I am about to build a new PC and as i am planning to play iRacing much i wanna know what graphic card is recommended to be sure to play this game at 60 fps++ at full quality.

I am thinking about either Radeon HD 5870 1GB or 2 x GTX 460 1 GB in SLI config.

I'm using a 5850 and get 45 fps minimum and 60+ nearly all the time at absolute max quality.
I drop to 45 only when I'm on a straight in the middle of a pack of cars.

I guess a 5870 will be more then enough to get to 60 all the time.

Mind you, I am using a slightly older CPU (Intel dual core @ 3.00 GHz), so if you use an i7 (and I presume you will) then maybe a 5850 is enough.

What is the spec of your other components you're choosing?

Especially monitor. What resolution will be the biggest factor in choosing a graphics card.

5850 is enough but be carefull with CPU, mine 5850 Toxic is more then enough for iRacing with following settings:
1920x1200 resolution, 4xAA Supersampling, 16AF all else maxed, only problem is with ingame shadow settings which is limited with 2,66 quad I have, go for newer Intel quad and you should be fine, of course if you plan to use eyefinity check hardware section at iRacing forums for recomendations

Hi again

My specs will be the following:

- Intel Core i7 930 + watercooling for overclocking.
- Asus P6X58D-E motherboard
- CoolerMaster HAF X case
- OCZ DDR3 PC3-12800 Platinium 6GB
- Corsair HX 850W
- Samsung Spinpoint F3 1GB

Monitor will most likely Samsung Syncmaster XL2730 1920x1080

I am planning to use 1 monitor atm.

I guess i will go for the 5870 and maybe overclock it a little if nescessary...

Thanks for the help guys.

That will give you well over 60 fps (ie, perhaps overkill if iRacing is all you'll be playing).

My specs:
q9550 @ 3.4 ghz
4 GB ram
GTX 260
1080p

And I run everything on full except AA and 95% of the time I get 120 fps.

I concur with Mickey Mouse. I do iRacing with about the same setup as you propose except using nVidia 470 graphics. My hard drive was the bottleneck, went to 150 GB Raptor for Windows and programs. Gained framerate and boots in about 20 seconds. Use 1GB HD drive for junk. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136296

With those specs I'd go for the 5870.
The 5850 is just not up to the same level as the rest of your pc so it would the bottleneck of your pc if you went for it.

I presume you will be running a 64bit OS?

Also, I agree with FastTex. Get a second HDD for your OS. It really helps and does not cost that much.

Hi again

I will use Win7 64bit and about the HD i thought it would be sufficient, but i guess iRacing write more data to the HD during races then what rFactor do, so i see why it can be a bottleneck.

But i am planning to get a SSD later this year when Intel releases their 3rd gen.

And about the 5870, how much performance increase is it compared to the 5850? And MickeyMouse get alot of fps on his GTX 260, maybe i should go for Nvidia GTX 460 if it`s the "best bang for the bucks" ?

i would recommend SLI...i have 260gtx SLI and no frame drops..with
max quality...460 will be a bit better then

Complete overkill when he's running on a single monitor.

5850 will do the job. But as said 5870 will give a little more future proofing and will help with other games too.

I don't see the problem with the HDD, get a decent modern HDD with a large capacity and there won't be a problem at all.

Get a 5850 and a motherboard that can handle cf and you'll be safe! just get another 5850 in a while when the 6000-series comes out and the 5000-series drops =) that should do it!
