Hi all.

I recently started to use 3DsimEd to try to edit cars and tracks of nfss and grid. Everything works fine but have one big problem. When exporting car to 3ds its loosing its smoothing so its all verry edgy, And i cant apply smoothing groups to it. Its like its frozen or something.

Help needed.

3dsimed doesn't handle 3ds files very well if they are single objects. You can try to export to .mts format then import that to zmodeler1(free) and export to 3ds from there.

Do the same thing in reverse to import back into 3dsimed.

Some time ago I discovered that 3ds MAX (R8) has a problem with smoothing groups when exporting models in .3ds format. It's strange, because it's looks good, but if you look closer you will find that something isn't good with smoothing (I had this issue with Ascari).
I found that the much better way to export models from max is to use directX (.x) format, or use collada (.dae) format and then convert it to directX format. The 3dSimEd can handle models in direcX (.x) format :)...and you've nice and proper smoothing groups, just like in 3ds max :)

Thanx everyone. I found a way to get it out verry nice.

*Unpacked content from NFSS
*Import content in Zmodeler
*Export to max = realy nice quality.

Only thing that disturbes me is the handeling of materials and textures in zmodeler = crap if u ask me. I would just like it to find the right exported tex and slap it on, Like 3DsimEd does.

Next is to try to get everything back the other way. I working as a visulisation artist/modeler, and im a big carfan. So i realy want to try in the future to add cars and remodel the kits for them or somethings. So feel free to help out to show me in right directions for adding stuff in the game.

Why not just fix an fbx export from 3DsimED? that would solve some problems i think, or obj.

For export back into 3dsimed, you can also use directX format with PandaX free plugin for export form Max.Edit: well 2dope was quicker :)

Some nice pictures using your technique (x file) with a custom NURBS front bumper Murcielago modeled by myself :
