Where's the 'best time' ghost?

When I'm racing for the first time after turning on the computer, I don't see the ghost. Only from my second run do I see one. And it's not my best time. It's the best since running the game today.

So there I am chundering along, and see myself over taking myself, and think - "cool, I'm ahead of my best time" then I get to the end, and see that I haven't beaten my own record at all, just the best one today. What's going on?

Does anyone know if there's a fix?

you have to 'save progress' before leaving a stage/rally for it to remember your best time ever ;)
