If anyone needs help with various modifications to GTR2, just PM me.
The type of files I modify mostly are as follows (listed with a few of the many things you can modify):

PLR - (Player file) - everything from graphical tweaks (eg - I increased the glance Left/Right angle so I can actually see what's coming down the track when I rejoin after an off) to messing with AI, sounds, game settings & lots more.

GDB (in Championships folder) - Create your own custom championships with your choice of cars & tracks + race start time (it can be fun to race at sunrise/sunset & obviously night racing) & endurance events.

GDB (in Track folder) - Player & AI grip levels, number of laps @ 100%, you can even add 'AI tirewear' command (not normally present).

AIW - Race , Qualify & overall AI performance, tweaking AI racing lines & speeds at waypoints.

TRK - Track objects & collisions. FPS improvements by removing or modifying 'shadowcaster' or 'shadowobject'.

HDC (in Teams folder) - Various AI tweaks, Car performance - you can even change cars to FRONT or FOUR wheel drive for a bit of fun.

DMG - Change how sensitive car parts are to being damaged & chances of bits falling off (I hated wings & wheels falling off every time I crashed - not very realistic, so now my car gets knackered without being stripped!).

It's really easy to start modding, and you can get as deeply into it as you like or just tweak a few things to improve the game significantly.
Always make a backup of files you modify so you don't get online mismatches or mess up something.
Have fun
Tony

Hi Tony,

thanks for your offer. Why don't you just join the NGMT?

Nice idea. How about giving us aspiring co-modders some tips on, say, improving FPS on a track? We might learn something and help improve things for more people.

(Fps-wise, I already know about reducing the second ClipPlanes value in the .scn and changing Dynamic shadows to Static. But that isn't enough to increase FPS for Mid-Ohio on my system, for instance).

Hi,
I never really appreciated what a fine job the Virtua_LM guys did for Mid-Ohio. When you're racing you hardly notice all the detail.

You can completely remove shadows or reduce their resolution to gain more FPS. I notice Mid-Ohio has lots of shadowcasters for posts, cones & trees. If you completely remove these it won't be as noticeable as removing the shadow for a large building for example. Secondly, it has lots of high res shadowobjects for buildings which are never seen from the track as the buildings are set quite far back.

To reduce shadow resolution, the simple rule is that the only numbers used are - 1,2,4,8,16,32,64,128,256,512. As you reduce the resolution to very small numbers, the shadows get larger & you start to see polygon shapes.

Be careful when messing with some shadows at Mid-Ohio as I noticed it can result in flickering objects.

To be honest, I would just remove all shadows completely at this track - you never see them anyway.
Just do it gradually & test each time with time x60 just to make sure you don't get bugs.

Of course, if all that fails to improve FPS significantly, then you can always just remove entire objects - start with stuff which you can't see from the track. At Ledenon (France) I found loads of cars/lorries etc BEHIND the pit area where you would never normally drive.
I'll have a go at Mid-Ohio myself if you're still having problems.
Have fun
Tony

Hey Tony, you say you do mods for GTR2. What about rFactor ? I found an aiw problem in 1 track i use where the ai stab their brakes on the start line making me so much faster. :(

Here is the track in question, http://www.megaupload.com/?d=SCIUS01Y

Melbourne WCP with Y E S's texture update. :)

Ahhh sorry man, I don't have rFactor
That sounds like a pretty unusual problem. I know how to edit AI driving lines & speed adjustments at waypoints on the track (in GTR2), but if they only do it at the start & not on every lap then that's a mystery.
Really sorry I couldn't help, but hopefully there are plenty of rFactor modders on here who can.

Hi Tony:

Do you have the ability to create a reverse track? I have a track that had at least one race that was run in reverse and I would like to recreate that.

Do you have any ideas or would you like to take on this effort for my personal use?

Thanks,

gazman

you would have to make a new .trk and .aiw files at minimum.

try replacing the .aiw file (maybe called something else in rfactor) from the original version of the track. make a backup in case it don't work.

Best thing to do is ask people who've made reverse tracks. If you wanted to use AI it would take forever to manually change the AI waypoints (there are hundreds of 'em), so you'd be better off using editing software.
If there's a simple way to reverse the track direction just by changing a variable somewhere I'd love to know myself.
When I start track building I'll investigate how track direction is defined, but until then you may want to ask any track builder on here. I recall gobi did a reverse Sugo.

I have always wanted to mess around with the car performance attributes just for some fun.

Any chance of a "guide" or "how-to" for playing with some minor/basic settings? HP/TQ levels, rear/front/awd driveline settings, tire size (width/grip levels), vehicle weight, etc etc.

Thanks either way. Appreciate the offer.

I've sent you a PM. You will need to edit HDC/ENG/TYR files
HDC is the easiest to modify without needing to get too technical.
Remember to backup files by making a copy and putting it somewhere safe.
I have several GTR2s - Modified/PnG/Pilsbierbude & one unmodified version I called 'clean install' so I never need to backup anything.
Have fun

Is there a way to lock out the tires in the garage so when you switch compounds on the front the rear corresponds? For example say you select soft front tires, the rear tires automatically switch to softs and vice versa?

Hi,

Thanks for the offer of help, the GTR2 community is really supportive.

I just discovered the Formula Atlantic and Spec Racer Ford mods (two of my fave formulas). I downloaded them and installed them in what I thought was the proper way. I see the files in my Game Data folder but when I open GTR2 they are nowhere to be found. I just see the standard GTR2. I must be doing something wrong with where or how I installed the mods. Can you give me some guidance.

AND THANKS AGAIN!

Sam
