:-(Hi, to everyone. I'm a beginner in the simulation world and i have a lot of question that i need an answer. First, i recently bought Race 07 and i installed via Steam and everything is running perfect. I want to run the game in a LAN with four computers. I don't have any idea what i need to setup this. Do i have to install Race 07 on each computer? What is the Race 07 Dedicated Server? I'm very frustrating because in the game there is no information about how to multiplayer work in a LAN. I want to have a good time playing with my three sons but i don't know what to do. So, please anybody that would like to help me will appreciate.
thanks
regards

I know each computer will have to have the game installed. You will have to buy 3 more copies of the game. Try doing a forum search for dedicated server for race07 or lan for race07. I'm sure this has been discussed here before. Good luck!!

For 4 PC's in LAN, you would not need a Dedicated server. The dedicated server would provide better performance for 8 or more PC's in a LAN. If you were intending on hosting an Internet server, the dedicated will provide better performance all around. The concept of dedicated server, is to have a PC running only the dedicated server, not a client and the dedicated server. Example, 4 PC at home in a LAN, the best optioned PC to run the dedicated server would be the one with the fastest CPU, preferrably a Windows Server Operating System, and goo-gobs of ram.

In Race 07, you have options in MP to host, and play either in LAN or INTERNET. If you select to 'HOST' on either option you will then be hosting a 'LISTEN SERVER' which is not as efficient as a dedicated server. From the Steam-Tools menu, if you select the Race 07 dedicated server, it loads up a completely different application, that is the dedicated server. The reason there is little to no documentation, because of the assumption of common knowledge.

Am positive, a wikipedia search or google search for dedicated server (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dedicated_server) or client-server networking (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Client-server) would provide a ton of information, all by itself.

In your case, 4 PC's, would not see a performance hit, if the fastest CPU/Memory PC hosts a 'LISTEN SERVER' and the other 3 clients connect to it. The machine hosting the 'LISTEN SERVER' would need the fastest CPU, and the most memory, so it can run the game, and LISTEN SERVER optimally for the other 3 PC's.

Each PC will need a unique Race 07, ie if you have Race 07, you will need to buy 3 more copies and install each with a unique steam account for each.

Enjoy

I'm not so sure about that. You would if you want to play online but in your own LAN you could get away with the same Steam account on all four PC's and set Steam to play "offline". The other PC's will see the main account that has created a LAN game.

At least I know Counter Strike works this way. :)

This is correct, install the game on all 4 pc's, you boot steam on each pc one at a time, set each one to offline mode and you can have all 4 pc's running from the one disk, not sure if you would have to use the multiplayer option, the dedicated server has a lan option which i use when i race with a buddy of mine against AI drivers, i host the server on my pc and connect to it via the lan multiplayer, but i have never set steam to offline when i do this, you cant connect to a dedicated server while in offline mode i am sure that is the case.

That would be a 'LISTEN SERVER', so long as you have like less than 8 players. that would will run fine. So long as the pc with the fastest CPU, also has the most ram, runs it.

And the dedicated server can run LAN or INTERNET, just not both. And you can load up Steam on a seperate machine with the same Steam-account, fire up the Dedicated Server, logout of Steam. Then, load up a completely different machine and run the Race 07 client.

in GTRē, there was option in the *.plr file to check duplicate keys, i would suspect they left that in Race 07. I've not tried the whole daisy chain concept, particularly since i have 5 or 6 GTRē's bought 2, got 2 free keys from computerbild.de, and also have 2 Race 07's that came with GTRē.

Developers deserve to paid for the products that they produce, we use, they got roofs too, mouths to feed, kids to clothe... etc...

I host the server and run my game from same pc, we use 23 AI but only 2 of us connect to the server and it does create slight lagging problems at close quarters, the more pc's that share a single internet connection through a router or wireless network the worse the lagging will be.

'Lagging' or in this case, stuttering caused by not enough bandwitdh, would likely be resolved using a dedicated PC for the dedicated server, and less AI. There shouldn't much bandwidth issues if all the clients are in LAN. I've discovered on my own 2.2mbps upload really only serves 10~12 online, in LAN bandwidth will not be an issue. Adding goo-gobs of AI drivers makes it worse online.

If your LISTEN Server still stutters in LAN, then that CPU isn't powerful enuff either. In which case, you'd probably be best served using one of the other PC's in LAN with a more powerful CPU running only the dedicated server.

Again Windows Server Operating System runs servers better than XP, Vista, and Winders 7. Maybe assembling another box with a fairly powerful cpu, a ton of ram ( 4gb or more ), a speedy HD, SCSI would be best, but are pricey, and a gigabit NIC, would produce a efficient machine for serving.

If SimBin had made a Linux dedicated server, it would sooo rock the casbah!

I have 5 computers, running from 1 account on Lan, ! person hosts, gives the game a name, dont bother with a password. the click on LAN, search for game. when found, click JOIN, and and you are in. If you are lucky.
You may get "BOOTED AS SUSPECTED CHEAT". This happens even if your mate brings his computer with entirely different copy of the game. (versions must be the same) Bandwidth not a problem.if this happens, don't expect any help from Atari or Simbin. I 11 months I've got through to them by telephone 3 times. I've spent over 20 day in that period where I've nothing from 10 till 4 o'clock but ring continuously, 1 after the other.
when my friend s come over a blast we all use the same account. we've got a mini community going. they all own genuine copies of Gtr2, Race 07, Gtr evolution Race on & sttc. We've paid our dues. I'm personally responsible at least 30 games out there.
As far as developers having roofs & mouths. They should live in holes, & eat poo. You sell a product and support it you're con men. I've been conned. I won't buy another of their products

Paul... are you absolutely sure you or your friends don't have crucial game files modified? I asked for help from Atari when I had a problem via email, and they responded within a day or two. Instead of damning the producers of the game, try a different route, or when all else fails ask questions on here. There are many people willing to help you if you ask.

NO I'm the only computer literate one of the bunch. I've spent months trying different routes. Was having these problems even with standard untouched games. Sometimes it works, the next time it does't. may not work the 1st time but work on the 7th time. may not work at all for that night. everybody leaves, miraculously they all work. Why? If crucial things had been altered, they would stay altered, they won't suddenly work on the 50th attempt. I've sorted it now. these problems have made a better program problem fixer. I had go to those very files you mentioned and change, delete, or add lines. In order to make it work.

At the moment have 6 computers running seamlessly, no hiccups no glitches unless I've just changed something, but now because of my experience, any problems are just hurdles for now. I'm even modding tracks myself sorting some of those with known issues. I'm presently working out some glitches with a Grand valley speedway & grand valley east. (safety car sitting accross the start/finnish lin), amongst others. For this I thank Simbin.
The game is now a bout 36Gb in size. about 10 times the size. my mates are absolutely blown away by the stuff I've done, with obviously the help of the community. But more so by smoothly everything is running.
I'm happy you had you reply in such a short time. I'm still waiting for mine 2 months on.
Don't get me wrong. It is absolute a great game. (when it's working) but support it. answer th @%*$>^ phone. reply to emails even if it's only to say "we don't know, we'll look into it"
Right now its all good in the Hood. And , I might even buy the next instalment.
So I can fix that one aswell

I understand you. I bought three full copies of Race07 (with GTR Evo, STCC, Race On and Whatnot) and sometimes I can't connect to my dedicated LAN server. Specially when I invite friends, I swear!

Solution?

Uninstalling that uber shit piece of software and get back to rFactor.

rFactor always runs, and it does waaaaay better.

Last LAN session was ACE!

Sorry mate missed your last statement. Tried asking, in many forums, either no one else had the problem, or were interested in per-suing the problem, or knew the answer. I googled, Yahoo'd, bing'd, coppernic'd I even asked Jeeves. To no avail. I think its because most people play multiplayer online rater than over LAN hence incidences are going to be less.
I Damned the producers for not supporting, and I still stand by that damnation. If produce a product. I don't expect Jimmy up the Hill or Brad down the Pitt to fix it on my behalf. That is my job my duty as producer of said goods. English people as a race are too accepting. That's why we pay more fore everything than anyone else. Even when we complain, we still accept it and pay.
I feel they've left the product for a great community to sort out for them selves.
Netgear ring you back, D-link ring you back, Bt, ring you back. They have a facility to at least leave a massage, they have follow up emails and calls.
Simbin ???????????????

Yeah got rFactor aswell, and no complaints as yet, but to be fair haven't been able to play much as I've sorting the pooh with Simbin software. but now it sorted. Will be delving deep into rfactor. Now got this modding stuff upto speed and behond the sky's the limit:-D

It means I installed the same account and all files and progams on 4 computers to eliminate the "mismatch" error message I was getting when there were 4 different accounts. some times it worked, most times it did'nt.
RESULT= NO DIFFERENCE:-)
