I have most of the cars for the car pack but I'm reluctant to distribute it without all the cars for the group shot.

As we almost have a full grid, I'm also reluctant to try and recruit people we have not met on the server between season.

Last time we did a mass recruit of people we didn't know, the season was a disaster with lots of bad behaviour.

Can see where your coming from Frank, I think we are lucky to have a fairly decent size field of guys here that know how to make the racing and fun nights enjoyable for all...if it ain`t broke, don`t fix it.....;-)

We have picked up quite a few new runners for this season, and at this stage I agree with the above posts.

Just put in a 'learning' session with Hoss on the server, had a blast, and now feel pretty confident with the track. Awesome track btw, built for these things, and allows for some great racing.

See you guys tomorrow (today?) for some action.

I bought a new network card today, just need to get the box of tricks opened up, plug it in, wire everything else back up, have a shower and remove all the dust and cobwebs that will no doubt emerge, follow the easy to follow install/setup instructions, and hey presto I'll be back online ;-)

Kritter (and Frank): AFAIK the practice track is in Frank's hands, my work is done (I think... Prof?). I'd be keen for more Riverside now that I have had a run on it, but happy just to share the same tarmac as you guys (ahhhhh)

Frank: Are we good to go for the season once all the skins are in? Just the car pack and gdb to do? I'm not sure on how the gdb works online, but I have a fair bit of experience in hacking them to do non-standard things for offline championships, so can help if it turns out to be more than a 5-minute task.

Freddy: We're probably better not to discuss that here, folks can search the post if they want to see what went on, and we don't want to attract the trolls in this direction.

Logged on last night, keen to try some laps at Canam and try Krit's and Appolyon's setups. Blow me if I didn't actually have the track in my P&G install  Couldn't believe it, I was sure I'd played with the Elans and Fezzas there, very strange. It was in my GTR2 install so no problem to copy it over (I must get the tracklinker set up!).

It's even better than I thought in these cars. I guess they have the power to make any corner a challenge, but there are 3 180 degree hairpins which I am battling with, and as for the two long decreasing radius right handers, how much fun are they!? And with the width of the place, you can actually stuff up going into a corner and catch it, it isn't total wipeout every time. I am still 4 seconds off the pace though so that will probably change as I get nearer the times I should be turning.

Didn't realise that the River Phoenix song was an Aussie export (to NZ, and nowhere else), always thought it was American. Whenever I've said/sung "I'm on the drug that killed River Phoenix" either here or in the States, I've got the strangest looks, and been amazed that no-one knew the reference. And Sir Ed. had Everest in his veins - can't argue with that either. Nice one.

Sean and I had a few laps around Riverside the other night with a visitor from GC (a nice guy called FLA$H) and really enjoyed the racing, but even being extra careful it was so easy to give the guy in front a shove in a few places, notably braking for the first left hand hairpin, the right before the back straight (any late lift = contact), and the super fast left hander (because there are so many different ways of attacking it).

I think its going to be a different season of racing from previous because these cars just seem to be harder to race nose to tail with than previously. On the other hand, its so damn hard to pass in them, we could see some really good race-long battles if both guys can keep it together and not touch. Looking forward to kicking it off.

PS Frank I finally fixed my cars and updated them in the downloads section. Do we have all the skins in yet?

No chance of getting this track in the list for next season then?! At least it is wide so you have options about where on the track you want to be, I never got my head around Mosport because it seemed too narrow for these monsters.

hardjack79
26 February 10, 13:33
Yeah I hear what you're saying, its got universal acclaim as a good track, and I'd like to include it, but the others are good tracks too. The obvious solution is to make it a 7 race season, but I'm very reluctant to do that for a number of reasons, not least of which is that it delays Frank's official season 6 comeback by at least 2 weeks.

If one of the other tracks is no good for online racing (I've tested them all reasonably thoroughly offline) then Riverside is a no-brainer for a substitute.

If there is overwhelming support for this track as a championship round instead of a particular one of the other tracks then perhaps we could swap them, but I imagine everyone has their own top 6 pick and we'll never get consensus on it, which is why I think its probably best if we just stick to the list as it currently is (which was reduced down from a spreadsheet of 60 possible venues and a lot of downloading and bug testing by me and Sean --- don't worry, it was all about finding black holes, pit issues, SC issues, timing issues, etc, I'll be just as unpracticed and slow at these tracks as I always was).

But just because Riverside isn't a championship race doesn't mean we can't have a proper warm-up race there if we want  :-)

Daveyraveygravey
26 February 10, 13:44
All good with me, one man's meat is another's poison etc etc. When are we looking at starting? Is there a list of which track version to download yet etc?

Some of us need more practice than others! ;-)

Freddyfartbox
26 February 10, 15:43
Sorry for the delay guys, I was sick with the flu and haven't spent much time in front of the PC lately. I only have a couple of minor things to do to my skin to get it finished, then create the stand alone. Actually I'm a little confused on exactly what's needed in the Mask file, been a while since I put car together.

I was just watching a few replays from last season, man what a ball I had racing that Alfa with you guys. I miss the Alfa TBH, such a great little car, I had some awesome battles in that. I laughed my ass off watching the Ruapuna replay, lap 1 heading into the hairpin and I braked waaaaayyyyyyyyyyy too late, took out Speedy and barely missed T-boning Richard. Richard was apexing the hairpin just as this red and white blur screamed across in front of him, musta got his attention, lol. And that battle with Bruza at Infineon was a massive high point for me, intense battle for lap after lap. Man I'm getting psyched for this next season, this is such a great bunch of guys to race with.

In that case why not make the series 8 rounds and include Riverside and another track as well. Six rounds seems a little too short to me TBH, considering the amount of work that has gone in to the skins. ;-)

You came to the right place, mate. I've spent the last two weeks cursing these mask files (there are two) and wondering why my cars didn't look like I wanted them to.

The mask file with the car number at the start, e.g. 66024_FORD_GT40_BODY1_MASK.DDS goes in the FORD_..._MASK.GTR file, and I always thought it looked after the dirt accumulation throughout the race, although after talking to some skinning gurus I'm not sure anymore.

There is another mask file (same dimensions: 1024x512, greyscale, DXT1 no alpha) that can just sit in the standalone car's directory that doesn't have a car number, e.g. FORD_GT40_BODY1_MASK.DDS. This overloads the file that sits in the GT40 root directory and controls the reflectivity of the surface, what those in the know call the "specular map" (learnt that yesterday). White is full reflective, black is full matte.

For my cars I used the same mask file for both DDSs, and it was just a very quick and crude clean up of the stock mask file for one of the cars to remove the door spots, pin stripes, etc. Another quick way of doing it would be to make a grey scale (dither to 8 shades perhaps) copy of your skin, then colour select each shade and change it to the reflectivity you want, lighter being more reflective. That way you could quickly make the body 50% reflective, the stickers 80%, or whatever. I liked the dirtiness of the existing mask file so I chose that route instead.

I think that's it. If you have any questions fire them to me while its all fresh in my mind. We all do this every 4-6 months, and every time we forget how.

...I laughed my ass off watching the Ruapuna replay, lap 1 heading into the hairpin and I braked waaaaayyyyyyyyyyy too late, took out Speedy and barely missed T-boning Richard. Richard was apexing the hairpin just as this red and white blur screamed across in front of him, musta got his attention, lol.

Remember it like it was yesterday . Also remember trying to hold you up later on in that race too, but you got me out of turn 1 I think. I must test the compression in the old Modil Alfa, I just couldn't get on the pace last season. Must've been the car, eh?

PS I'll try and attach the mask file I used, in case its useful. I did warn you that its crude though, right? Blast, it converted it to jpg, but should be okay as its only a mask.

Freddyfartbox
26 February 10, 19:32
That Mask file explanation makes absolutely no sense whatsoever to me at 3:16am in the drunken state I am, though I'll blame you and not the almost entire bottle of bourbon I have consumed up till this point.:-P You also might notice how even whilst drunk my spelling and grammar never falter, and I never, no matter how drunk, replace the word 'have' with the word 'of', unlike countless people on these forums, some of whom we compete against in virtual automobile races. Actually now I'm not so sure I should of made that last statement, I think I could of been more discreet, maybe I would of if I gave a tug.:-P:mrgreen:

By not assigning the mask file you your cars chassis GMT's with a unique number the Default 66079 car will be affected by your mask WHEN ON TRACK.

I doubt the other FORD_GT40_BODY1_MASK.DDS file will do anything because that is only used by cars with the default chassis reference in the chassis GMT's of which there are none in P&G.
