View Full Version : Mods overview thread
Please post here only links to mods or attached mod files, including a short description what it does and installation instructions. When we get a downloads section, this will allow easy porting of the mods to there.
Example:
Reduced bling-bling mod V3
http://forum.racedepartment.com/downloads/need-for-speed-shift/68/reduced-bling-around-track-v3-1713/
This removes a lot of the banners, circus attractions etc. from most tracks.
Readme:
This MOD reduce adboards, graffities, tents, flags, and some metal constructions beside the track. Helicopter, Planes, Balloons and moving circusparts are completely removed from the racetrack.
All real racetracks in Shift are patched, the fictional tracks lacking only some generic things (planes, some ads, etc).
////Installation
!Warning!
To use this mod, you have to completely unpack the hole game, this is timeconsuming (about 30 minutes) and should only be done with a full game backup!
I've wrote a small batch file (game_unpack.bat), which does the unpacking job for you and moves the pakfile folder to a backuplocation. Place the files in the "Reduced_Bling_MOD_with_UnpackerScript+EXE" zip in the root folder of the game where your "shift.exe" is located. If you installed the game on your systemdrive you may need to run the batch file with administrator rights. After successfully unpacking, use the "backup_reduced_bling_original_files.bat" to backup all files the mod will overwriter with its installation. Install the mod with the "install_reduce_bling_modfiles.bat" script.
Last step, create a shortcut to your "shift.exe" and edit its properties, add the "-loose" parameter to the patch of the executable.
You can always remove the mod by using the "restore_original_files.bat" script.
///
Why unpacking the hole game? Some clever guys find the "-loose" parameter, to circumvent some problems with the repacker-tool. It is not possible to repack the *.bff archives of the tracks. The programmer of the repacker, will not further investigate a way to repack all files since you can run and mod the game with in a unpacked status.
http://forum.xentax.com/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=3717
You cannot use mods which are delivered as .bff archives any further.
I will reupload the small tweaks which I done so far, to run it with a unpacked game. This is an easier way for all guys who are interested in a modification of the game. You can simply edit the game parameters by yourself without unpacking/repacking for each try, or copy future modfiles in your game.
V2 adds backup, install and reverts scripts to this mod.
Updated to V3, without the error in the installation batch file.

'Shift No Bloom' mod
Made this mod for those that want bloom off but HDR enabled (High Dynamic Range lighting).
This mod removes bloom but keeps HDR enabled. Bloom is the effect that creates a "hazy aura"/dreamstyle silhouette around objects. By disabling bloom effect such thing as color contrast gets more defined aswell as contrast between objects and overall image sharpness regarding detail. This makes it look more realistic.

Redi, would you agree with me if I said it would be a very good idea to create a "community patch" for Shift together with these various modders?
ONE patch that bundles the best and most useful of these mods together so anyone installing NFS can get them up to speed as quick as possible without having to search which mods are an improvement to the game or which are just an alteration.
(I'm not enforcing this on you specifically, it's just that you seem to take lead over this section. :))

Sounds fair, expecially since some mods undo each other because they are alterations of the same file :)
We'd have to vote for what would should go in and what not, and then ask someone to make it in both compressed and uncompressed form. I'll set it into motion, thanks

packed vs-Shift Wipe Out MOD 1-1c (http://www.nogripracing.com/details.php?filenr=22964)
unpacked vs-Shift Wipe Out MOD 1-1c (http://www.nogripracing.com/details.php?filenr=22963)
Description:
This mod was made to improve performance in need for Speed Shift when running in ATI´s cards, Nvidia´s and processors less powerfull!
Other intent is to give shift a more cleaner and lighter look, turning the visual fron "a festival day" to a normal "trainning racing day"
Most tracks were lightly modded, i removed just a few scenery objects, ads, advertising and propaganda
but a few ones, needed a extreme makeover, like Dakota, Tokyo and laguna Seca, to achieve a better FPS rating and CPU flow!, evem doing this Dakota still lag a little, less than before of course!
But the real objective was to get rid of that mechanics, in starting grid, now just the Grid-Girls stays with you in the start of the race, and remove many animations that was CPU consuming!
IMPORTANT:
This mod is only for "-loose", (uncompressed) version of SHIFT, you´ll need the shortcut with the parameter "-loose" and the game fully uncompressed to install this mod!
Use at your own risk
All the instructions is inside the pack, in the read-me file.
You can do whatever you want with this files, but if you´ll share and/or publish in other places, please just mencion my credits OK!
And let me know what you thought about this!
thank you and enjoy!
UPDATE 1.1:
If you installed the 0.1 version, i recommend a full clean install and unpack of Need for speed Shift game, or replace the original backUp folders that this mod changes, since in this update i optmized the same files, but removed a few files from the previous version OK
UPDATE 1.1a(1.2):
Nothing new, just re-arranged some files ok
UPDATE 1.1b(1.3)
I accidentally duplicated some files in the previous version, it´s working, but there was a little mess into some folders, now, everything is clear and in the right place!
I recommend a fresh new unpacked Shift installation, and then add the mod´s files, or you´ll end up with many duplicated files in your Shift installation!
Really sorry for this!
UPDATE 1.1c(1.4)
Fixed some issues in London Tracks
"NO more barbecue", removed and disabbled all the barbecue smoke animations in camping areas in some tracks!

Shift Community Stickers MOD (http://www.nogripracing.com/details.php?filenr=23094)
Description:
This MOD adds new stickers, to the section "Community", of vinyls tunning car´s garage!
Now the stickers are bigger, more detailed, colorfull and more Scalable!
In this very first version i added some brands, like ;AMD, Intel, ATI, Nvidia, 2 communities that i belong here in Brazil: Adrenaline and Manicômio-share, and 5 new designs for original community stickers that i like and decided to keep!
In further versions maybe i change one or another, as i see if people like they or not OK!
This MOD is only for unpacked version!

How do I know for sure that I installed the 'Better Graphics Mod' properly?
I did what you said, Basically drag and drop the folders into my instalation folder. Now When you said this is based on the 'Loose' method,
--------------------------------------Installation-------------------------------------------
(-loose method installation required) Just drag and drop each folder into your Shift game folder. Dont forget to backup your data before installing mod.
Do You mean I have to edit the short cut? Do I need to add the word 'Loose' to the shortcut properties?
Sorry if this seems like a noobish question, But I am still new to the P.C. Modding scene. I have been a gamer for over 20 years but only in the last two years did I make the jump to P.C. Gaming. And man I am so happy I did. Being able to increase the graphics on a game is priceless "If you have the rig to power it" And i have a XEON 3070 OC'd to 3.4Ghz and a EVGA GTX 260 OC'd aswell with Four GB ram. So I know my rig aint a monster, But it aint a slouch either. So I really want to see what this game looks like with the better graphics mod!!
But when I did drag and drop the folders, Only one folder asked me if I wanted to rewrite the folders inside my game directory. Is that normal
Thanx for any and all help.
Great job on the mods people, Keep em comin. I have the 'Realmod v2.0b' installed and I am lovin it. Just need the better graphics to go with it!!

can someone answer me about how to tell if yoru mod is running or not? I tried to add the word "Loose" to the shortcut target like it says todo in alot of other mods,
But it wouldn't let me save it. So I had to remove the word 'loose'. So how do I tell if it is enabled 100%!!!!!!

it won't let me alter target?
So you cannot edit the target path as shown in the attached picture (here it's called "Doel")?
My guess is then that you don't have Administrator rights in the account you'r using for Shift...

And I am unsure what you guys mean by having a unpacked version. Can someone explain what that means to me a 'Laymen'?

The picture is too small, I can't see anything in it :)
As for the unpacked game, Shift by default comes with all files packed in files similar to .zip or .rar files. That way, you cannot modify anything in the game. In order to get access to all the files, you'll have to unpack all those files. How to do that is described here (http://www.nogripracing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=166542).
Until you have unpacked the game, adding "-loose" to the Target Path makes no sense.
Still, you should find out why Windows seems to not let you alter the Target line. First, post a bigger screenshot, second please tell us if you have administrator rights on your PC.

Yes I am the owner of P.C. First of all. Sorry the picture was so small? Since I have all my files for need for speed shift in one folder under F/Program files/Shift, And all the files there are unpacked. There is no Zip or Rar files in there at all. So that makes it unpacked right?
And I now got the loose Param to stick, I forgot to put a space after the quotations!!
Now just drag and drop those five folders from the downloaded mod into my Game install folder right, And overwrite if asked?!

Okay, good that you got the -loose parameter issue solved.
As for the packed/unpacked thing, there are no .zip or .rar files inside the Shift folder structure, that was just an example. Shift's pakced files have the extension .bff and they are inside the Packfiles folder.
If you didn't go through the unpacking procedure in the thread that I referred to in my previous posting, then your game is not unpacked. That means that you cannot use any mod that requires the unpacked game (which is usually mentioned in the mod description).

So now I am not sure what is happening. I downloaded the three files I needed to unpack the game which I did. Then i dragged and dropped the five folders into my install folder and it asked to overwrite which i said yes to. Here is a screen shot of the five folders I got from the three I downloaded? I thought there was only supposed to be three?
[img=http://img39.imageshack.us/img39/6334/newefe.th.png] (http://img39.imageshack.us/i/newefe.png/)

When I try to start it, it stays at a black screen, no sounds or anything. What is going on with that ? I tried restarting my Computer, I am out of ideas to try to get this game running again. I really want to see this game with these mods running?
Hope you have a suggestion for me?
Thanx again for all your help:)

- Did you add -loose to your Shift shortcut?

And I also changed the target to what you said too?
Do you see anything that should not be there? I asked the question earlier about the three att that I downloaded to be able to unpack the game. When i unrared/unzipped them I ended up with five files/folders that I moved to my Game directory. Is there supposed to five in all?

So I fixed it and everything is working great. I installed the mod too and its running very nice, A little slower FPS wise but better looking by far. Thanx for all the help guys.

This mod will change the sun locations on each real tracks, to be more believable, trying to present more accurate locations for the sun in dawn, midday, and dusk.
Drift events and fictional tracks are not enchanted, only full length real tracks.
Bloom is not entirely removed, for athmospheric reasons.....i may see things, and should be locked on a closet, but somehow i feel that a small fraction of bloom effect looks better than no bloom at all.
"The Mother" has got some special treatment too...you'll see when you are in there.
Includes both packed and unpacked versions.
Hope you enjoy.

I have made an update for FXMOD to include some improvements and new dusk groundcolor scheme from patch v1.02.
------------Update package for FXMOD------------
This updates weather files that controll track lighting.
FIX 1: Changes are pushed back fog distance to improve visuals at distance. Objects past the fog line doesn't get lit up by lighting therefore create contrast with fore-scene. This is especially noticable with trees that has their contours marked and making them stand out in a bad way.
FIX 2: As of patch v1.02 dusk time has recieved new groundcolor by developers. This has been added as this new color scheme for ground is better than in previous versions.
-----------------Installation--------------------
Just drop the "track" folder into your game folder. When asked to replace answer yes

Hi Yodastar, how does your updated FXMOD differ from your old Lighting Intensity mod (http://www.nogripracing.com/details.php?filenr=22839)?
FXMOD contains improved LOD for cars, improved shader parameters (most of it by BeetleWar1977). Such thing as better shadow filtering, SSAO with higher precision/quality, better sky illumination, higher rendertarget res for depth of field etc. Also included "Lighting Intensity mod".
The update for FXMOD is really just the weather files updated. So if you use the 'Lighting Intensity mod' then you can apply the update to improve visuals.

Thanks for your reply Yodastar.
Just to clarify:
- The FXMOD increases image quality at the cost of fps?
- Your update in post #37 is not the entire mod, just an update for the weather files, and will not have as big a cost of fps?

NFS Shadermodv5.7 now. From memory, i think FXMOD used shadermodV4? He's tweaked more stuff, and added 0-255 HDR rendering (from 16-255).
Warning, shadermodv5.7 does conflict w/ the FOV mods, they change the same files. I had to roll my own... FOV is only a couple lines, shadermod makes a bunch of changes. Combining them isn't too hard if you can get a diff on the files.
I did the comparisons using, of all things, Google Docs! I'm sure you can google up some better instructions, but basically:
Create a new doc, paste in your first file.
Save
Now select all, and paste the new file over top.
Save
Go to version control, select the two, and hit compare.
Voila, it tells you what changed.
There's more elegant solutions, but I did that from work w/out installing any extra software.

Thanks for your reply Yodastar.
Just to clarify:
- The FXMOD increases image quality at the cost of fps?
- Your update in post #37 is not the entire mod, just an update for the weather files, and will not have as big a cost of fps?
Yes FXMOD comes with increased image quality but with a perfomacne degrade.
The update is basically just the "lighting intensity mod" with tweaks and has no perfomance impact. The "lighting intensity mod"is also included in FXMOD.

Thanks for the link!
About comparing files I recommend freeware program WinMerge as a free solution. It is robust and works well in WinXP, Vista x32/x64.
http://winmerge.org/
For a payware solution (the one I prefer and use) I recommend BeyondCompare v2/3. This program is ace and can compare multiple files in folder structures. When you have 1000's of files it is easy to find the ones that differ with highlighted differences.

For a great free program to search for keywords inside files or multi file data text replacement I recommend WinGrep.

Or payware solution AKS Textreplacer.

Got 3 mods to release but later as it is late now.
Mod 1) A simple single tree replacement mod to change a tree type for another similar but with more uniform look. Game uses instacing for trees (copies for perfomance increase) aswell as unique trees mixed for tracks. In Silverstone track the instacing pattern can be seen on a certain tree type which has a rather annoying top form that breaks the 'unique vegetation look' pattern. This mod fix that (and it applies for other tracks to).
Mod 2) A mod that makes camera views outside cockpit use the highest detail steering wheel. When viewing car from outside due to perfomance reason the cockpit internal is changed for a low detail one. However in replays and close view angles the low detail steering wheel stands out with its hard edges due to low polygon amount and texture/shading detail. This mod makes the steering wheel have same detail as in cockpit in any view mode.
Mod 3) This mod makes rims/wheels be high detail when driving and in replay mode. As is by default the car rims/wheels get changed from highes detail (LODA) to medium detail (LODB) whenever car moves at faster than ~15kmh. In replay this is plain obvious when replay camera is near rims/wheel and they look low detail geometrically. This mod makes the LODA (highest detail) rims used for car at any speed and in replays resulting in a lot better looking and much smoother rims/wheels polygon edges.

I've released my first mod for Shift. Here's a copy and pasted description from the download page (http://www.nogripracing.com/details.php?filenr=24878):
"This small mod fully removes the driver body from the cockpit view. However the complete driver body is still visible from any view outside the car.
One of the main benefits of this mod is that it allows you to increase the rotation of the animated wheel (default of 115 degrees) to match that of your real wheel (eg, 900 degrees on a G25) without causing a movement mismatch between the animated wheel and animated arms.
A mod to achieve a similar effect has been posted previously here at NoGrip by beep. However, it was not effective with all cars (eg, Lotus Exige), caused crashes to desktop with some other cars (eg, Porsche GT3 RS), and also resulted in the driver arms/chest also being invisible from views outside the car."
I've already mentioned it in a smaller thread, but thought it might potentially reach (and benefit) more people if I also posted it here.
Cheers,
Matt
