If you have FRAPS, please try running it with a setting of 0 and tell us how much of a frame hit you get.

I'm guessing you will get maybe 10fps :)

If you have a graphics card with at least 512 megabytes of ram, turn off the texture compression. You'll get sharper textures. I didn't notice any drop in frame rate either, even when I had an old 7900 GTX in my machine.

SimBin really should put more options in the graphics settings menu. The first thing I do when I get a title from SimBin, is make a profile, then edit the .plr file in notepad to my liking.

Well, I went and gave this a try last night. It seems that this actually boosted my frames and not only that but I don't appear to have any lag or stuttering issues anymore! At first I thought this was just in my head but I have been running Mosport, exclusively, for the last two weeks simply because I have had some amazing races with the AI at 102%.

Anyhow, prior to changing the compression values I would get on the grid with 24 cars (including myself, graphics are set to display 25 cars at all times), graphics absolutely maxxxed out, and would see ~65-70 fps at start with lots of stuttering getting into T1. Once the field spread out I would avg. ~120 fps or so.

Now after the change I got on the grid with the same settings and was seeing ~110-115 fps at start and T1 went absolutely flawless even with dust and what not being kicked up. Mind you both times I was starting in 24th place so I was seeing all cars going into T1. Even watching the replay of my race with the tv camera view produced ZERO lag, not even a micostutter!!! I was so impressed that I played EVO until 3 a.m. this morning and almost overslept for work!!

By the way, this is run on an x6800 @ 4 Ghz, sapphire 4870 1gb @ stock speeds, on a DFI LT x48 (DDR2 version), LG 19" @ 1280x1024.

My Ati tray tools profile setting is:
AA - application controlled (set to 3 in Race07 config)
edge dectection - enabled
Adaptive AA - set as quality, and 3 for sharpness
Aniso - set to 16x and trilinear
texture - high quality
mipmap - high quality
vertical sync - disabled
Aniso optimization - enabled
Trilinear Filter Optimization - -enabled
Cat A.I. - high
Flip queue - 0
all other settings are what they were at default

edit: I forgot I am also running some different "dll" file found here ( I have been using this since it's release last year): http://www.nogripracing.com/details.php?filenr=14811

hmm, worth a look. I would still think there would be a drop in frames, but this is interesting :)

I have just tried this and i can definately see an improvement in graphics with it set to "0" - with no real loss in fps on my system at least. I have a HD4870 1gb BTW.

Were you experiencing any kind of lag or stuttering prior to this? In particular, when you watch the replay in tv camera mode did you have stuttering and did it fix this? Thanks for the reply!!

That goes against all logic lol but I will give it a go

Yup, works for me too. Better visuals and a better frame rate ...

Were you seeing any stuttering prior to implementing this? I am just trying to get a feel as to whether this is fixing my stuttering or if this just happened to be coincidence. Thanks for the reply!!

Also, what video card do you have, and how much memory is on it?

Hi repsol23, I'm using at GTX260 with 896MB on board RAM. I wasn't experiencing any issues with stuttering but there is a marked improvement in FPS performance and the visuals seem crisper.

Thanks for the heads-up with this.

I just happened to stumble across this one the other day!! I saw the thread and tried the change just for kicks and was happy with the results. It would be great if this fixes stuttering for those plagued by it! Guess only time will tell.

Update : :-( I like to get scientific about these things so I ran some tests and took some screenshots. There's no performance after all using my card. I ran the tests with compression on and off. The screenshots don't show any improvement in quality either. I was obviously changing too many things at once .... including my monitor settings ...

Results with vsync off are :

With compression and with Wombat778's FPS fix

Without compression and with Wombat778's fix

Without compression and without Wombat778's fix

I'm going to try this on a track where the cars are closer on the track to see whether there's an improvement on the look of the cars with compression off.

Hopefully it will help those with stuttering issues ....

I'm still really pleased about the massive performance boost I get from the fps fix though.

Unfortunately, I don't have any screens of my racing before the change in settings so I can't verify it with any pics. If it wasn't for the fact that I had been running that track, say 20 times in the last two weeks with each session being 15 laps, soooo much I probably wouldn't have noticed the change too much. From running the same track that often I already knew where the hesitations were in certain corners and how much fps I was having on the starting grid (I always like to start at the back of the pack and work my way up). So after the change I immediately noticed the differences but I can't say graphically how much, it just looked sharper and the colors looked richer, if that makes any sense!

By the way, what exactly is the FPS fix that you speak of? I can't say I remember seeing that posted anywhere.

Hi, the FPS fix is for NVIDIA cards only, but the link is here:

http://www.virtualr.net/?s=wombat778

It's supposed to work best with the 8800GT and not with GTR Evo either, but that's not my experience at all fortunately.

I also noted that you're using the enbseries mod which uses a d3d9.dll. This also uses a d3d9.dll so it wouldn't be able to co-exist (not that it would matter as you have anATI card). You don't seem to need any further boost with the performance you're getting with your card!

Thanks for the info! While my card will bench as high as 825 on the core I have been content with running it at stock speeds as all my games play great. I can't wait to get home tonight and try my other favorite track, Laguna Seca, since I had horrible stuttering on that particular track.

There's also an entry called "postprocess effects". That entry is new since the last patch.

By default it is set to 0.

I changed it to 1 but did not notice any difference. Perhaps it will used in the next addon?

I probably don't have that option seeing as how I only run the offline (non-steam) version anyhow and since I get no updates I am stuck with what came with the Evo cd.

Would be nice to see if that option actually gets implemented in the future!!

By the way, did you try the compression settings change? Did it have any affect?

Yes it looks much better (as it should), but I'm very surprised that I did not loose any frames. Good deal

I had only very occasional stuttering in replays on the TV camera only. I was led to believe this was Vista related though. Can't say i noticed any difference in that regard but the visual's are sharper and crisper and the colours seem bolder too.

Well, last night I changed the setting back to "1" and to be honest I can't say I noticed more than ~10 fps difference (increase). Maybe it was just in my head or something but I could have sworn I was getting less frames before. It did look much better!!

As for the micro-stuttering I was seeing, that did improve oddly enough but I also found something else that could be a culprit for the really bad stuttering I was seeing in some corners. I run some pretty extreme cooling, in that I use a tec for my cpu and water for my gpu but that is all chilled with a recycled window AC unit. I think I may be experciencing a "cold" bug with my GPU. Everytime I get my card down to ~15C (lowest it has idled is 10C) I start to experience some major stuttering in games. I used to have this problem with my 7800gs agp card evertime I got below 32C, but this was a common bug and was easily verified online. Unfortunately, I can't find anything to verify that the same is true for my sapphire 4870 1gb.
