View Full Version : Would a track conversion tool be possible to make.?
3 November 07, 12:03
I was just wondering if it would be possible to make a fairly simple
but fully working track conversion tool, to convert the GTR2 & GTL
tracks to Race07 - for personal home use only of course.??
Just imagine how cool Race07 would be with a huge addon track
collection / primarely meant for offline use..:D
The question is just would a move like this ruin the officially released
manually converted track conversions, or would handmade conversions
always have the edge over - quick fix methods like this.??
Another thing is not many track conversion are being released atm,
for reasons unknown..? / Maybe loads are to be released soon,
leaving an idea like this useless for most.?
I know all the tech guys most likely already have converted loads of
tracks for own personal use / however to guys of less tech skills
personal home conversions is only possible via an idea like this.

I think if you wait a couple of weeks they will all be done anyway so there will be no need for tool :D There are already 25 addon tracks available in the downloads section...

Yes, I have a sneaky feeling interesting conversions are on the way as well.
I of course already have the 25 great tracks that are converted atm..:D
Will be very interesting to see how the addon track scene for Race07
develops along the way..;)
Would be cool if (even) more converters would support Race07,
since the GTR2, GTL & RF platforms has loads of (track) goodies
that could use - officially approved conversions to Race07..:D

It is pretty interesting to look at how fast tracks were converted in GTR2 compared to RACE07.
The first tracks to GTR2 were uploaded in Sep/Oct of last year.
The first tracks to RACE07 were uploaded in Oct this year.
Right now there are more done for RACE07 than were done for GTR2 after one months time.
Considering how good the physics feel in RACE07, I got a feeling it'll wind up with more tracks. Hope so.
The main holdup is getting permissions for release. The conversion from GTL or GTR2 to Race07 is a very quick and simple proccess. Usually have a track in game and working in about 15 minutes unless unforseen problems come up. I would love to be able to release every street course from GTR2 over to race. I think the street courses suite Race07 very well with the WTCC cars. I may start sending out release request emails. But of course for each track, it usually requires a permission from the GTR2 converter, the rFactor converter and than the guy who originally converted it to what ever sim before rFactor plus if it is a scratch made track you have to ask that guy also. Sometimes the chain of convertes gets a little confusing.
But thats the main holdup since you asked :D

Yeah it's exactly like N2LO says, I have quite a couple of tracks ready to release but waiting for original authors permission.
Regarding the OP, problem with an automatic tool is that RACE07 can't use .gtr archives, which basically means that whoever writes that tool needs to know how a .gtr archive is unpacked.

Yes, It's the permissions that needs to be done something about..
If the permissions system was carried out in the open, like a permissions
section - where tracks & car mods could be pre-approved & then picked
up by a modder afterwards, then the permissions system would work
much more effective & less painfull for all involved as well.
The trick would be to spead the word of such a section to the actual guys
that did the orginal mods / tracks in the first place, so only the "no-way"
permissions didn't make it for approval. / Top organizing is the key word..
1..There are loads of tracks & car mods that ( in realistic theory ) could be
converted form various platforms to other various platforms.:
GTR1 to : GTR2, GTL, Rfactor, Race07.
GPL to : GTR2, GTL, Rfactor, Race07.
F1 99-02 to : GTR2, GTL, Rfactor, Race07.
N2003 to : GTR2, GTL, Rfactor, Race07.
GTR2 to : GTL, Rfactor, Race07
Rfactor to : GTR2, GTL, Race07
etc, etc, ...
2..There seem to be a good amount of modders / converters willing & able.
3..More than plenty interest in downloading the outcome.
So the trick is just to organize the permission approvals to the maximum..
After that maybe a look into the educational system of modding/converting
to make sure that enough manpower were avalible to do all the nice conversions.
Maybe throw a few relevant competitions along the way, like..:
Who can convert the most tracks for Race07 in one month - wins..
(Including a quality rule-set to be sure of only good stuff could be entered ).
Just some creative thoughts of course, but considering the fact that not
many new racing sim games are being released anymore - a structured
move like this might be needed to help keep the scene alive long term basis.
I think a cool site like No-Grip that to some extend rely on organized
modding / converting - would benifit of such a process..;)
Take Care Guys,

i think....create a third party tool.that would enable the track makers to by pass the rfactor
path....so make the track...convert to race 07 format...a tool then to create an ai line plus
track cams........would be off great use.....
