Hi all,
I'm playing Need For Speed Shift. I'm not much of simulation fan so this is my first entry here. I have a very simple question.

In options there is 'HUD' settings. I'm wondering what's the difference between the 'Full HUD' and 'Mirror off' option. I tried changing but looks like no difference at all.

I have the PC version and I installed the patch as well.

And why some cars have right side driver? (Ex : Nissan skyline) But some Japanese cars have left side driver.

For all the people who is doing mods I have a request. I watched you guys are doing great works for Simbin's simulations. I really wanted to drive the cars in new tracks. So can't you guys create new tracks for Need for speed Shift???

Hoping to hear a reply soon ...:-)

I think the Mirror Off is for non-cockpit views (toggles the virtual mirror)?

Left-hand and right-hand side drivers is just how those cars are/were produced I guess.

Making new tracks for Shift may take a while, because the game's track format needs to be unraveled first. Importing tracks from other games may also require a lot of extra work because of the new graphics engine that Shift uses, so we just need to have patience :)

You can cycle them in-race anyway. Check your controller options for your default key.

Thanks for the reply buddies ...

@redi
You might be right. I checked the changes while in cockpit mode. I think that's why I didn't realize something changed.
I hope you guys will find out a way very soon to use additional tracks. Seriously I played most racing games but all are arcade type like NFS series, burnout paradise, fuel etc ... So I never had the chance to try new tracks. All I wanted to was winning while I played those.
Now I like to turn myself into some serious simulation. But I guess I need a wheel to feel the real driving. I tried GTR evolution this week but I found very hard to move the car at least to the next corner :-( I know it's because of my arcade racing type. So you think I can be a good driver if I bought a wheel instead of keyboard?

@Anach
Ya, we can cycle the views. I saw a option for that. But never tried so :-)

.... So you think I can be a good driver if I bought a wheel instead of keyboard?

That depends on your expectations, your talent and the amount of time you're willing to spend :)

Driving a race sim requires you to treat the virtual car like a real car, hence you'll have to
- learn to use throttle and brake with care
- learn to turn the wheel fluently, not yanking it from side to side
- get an idea of how a (race) car behaves (e.g. how the grip of the tyres depends on speed, steering angle, what part of the track you're driving and the temperature of the tyres, and how mass transfer of the car influences its behaviour)
- get an idea of the race line, brake points, turn-in points and corner apex
- learn about racing etiquette

True (sim) racing is a skill that you'll need to master, and that takes time and patience but it is a lot of fun if you're willing to.

Going for a quick blast around a track without having learned the above will result in a lot of malfunctioning car parts after the first corner, so that won't work.

If you're into car racing a bit and like to master the skill, a steering wheel is a must. However, you won't be driving better automatically, you'll need to learn.

I seriously advise you to buy a proper wheel (Logitech or Fanatec) to take full advantage of what Sims can give you; besides after mastering it, its easier than playing with a keyboard :)

All of the game's cars are left-hand-drive as most of the markets the game is being sold to use LHD. However, cars like the Skyline GT-R were never built in LHD form, so they remain RHD for realism. The 350Z for example was built with the wheel on the right for Japan, Australia and the UK, but also with the wheel on the left for Europe and North America, so the game can use the real-life LHD version.

If you want to try the sim-oriented games, you should get a wheel and pedal set. Most of these have assists, which make them fairly simple to drive. Generally I learn a new car and track combination with the assists on, then turn them off once I get an idea of what to expect. Some sims are easier to drive than others. With all assists off, GTR Evolution is probably the easiest of the GTR series to drive. GTLegends or GTR2 are more difficult. I wouldn't recommend the original GTR. rFactor depends on the car. The most difficult sim-oriented game is proably Grand Prix Legends. The assists in GPL are useless, and your driving cars that weigh about 1400lbs with 400 hp, no downforce. You can get GPL 2004 demo which includes all cars and one track, (do a web search for gpl 2004 demo). Nascar Racing Season 2003 is a good game, but too expensive at Ebay, and I'm not sure where to find the mods like the Trans Am mod and the road course add-ons.

Thanks for the update guys ....

I'm a being a racing fan now more than 4 years. But unfortunately I focused on the arcade type games.

Now I'm gonna try real simulations :)

might i suggest a Logitech Momo - the lower cost will get you into simracing and they are easily available on Ebay and such, if you decide you do enjoy "simming", then you can start to upgrade to some more serious hardware ( and more $$ investment )

good luck and welcome the the real* world

OK, Its looks like time to get to know about the real racing ... Even in my real life I drove car rarely because I don't own one. (I do own a motorbike ;-) )

I'm going to start with the SHIFT first as I played this series for long time. But ofcourse I'm not going to drive like previous titles. Then I'm going to move to GTR Evolution because "jeffareid" says it's the easiest simulation  ...

So can anyone give me some ideas about those zones in the SHIFT??? I meant the settings. And suggest the appropriate settings for the PC using keyboard. I didn't buy the wheels yet because in SriLankan market right now only "Genius" available. I'm looking for a Logitech G25. (Thanks to "f0xx" and "RMi Release Group" for suggestions) Buying at ebay cost me lot of shipping charges:crying:

And "pez2k" in SriLanka cars have right side drivers ... :-)

Lol ah that sucks :S you could try the one RMi said...Logitech MOMO. I have the Logitech Red MOMO, I believe its the first one it was released and it just feels great...you can buy Logitech MOMO's for a very low price...maybe cheaper than the shippings itself through Amazon..

What about the game-play specially driving settings I should use?

I found it little difficult to win the races. I'm just in driver level 14 ...:?:

Settings in the sense I meant brake zones etc and sensitivity settings ...

Is anyone using that wheel? Give me some ideas ... You think it's good? I heard it's brakes soon ...

Please let me know will it we worth to buy. :?:It costs me about Rs.6500 (65$ approximately).

There is another problem. This wheel is not in the official supported wheels

Is that in India?

http://tech2.in.com/india/news/ps3/logitech-driving-force-gt-racing-wheel-now-in-india/55901/0

A lot more expensive though....

Ideally you want something with force feedback (and not just vibration) but, that said, a wheel is, generally speaking, better to control a driving game than a keyboard even without FFB.

No, It's not India. I'm in Sri Lanka.

According that even if Logitech available here it's going to cost me around 30000 which I definitely cannot afford:thumbdown:

I don't know the genius wheel but my guess is that a general custom wheel profile will let you use the wheel with the game. As for the durability of the wheel, I wouldn't expect too much from it but it could be pretty decent as well.

Is it really the only brand that sells PC wheels in Sri Lanka?

kannan4NFS

I hope you are right "redi". Custom wheel settings might allow me to play using this wheel. I'm going to buy that and try. If I can use it for one year I'm OK with it. :-P

Yup,It's the only available brand in the market. And it has only two models which I mentioned above. I'm living at Colombo so it's obvious if I can't buy one here then it will no available in any other place within Sri Lanka.

Of course Ebay will offer more choice but I can imagine what the shipping costs to Sri Lanka will be :scared: If they ship to Sri Lanka at all that is... :glare:

If you can't afford a wheel yet, and you have experience playing console sim racing games like Forza and gran turismo, an xbox 360 or a PS3 controller is satisfying enough if you enable autoclutch. Almost anything will be better than a keyboard for racing games like these.

Yup, you are correct. Driving using the keyboard is nightmare. I didn't realize this for 5 years until I get to play a simulation type game.

Anyway, I'll be driving using a wheel within this month :-) . So let's see how it will feel.

Thanks for the info buddy

Finally for the time I have been waiting I found a great choice in the SriLankan market. (It's great in the SriLankan market so don't argue about that ;-))

http://www.geniusnet.com/geniusOnline/online.portal?_nfpb=true&productPortlet_actionOverride=%2Fportlets%2Fproduc tArea%2Fcategory%2FqueryPro&_windowLabel=productPortlet&productPortletproductId=63832&_pageLabel=productPage&test=portlet-action

It's again from Genius like I said before it' the only known brand available here. And it's a force feedback wheel.

The only think bothering me is the 'auto centering function'. What is that? :?:I don't want my wheel put my car in the center of the road. It's my job to keep it at the road right? Any guys have any idea about that? Or anyone using that wheel? Give some ideas guys.

It's a affordable price to me (Nearly Rs.6000:thumbup:) so I'm hoping to buy this on this Saturday. So still I have 4 days left. That's why I'm asking for opinions. But anyhow as I don't have much of choice still I'll be buying that. And better to know what I'm getting right?

http://www.souq.com/item.php?id=4139712

And I have this item as well. Price is similar range but never heard that brand name. I couldn't atleast find a home page for this product. But seems it has a separate gear module.

Anyone ever had this? Any ideas?

That item is not saying is compatible with PC but one I found in our market is.

I'd like to know why SMS thought it was better to have a Nissan 240sx instead of a 180sx. I mean one had a 1.8liter turbocharged engine, and the other a light truck engine. I'm glad it's in the game because I've owned one, but why the US market version when it has plenty of foreign cars?

Most wheels have this function, also known as 'centre spring'. All it means is that the wheel will automatically centre itself when you take your hands off of it. You can usually set how hard the 'spring' is as well as disable it completely. Its main use is for when a game doesn't have any FFB at all.

Thanks for the info Goffik.:-) I didn't know that. I know even real cars have that future.

Then I guess I'm going to buy that.
