View Full Version : Ghost in hotlap?

OK, I don't understand something.
I just downloaded a hot lap file to see how the driver did such a good time. It states in the FAQ that we provide a proof lap when we file the hotlap time. And that we use the replay .vcr file for that lap and it is uploaded when we file the hotlap.
I just watched Solcius's Curitiba07 hotlap (1:23.056) and there was a ghost car in the replay. The replay was definitely a .vcr file and worked in my REPLAY theater.
So how did a ghost car get into a hotlap?

Don't work now because the file he has uploaded isn't a "time attack file" (.ta) but a "replay file" (.vcr). If you want to play versus a ghost of anyone you have to get his "example.ta" file and place it in your time attack folder (in the folder corresponding to the track, of course).
Now, the problem is : it's forbidden to upload a ".ta" file. You have to upload a ".vcr" to prove your time.

Well, in GTR2, It works this way: You test against your own best ghost in the time trial (time attack) mode. If you beat the ghost and have auto save on for hot lap, it will save the new hotlap in vcr mode with the ghost.
(If you want to save your new hotlap in time trial mode in GTR2 you have to hit save in time trial and name the new file.) IF you also have auto save on, it will save the hotlap (with ghost) in vcr mode ALSO.
Anyway thats how GTR2 works. Thats why my uploaded hotlaps in GTR2 on Nogrip usually have a ghost showing. Haven't played RAce07 enough yet to know if it is essentially the same.
Reading the RAce 07 manual that came with the disk makes me think that it is similar.
Ghostlapping is a REAL good way to check moment to moment how you are doing compared to your last best attempt. (change of line, suspension, etc). Its instant gratification MOTEC for dummies like me.
For example, you can check the Viper lap that I just uploaded on Daytona Oval GTR2 timetial that includes the ghost of my previous best. As you can see my latest time beats my ghost by most of a car length (for a 0.013 advantage). Only change was a very small right side camber change.
Daytona Oval has many fewer variables than a road course so its easier to check minor changes for effect. (Dont laugh -too much- at Daytona Oval because it still has bumps in the turns that make you work on ride height, springs, etc.)

Gutshot, that answers it. Those hotlaps must have been done in TIMEATTACK and had the ghost captured when the hotlap was automatically saved.
Thanks for the info.
I never noticed the auto save option in GTR2 and haven't seen it in RACE07. Will have to look.
