View Full Version : Use of hotlaps as ghost
28 September 07, 22:30
is it possible to use one downloaded hotlap as ghost???? As far as I know, the hotlap files available to download are in .vcr format, and the ghost laps save by the game are in .gtt format.
And where can I get good setups to the Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit???? I made some good lap times, but I don't enjoy the tunning process to much, and the chances I normally made on the cars are to increase the higher gears (because of the long straight) in setup one, and increase the front and rear ride height and packers a bit, to avoid the ground touch in level changes on the track.
Well, I will post my times and I hope you can help me to improve these.

The startup of the RACE07 hotlap section here at NoGrip had a few problems. And in the process, a couple of us tried to help debug what was happening. And I tried running the hotlap file as a ghost and vice versa. Changed the file type after copy/paste. They didn't work that way.
Since the mainline program code takes your fast lap and saves it as a hotlap, and then the time trial subset uses that to file the ghost lap when you request, it would seem that they are very similar. It would seem that it wouldn't take much programming to make a conversion routine. It would help if the programmer knew the code beforehand, however. Or at least had a copy of it. But ain't that always the case.

the Time Trial part of GTR2 has this in a way and I would think that with it being in the base of code that it would be at least in some way possible. However it may need some changes by the coding team of the game to reach those modules of code.
Sorry to say, but there are quite a lot of more data in GTT file headers. I also was (secretly) hoping for turning a good VCR file into an enjoyable GTT file, but after studying the files structures for some tool I made, I have now stopped hoping for that to happen (at least easily).
GTT -> VCR might be possible, but I don't see any major reason for that conversion.

A time trial file seems to contain about twice the data as a hotlap file. It appears that the descriptions of both the driver's lap and a ghost car's lap are included in detail. If you look at the size of a hotlap file and the size of a time trial lap it's obvious the timetrial file is slightly over twice as large. That is, if you only look at hotlaps created in single car test sessions.
So some hotlaps don't contain information for more than the driver's car. And the others wouldn't have data for a ghost car, only whatever cars happened to be on the track when the driver set his hotlap time.
So where would you get a description of the ghost car's lap? Simple. Use the driver's lap and simply make the created file with both cars running the same times. If that gives a problem, then alter one of the times a minute amount. Computers don't know the difference between 3 seconds and 0.000003 seconds if all they require is a difference.
What else is different between the two files? Got no idea. But it really would seem that the few other details shouldn't be too hard to cover.
