addicted to iRacing

I have been eyeing off iRacing for months now wondering if I should join or not. I have to admit that I was turned off by the monthly subsription fee initially. Well curiosity got the better of me. I signed up for a month just as a trial and I have been addicted to it for 2 days now. I don't really get off on the ovals but I am loving racing my little Pontiac s**tbox around Laguna Seca. can't wait for pay day so i can buy more content.

Anybody who is undecided I would recommend you give it a go.

And that's why I have not bought iRacing.

I am in no doubt that it would be the best sim ever but I cannot justify the outlay.

Just put it all on a DVD, charge £40 for it and BAM!!! Deal done.

Trouble is, Iracing is a continual work in progress. So it can continue to be the best sim out there.
You can't achieve that with a £40 outlay one off payment.

And MP racing is not the same anywhere else. Few or no proper servers and no respect on the track.

Considering the number of people on Iracing that have a large amount of content, and the fact they are yet to make a profit. It's this way or no way at all.
I know what i'd prefer :)

so I can buy, e.g. $60 gift certificate for myself then sign up and top up with that and I don't need credit card

I have e mailed iracing about no credit card and they never mentioned gift certificates just a pre paid card.

Why not get a Visa debit card like I have? Whenever I use it as a credit card it just draws from my savings, I don't actually have a credit limit on it so it's like a Claytons credit card.

And Freejrs, if the subscription puts you off that's just because you don't understand what you are missing. I thought the same before I tried it. Put it into perspective with other things you spend money on every year and it makes more sense. Like food for example.:-D

Yes, you pay every month but I've bought all I need now and the actual monthly cost is about £6 or $10 a month, I'm subbed through to March 2011, I bet you buy more than 2 games per year and they don't get updates every thirteen weeks - so cost wise it's not so different, just an alternative model.

More importantly it's worth every penny (or cent).

Yeah well I eat too much food already so maybe I can eat £6's worth less food each month and be able to afford it.:-D

I am in no doubt that iRacing is as good as everyone says it is........but what will become of all my other sims if I get hooked on this?:-D

It's okay. Not the 'end all be all' especially compared to GTR2 and GTL. I haven't really done much with it lately myself as I got tired (as 'the slow guy') getting bunted off the track by the faster guys (who later boasted about it in chat and were agreed with) and have been busy with GTL. Yes, it took me some time to get past the 'subscribe' thing and all in all, I like it but it's still an alternative rather than 'blows everything else away' because well, it doesn't. I actualy thought at first Silverstone was a copy of the tracks we use in the 'other sims'. It's okay but still basically a PUB server you pay for.

Yet, I DO like it, find myself also addicted and keep coming back. My comments aren't meant to be as negative as they sound, just my honest opinion. It seems a lot who praise it have HUGE blinders on but I've always suspected they never played any other sims so give them leeway there.

I also believe firmly in supporting it as I love the laser scanned tracks and content takes time and I don't mind waiting for a quality job.

Speaking from personal experience, iRacing has pretty much ruined every other sim for me. Going back to GTR2/PnG or rFactor they just feel so flat and lifeless by comparison. Actually that might be a bit harsh, they mostly still feel good, but I definitely notice what's lacking in them more now. Some mods that I used to drive just feel terrible to me now. I think it's down to the feedback you get with iRacing, you really notice when it's missing. Plus most other sims just feel sluggish with steering response now I'm used to iRacing. At first iRacing's steering response felt too sensitive to me, now it's the opposite.

And Mr Dent is right, it's not the be all and end all. It's really just another sim experience to have in your collection I suppose. They each offer something different.

I hear you, I was supposed to drive a rFactor Porsche Cup car in a league this year, trying to defend my nice result from last year, but after ten minutes of practice I just uninstalled.

I have not driven any other sim at all since I started driving the Skip Barber back in may or something.

for me, I think the stand out feature are the physics. I have never raced anything other than a hire kart at Eastern creek but the cars handle exactly how you would expect them too. In addition to that, too many times in Rfactor and GTR2, if you fall off the track oh well, you lose a couple of tenths. In iRacing it's pretty costly usually taking seconds and ruining your race. Having said that I will still play the other sims and am looking forward to Codies F1 2010. Please don't dissapoint.

I pay with PayPal gaz, it is set to draw from a bank account, not a credit card.
iRacing tells me that because I am using paypal, the auto renew doesnt work and I need to be aware of this. You can 'un check' the auto renew box.

Prepaid CC is an option, but I imagine the cost would be up there?
