View Full Version : [DiRT2] NoGrippers in for some online racing?

redi
20 April 10, 19:27
After finally getting DiRT2 to work again on my PC (thanks Codemaster CS!) I got online to race against jcarno, which was great fun (despite him almost totalling my car by rolling me over ). Any more NoGrippers looking for some fair but hairy online racing?

Maybe we should indicate here what day and time people would be available.

For me it would usually be Mondays ~22:00 CET or Tuesdays ~20:00 CET :)

Me too. Yes, that was incredible fun. Can't imagine what it would be like with more players. After May 3rd I won't be available till after 5-6 EDT. 8-)

I'd join y'all, but I'm not home until 5pm(pacific) weeknights. If its later than that, I might stop by for a run or two.

That would be night hours for me then :crying: I don't think the wife would appreciate that ;)

And how do you get the mic to work? I had both plugged in, and I could hear, but couldn't speak. That might not be a bad thing though  Redi, did you get an invite yet? I don't think we need that anyway. At least not to hook up and race.

Redi, drop me a line on steam then :)

Maybe we should try making the group more active again :D I don't race online alot tho, and as you know my wheel is still m.i.a. So maybe an online regular could organise something via steam.

Dropped you a line. I think. I added you as a friend, guess that's good? :?:

I think we need to gather some Steam/GFWL usernames of the people here, so we can add them to our lists of friends to invite for races when online :)

Ok, lets get the ball rolling tonight. I think 20 CET=15 EDT=3pm for me. I should be able to make it. I would prefer to not do any rallying. I would like to do all multivehicle events. Some of the truck and buggie stuff. Tracks don't matter.

I find the multiplayer interface very clunky. Thank God we have Redi to take control of that. If anyone has any other opinions speak now or forever hold your peace. :-)

redi
27 April 10, 13:56
I find the multiplayer interface rather clumsy as well, but I think I can reproduce what I did last time  I should be able to hop online around 20:00 CET and set up a server. Stadium races with multiple cars, you got it :) Hope to see a bunch of you tonight!

jcarno
27 April 10, 14:17
Not sure what you mean by stadium races. Do you mean L.A. in particular? I was thinking more on the lines of Morocco, Malaysia or even Utah. I've never driven the trucks at Utah. Not even sure it's possible.

It would be nice to have everything predetermined before jumping in so we don't waste alot of racing time while deciding. Depending on how many people we get, maybe each person can choose an event/vehicle combo. Hopefully others chime in here with ideas.

Man!!!.......I'm starting to get the same feelings I used to get back in the early days of the now defunct NoGrip racing league. Can't wait really. :drive2: :drive:

redi
27 April 10, 14:22
I'm up for anything, so let me know what you would like to race. Trucks in Utah sounds possible to me, as do buggies in Morocco :)

jcarno
27 April 10, 14:27
Well, those are my opinions. Like I said, hopefully others will come up with other ideas. I am up for anything also. Just wanna get my ass racing against humans again instead of predictable A.I. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There are a number of different disciplines possible. Choosing one pretty much decides the type track you race on.

Rally
Rallycross
Trailblazer
Landrush
etc

If you want to run trucks or buggies or something other than cars, you pretty much have to choose "Landrush" for the discipline. When you choose that, the choice of venues will be the outdoor circuits. Then you'll have 6 choices of vehicles or combinations. One choice is "trucks and buggies". Most of the other 5 single out vehicles, like Trophy Trucks is one choice.

If you choose Rally, Rally Cross or Trailblazer you're stuck with the appropriate set of cars for the choice. Sounds like y'all are going to want Landrush.

It is possible to get Multiplayer to give you wide open combinations, like rallycross cars @ Utah, but I'd suggest you agree ahead of time before doing that. You run into those mismatched combinations online every so often and they usually suck bigtime.

It probably would work best in the short time you've got for someone to make a suggestion up front and see how that works.

darock, thanks for your reply. How about you join us. This will be our only 2nd attempt at doing this. Even though the first time was a whole lotta fun, I think with a little refinement it can become even more fun. Also, could you verify that I have my time correct. Does 20:00CET=3:00pm for East Coast USA? I have to leave now and won't be back till around 2:30. Hope to see you there.

jcarno

Another fun session! Apparently 2100CET = 1500 NY :) If only we could get some more people to join...

jcarno
27 April 10, 19:45
Oh.......so that would've been 2pm. Sorry :-( Don't look good for me after today as I go back to work on Monday and I never know when I'll be getting home. The weekends is about the only time we'd be able to hook up time wise. After you get your new PC you can give the wife the one you're using now and she can join in

Not sure if there is a way to force cockpit or no automatics. For the most part this is for fun. Would be nice to have more than 2 of us because Redi is getting too easy to beat  :-P

Yes, you can force cockpit view, but remember, it's not a sim and the cockpit view really does block way more than you'd see from a real car. It was quite a disappointment, but also not a huge loss.

Also, if you run many rallycross or landrush starts, you'll find you're at a major advantage on the starts. The view from over the rear bumper allows you to see the drivers trying to spin you out, and they will if you can't see them. And your race is effectively over. You might catch a backmarker, but odds are on him to turn you around too. You're basically helpless. It's the aspect that absolutely sucks about the game. Choose the driving view where you can see to defend or you're lunchmeat.

redi

I use cockpit view only, in any race sim, but I use TrackIR to so looking around me is a little easier :)

I'd say I'd be getting less easy to beat when I'll be playing more often, since I hardly know any track by heart at the moment. The more I race, the better that will become

Nevermind.

The only problem for me and cockpit view is that when you have a little wreck, the the windshield shatters and it makes an all ready hard to see track even harder to see. I think we can all agree that this is not a true "sim" in the sense of the word. And we are not running a league with points and prizes. I prefer to keep the anal out of this and just get together and have fun. I drive this game from bonnet view but would never consider driving GTR2 or any of the RACE games from anything other than cockpit.

Yes, the hardest part will be getting us all together at the same time. I'm usually available most Saturdays after noon EDT and weekdays after 1800.

I'm down for a little action now if anyone else is interested. I really don't want to be in charge of fumbling around with the interface. I'll hang out here a while and see if there's any takers. :whistling:

Are online replays saved somewhere, by the way?

Next time we get online I'll try to record a full race using Fraps. Only problem is whenever I record a replay, the FPS drop down into the 20s while recording. But when watching the replay afterwards, it runs normally. I'll try and configure Fraps to record at lower quality, maybe that'll help. Right now I have it set for 60fps Full-size. I'll try 60fps half-size. Let me know when you want to give it a try. I'm available now for a couple hours. Hint Hint!!!! :-)

Something I just read on the Fraps update page: Major changes in this version:

*
New feature for registered users - loop recording.
*
Press and hold the video capture hotkey to start a 30 second buffer.
*
The framerate counter will turn pink (magenta) to show that video is being buffered.
*
When you want to save the action simply tap the capture hotkey and the recording will continue as normal (including the previous 30 seconds of footage). Does this mean we can record now without the major fps hit?

Just recorded some online racing. Ran good even while recording. The only view that gets recorded is my view. I ran in cockpit. Should make for some cool videos in the future if we ever can organize something :whistling:
