View Full Version : Annoying helmet view

[This comment is based upon the demo version – hope Simbin has done something about this]
Is it me or is the helmet one of the most annoying features Simbin could have included in this game?
I mean, if I want to see a helmet, I could wear one. Changing the glass after it gets dirty is nice but:
a. When I take a curb, I know I have the tendency of inclining my head in the same direction I’m going. This, obviously, tilt my view of the scenery – tilting the car’s interior and everything else. Now, the helmet doesn’t do anything. No gravity, no G-Force whatsoever. It remains there as it was glued to the car’s body. This is a non sense. With a world movement of 100% and G-Force simulation of 100%, I could have expected the head to move forward, backward, to the left and to the right… AND have the car bumping around AND have the world bumping. NOT!
b. More on this, helmet’s rendering is not really good. How could I have the helmet on focus AND have the road on focus? Take Battlefield 2 as an example (I think Call of Duty also has that feature): When you shoot, the gun’s gets blurred at first but the aim is on focus. Here? The helmet’s edges are not blurred. They remain perfectly in focus. Optically speaking, this is simply impossible.
So… Is there a way to get rid of that bloody helmet and keep the same view perspective as with it (which I love)? This annoys me enough to buy the game and never touch the Radical or F3000 or any other race car where I need to wear a helmet. More! I’m wondering now if I’m going to buy the game knowing that I’m going to use 1/3 of it.
Guys, tell me there’s an option somewhere.
PS. I get rid of the steering wheel.
PPS. I hope the option is not in my face and I just missed it! :(

In the Demo the "open wheel cars" aren t nice, because the helmet view is in my opinion sh.. !!!
Only drive wtcc is for me not enought argument to buy, although i live in Ger.
I cant find a possibility to delete the helmet by cockpitview, possible this is in the exe code ?
By 3 Monitoring left - centre and right with a size of ca. 3000 there are no the helmet view i read !!!!

No. It's not the same view angle and you can't adjust the seat.

I think the helmet is a great idea. Adds to the realism.
Its rare to just get people to sit their butts incar than too add a helmet to it. Shame really, developers spend so much effort to get this part of the sim right, just to have it run like a arcade machine in a arcade room. I sure the leagues or some will use this feature.

I agree the helmet should move with car, wobble some at times, move with brakes/acceleration applied!
PhilH959
4 October 07, 16:20
In the default settings of the demo ( all I have at the moment) the helmet does bobble all over the place, and gravity or inertia seems to tug at it. I had to turn off all that additional movement. Hit the Insert key twice to get to the cockpit view. You can cycle that key three times. First view is helmet, second view is nose cam, third should be cockpit!
I agree, that if I want a helmet view, I will wear one 'cause the one in the game is horrible. Last time I actually wore one, I dont remember seeing the piece in front of my mouth? Maybe just the very top of it?

This doesn't feel much different that the 06 version, and people were happy with that.
I take it that you drive WTCC cars in real life?

i must say i would like to see the helmet view removed too. It just doesn't look right at all
Imo it looks more like i glued a black paper with a cutout on my monitor or looking trough an empty helmet instead of wearing it somehow.
On a regular monitor the viewing angle is already small enough compared to real life (like driving with one eye closed, especially in the left/right hand drive cars) without having this limiting it even more.
Maybe if the lower part shape and the 'banner' was different it might look better.
kinda like this feature, as it was said before, adds to the realism.
when I race seriously I use hood view anyway. "inside" views are ok for driving around and stuff.

The file is called....
DRIVER_HELMET_FPVISOR.dds
inside GameData\Teams folder.
Deleting it will cause a CTD, but you can make the texture transparent so the helmet disappears.
I have attached a transparent DRIVER_HELMET_FPVISOR.dds for those who don't like the helmet view.

Thanks for the fix. The only way you'd get a view like that in real life is if the helmet was about twice as big as it should be. With a modern, properly fitting helmet about all you'd see is a little bit at the top and a little bit of the chin bar. (pulls helmet on) Yep, that's about it - not enough to impede your vision at all.
Be glad we all race these cars, If this was a NASCAR sim. Not only would you have to deal with a helmet view, but the hauns (spelling) device as well. Talking about restrictive.

That helmet removed has a nice side-effect to my Ati x800 xt.
No more black-screens which required a lower setting to the textures,
no more Alt+Tab needed.
Why would any sim - F1 or NASCAR simulate a HANS device? And by the way, people in all series are starting to wear HANS. I know guys who just track thier cars (not even racing) who wear it - it's not something you would in anyway put in a sim.
I'll add to unrealistic. I don't see the sides of my helmet when i'm wearing it, and the visor doesn't generally get dirty inside a closed cockpit car anyway (that's ok for the open wheel stuff) not to mention that alot of times, even when raciing.
Good marketing ploy though...

I like the basic idea, but think they went a bit far in how the helmet restricts your view, especially at the bottom. It would be nice to see an edited visor texture with less intrusion and a choice of replacements for the race website url on the sunshade band. It is surprising it wasn't made an option; after all Simbin have gone the extra mile in the tin-tops by allowing unrealistic seat movement as an option. Does the rainscreen work properly with the fully transparent visor?
SuperCouilles
6 October 07, 12:37
[...] after all Simbin have gone the extra mile in the tin-tops by allowing unrealistic seat movement as an option.
I use * and love * that option. I use a look to apex @ 50% and get really near the windshield up until I see 50% of outside mirror.
The thing that annoys me in the demo is that if you raise the seat enough, you go THROUGH the roof. I mean, you cannot go in front of the windshield but you can go through the roof. I cannot see how the testers could have missed this.
I also wonder how much a tester’s comment weight when expressing his opinion. I like to think that if I was a game tester, developers would go crazy:
Me: “Hey! You can run THROUGH the official that is waiving the flag on the 3rd curb in Brand Hatch!”
Dev: “So?” :o
Me: “Put the guy to the other side of the wall then, it will be more realistic.”
Dev answer 1: “Too hard to program.”
My answer would be: “Ok, so, if I go through a sign on the side of the road, it gets pushed off and flies further down the road, but if I run into an official, I simply go through him… He’s a phantom? Oh! I wasn’t seeing it like that… :p NOT! Man, just make him fall or jump to the other side of the wall scared or something…”
Or;
Dev answer 2: “We do not have time for that and it’s unimportant – only a small fraction of racers are going to notice and… Why are you driving there anyway? You’re not supposed to be there at anytime.”
My answer would be: “We’re doing a game for non-traditional gamers. You’re programming for people that are looking for something as realistic as it can be. If you start adding *small* unrealistic stuff like that, the end product WILL be unrealistic and you are going opposite way to the potential buyers.” :(
Or;
Dev answer 3: “Loosen up Super, it’s only a game. Kid won’t notice.”
Me: “What about the 30 years old that is playing the game? You know, the one that are actually PAYING for the game, not pirating them?” [And then, I’d probably go ballistic!]
Anyway, some weird stuff happening in the game. I feel they’ve cut the corner here and there. I would have liked them to drop the open wheels and concentrate the energy fixing stuff like that [AND ADDING THE DAMN BUTTON TO REMOVE THE VISOR] :roflmao:. I suppose then they’d lose the marketing hype of have 8 categories… Or I suppose the publisher would have given less time to produce since there would not be too many new features – Hey! It’s an upgrade after all. Just like Madden08 or NHL08.

I can tell from your post Super that you do not race sims seriously, 50% look to apex is awful and I bet most drivers run at 0%....
If you want to run people over then maybe Carmageddon is the game for you. Do you think that the dev team should spend time coding in driving into people? I can tell you if you deliberately ran someone over you would be banned for life, maybe that's what should happen to you ;)
I think maybe you are taking the sim thing a bit too far, maybe they should build something into the game whereby when you crash an ambulance turns up outside your house and you have to spend 6 weeks in hospital, then maybe a couple of months in rehabilitation until you are fit to drive again or they could just allow you to press the Escape key OMG how unrealistic.
I agree that you should be able to remove the visor within the game but a 1 second search on here and it's done. I know it's not realistic but if you have TrackIR it works well when showing a friend....
As for 30 years old, you should know better and post more constructive comments....

Or would you want to say, that if you drive a hairpin left, you're looking into the valley? Doesn't seem smart to me, you'd better watch the road.

Hey I am not critising if you want to run look to apex then run it. Yes I agree in real life you would look in that direction but this is not real life. The look to apex whilst looking nice is actually a distraction, especially if you opposite lock, it just looks where you are turning and that is not always which way you will actually be going.
But as you say it is a matter of choice but IMO you will find much better lap times to be had (or maybe more consistent times) with a fixed view, even if it is a bit unrealistic. I think it is set to '0' as default in Race 07. ;)

I agree in the essence. And, you know what? I may also get better lap time if I'm not driving using the cockpit view but use the "hood cam" or, God forbid, the 3rd person's view. I could also get better time by not maxing the world movement, G-Force simulation, or anything else that could distract me from the road. :D
I’ll gain speed but lose on the sheer fun the game is providing me.
What I really need is a 16/9 or a 3 screens setup. I’d put a look to apex of 10% on the 1st one and use none on the second option.
It'll come soon. ;)

I can't drive without it, looking ahead into corners is incredibly useful and I hate the left-right looking though buttons as it's too digital.
Maybe it's just some tweaking of the settings like sensitivity/deadzones that needs to be done? I can give you mine too see if that improves things for you. Just PM me so that we don't take this thread off-topic too much :) The right settings and a bit of practice should make it work! :)

any help?
you have to make the directories.
go to C:\Games\Steam\SteamApps\(your username)\race 07
make a GameData directory
go inside it and make a Teams directory
open that up and dump the DDS file there
It's the same path structure as the .gcf files in the main SteamApps folder, so I assume it just over-rides the default one in the "race 07 textures.gcf" game cache file.
Shame the guy that made the really good looking one never uploaded it, and when i pull the file out of the gcf with gcfScape it cant be opened by the nvidia photoshop plug-in or dds converter 2... else i'd just make my own minimalist texture.
