View Full Version : Alright, We May Have a Public PnG Server Up For Good

So as was mentioned in the Legends Bros Mod thread, a lot of us seem to want to play PnG online together, but are having trouble finding each other.

As I mentioned, my buddies and I race PnG frequently, just about every weeknight from maybe 8pm to 12am EST... But we'd been doing it on Novice mod, for the benefit of some lesser talented friends. :p

So we've discussed it, and we'll run the server on Simulation from now on, so hopefully you guys can join in. We've agreed that we DO play a lot of other mods, not just PnG, so we'll run the PnG Server on Mondays and Wednesdays, from maybe 4pm through midnight EST. It may be up other times than that, but his internet connection can be intermittent with low periods of activity. On other days, the server'll be floating around Sim or Novice, with other mods if anyone wants to join too.

As far as PnG, I'm gonna list a few tracks we like to race on here: if any of you guys have some suggestions and plan on participating, let them be heard here. Understand that for now, this is a VERY CASUAL plan, so there's no structure to how long we practice, or qualify, or the racing, or whatever. We just wanna get together and drive these cars and have fun, and worry about organizing a race later.

Machwerk
Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course
Monaco79
Long Beach79
Hockenheim
Symmon's Plains
Pukekohe
Riverside

All of the stuff we run is available here on NoGrip, and any custom paint schemes we may use are up on http://www.blinkerfluid.net/gtr2, so if you're getting mismatches, let us know. We also hang out on IRC efnet in the channel #carsgtr2.

Let me know what you think guys, we really need to get a decent public Power and Glory community going!

ive also got a server running for p&g just now, but only standard cars and standard tracks. to make it much easier for not getting mismatches etc.
*power and glory* gtr2 lobby. changable weather and max 10 players.

sorry if i hijacked your thread a bit but 2x p&g is better than 1. also yours is modded up with extra skins/tracks. so kinda different.

your right, we need to get more people in to power and glory.

there already are some dedicated sim 24/24h p&g open servers, but they are almost allways empty.

Well, I suppose if we had enough people interested in racing, we could keep it the regular tracks... but so far the response doesn't seem to be very overwhelming...

I personally appreciate these efforts guys, even I feel like it comes a little too late for Part-I of the mod (issue with online numbers is not new) but perhaps not... let's hope everybody joins the party finally! :drive2:

Well, I suppose if we had enough people interested in racing, we could keep it the regular tracks... but so far the response doesn't seem to be very overwhelming...

...I suspect (or want to believe) that Part-II might change things here, as some of the most awaited cars will be coming (and with some new features completely unseen so far!). :)

...untill then, please keep at it if you really have enjoyed P&G so far and want to go online racing against other people.
Like many others, I too only come back to GTL now and then for the online numbers (which are not so good now either) only because there's noone racing P&G online when I look, otherwise... ;)

Hello, just posting the same as in the other thread...

...when you select classes please think about a balanced grid.

In the early days of P&G too many opened servers where "IROC" (Porsches), "70's Touring" and "GT over 2 Liter" classes would race with the "60's Touring" cars (Abarths, Minis, Mustangs, etc, etc), which eventually put people off since everybody was jumping on either the Porsche 911 or the Jag E-type. :(

Anyway, just a couple of suggestions but would be nice to see:

- server with both classes of "60's Touring" and "GT Under 2 liter".

Or

- server with IROC Porsches and 911 WideBody.

...see ya all online! :drive2: (I hope I can make it)

I love the idea and would participate.

Perhaps it should start off with somethin like a race weekend event, published in advance and requesting interested drivers to sign up for a date and class of vehicle? Advertized on most of the GTR2 community support forums, or a nogripracing mailout?

From there you could guage initial interest and generate interest in a more long-running series, set at a practical time like 10 PM EST, ha ha.

Food for thought,

ah, thanks for reminding me... efnet#cars now has a PnG server up in Sim Mode, for the most part 24/7, with a variety of tracks which I'll list below, since they're all add-on (and great) tracks. This is a North American server, feel free to use it, and we'll be on some evenings during the week from 8pm onward.

machwerk
nordschleife (the big one with the 8 different versions or whatever)
symmon's Plains
Detroit Street
Monaco79
LongBeach79
Mid-Ohoi Sports Car Course
Watkins Glen NASCAR
Pukekohe

More to come, possibly...

could you maybe put up links to tracks not available from nogrip?

And add Philip Island and Sandown :).

Some of the default GTR2/GTL tracks are great too.

Donnington, Dijon and Imola for instance.

When P&G first went online, there were two servers running. I went in but the one that was being used had HUGE amounts of time set for Prac and Qual.

I don't do those sessions, I'd rather start from the back. As a consequence I didn't hang around for an hour waiting for the race to start. And I could never get the hot lappers to vote next session. :(

Thanks for the comments. Would you please help me with some directions to the online community - since I don't know where to start and would like to try it out. I can find multiplayer in GTR2, and I do agree with sunalp2 that minimal time for Prac and Qual is the way to go to maintain interest.

Just go into multiplayer from the Main menu (it's on the right). The first time you go online, you will be asked to register your DVD key.

Make sure you have your difficulty settings on PROFESSIONAL, that will show you the largest amount of servers.

I always get confused as to which one is the right one on NoGrip, I don't blame you. We run the NOS Nordschleife.

Was going through the tracks trying to get to Mackwerk and got got booted as a cheat at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Is the latest version of this track installed?

Thx

I tried hopping on a couple of times over the weekend, but found empty servers.

One of the problems, I think, is that the servers that ARE up have been running tracks that aren't exactly "newb-friendly" (Nordschleife, Machwerk 1967) or they have been running non-default tracks that I didn't have installed already (Caruaru, etc.). On top of that, at least three different times when trying to connect over the course of the weekend, I received the "booted as possible cheat" mismatch message, so I've had to exit P&G, run the "PGPatcher" utility to either re-install or un-install the terrain patch, THEN log back on to find the server that booted me again.

Ultimately I was able to connect with the servers that booted me after switching the terrain patch status, but for the casual racer who just wants to hop online and run some laps it's quite a pain in the arse, especially when you end up running for a half-an-hour or so all by yourself . . . and I'm sure that by that point most people are thinking that they could at least be running offline against the AI, so why bother with multiplayer when it usually ends up being such a pain just to run laps all by yourself?

The lack of people online is very discouraging -- the terrain patch issue is one impediment, but the P&G team is at least trying to address that issue. What we really need, though, is some way to encourage more people to come online in the first place. I think it would help quite a bit if people hosting P&G servers would start following DucFreak's hosting recommendations (http://www.nogripracing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=15080) -- that would be a good first step, IMO.

Iv tried in vein to race online with the PnG mod but to no avail. I usually just give up and play rfactor. I can never find servers that are running it. Hopefully that will change now, look forward to seeing you guys online.

May I just suggest some more vintage style tracks.....

Oulton Park GP Circuit
Cadwell Park
Crystal Palace
2006 Charade
Goodwood

In that order........pretty please?:)

I hear a ton of complaints of no one racing online. Well we run a Sunday night P&G league over at Race2play and are looking for drivers. We use a dedicated race2play server and on almost any night you run into a few guys practicing for the next event.
Here is the important info:

The North American Sim Racing League (NASRL) is proud to announce its upcoming season at Race2Play, featuring the Power & Glory mod for GTR2.

This will be our 3rd season racing this wonderful mod. Races are Sunday nights at 9:30 eastern US time. Each event starts with a 10 minute qualifying session, followed by a short warm-up, and a 45 minute race.

The 8-race season gets under way on April 20th. We also have two fun-runs scheduled for March 30th and April 6th. The season is divided into two halves: the first half features a well-matched subset of the European Touring cars, the second half is all Falcons and Mustangs.

Last season we typically fielded about 15 cars, but our Race2Play server could easily handle another 6-8 drivers. Basic (free) membership at Race2Play is required to participate. If you've never heard of Race2Play, do yourself a favor and check it out- it's a great service that provides a staggering amount of well-run racing every month.

NASRL is all about competitive but courteous racing. Our membership spans a variety of skill levels from the very quick to the not-so-quick All we ask is that you be able to hold your racing line, and value a clean race well above winning at all costs.

For more info on the NASRL P&G season, see the stickies in our forum here: NASRL Chapter Forum

If you're interested in joining us, sign up at Race2Play here: http://www.race2play.com/, then message me to join the series: My R2P Homepage

That's all well and good Baston, but I think a lot of people aren't looking for the dedication required to run a league race... the specific practice/qual/race structure, the lack of choices for tracks, that sort of thing... I've thought about joining up myself, and probably will in the future, but I think a lot of people are just looking for public servers to jump on and race.

Sphara, we run the latest update of Mid-Ohio from PnG which features two course layouts, with and without the chicane. I forget the version number but there's only one with the two tracks, so check nogrip.

We run without the terrain patch. And sorry there weren't many people online, I think even though it's a public server, we really need to get in THIS THREAD and figure out a rough time to meet and race. Evenings during the week, Eastern Standard Time, is ideal, from 7-8pm until about midnight, but like yourself we don't necessarily feel like lapping around alone all night, so if a few users jump on this thread and say "I'll be there around Wednesday at 8" we'll try to be too!

tigeraid
31 March 08, 22:36
Oh and freejrs, I'll add those tracks to the server and maybe get rid of a couple. Hopefully there'll be admins around most nights to switch if someone isn't comfortable with Machwerk yet.

Spot-on, Tigeraid! I can join a league anytime I want to, but for the servers that people tend to keep up full-time for "pickup" races, it would be nice to have tracks available that didn't scare people off. Yours in particular is a good server, but unfortunately Machwerk is pretty lonely when you're all by yourself!

;)

Your server wouldn't have given me any problems with the terrain if I hadn't jumped on a server just before yours that DIDN'T have the terrain patch installed (DOH!).

:whoa:

I think you're onto something with the timeslot -- I'm on Easter Standard Time, too, so the 7:00 - midnight hours work for me . . . I'll try to jump online tonight to run some laps.

I dunno what to tell you other than to try reinstalling PnG... It has to be a car related issue in some way, if it's not the terrain error...

I'm having similuar problems as well with the server. When Machwerk track is up... I get booted as a cheat. I don't have the terrain patch applied, and I have done a fresh and separate install of GTR2 just for P&G Mod. On other tracks on the server... I get lockups, and my name doesn't appear at all. I have the latest Machwerk track installed. Don't know what the problem is ????????????

On Zoos P&G server, I don't have any problems joining at all.

I will have mcm restart the server, just in case. None of us are having any problems getting on...

OK.. I finally got it all sorted out, and am now able to connect to the server with the Machwerk track.. :D

The problem was that I had previously downloaded a patch for the Machwerk track that added lines to the sides of the road..... It had changed my player file ... and it kept trying to load a Machwerk track that had lines... once I deleted both the track with the lines.. and the appropriate lines in my player file.... everything worked fine. Was all a screw-up on my part...

Playing a bit with a bunch o you guys really does confirm, I do miss P&G -- blows away GTL, no matter what car you're driving.

(ps -- sorry for wrecking all of your abarths with my stang... severe clutz syndrome combined with broken virtual mirror == unintentional wrecker)

tigeraid
2 April 08, 03:34
Haha no worries, that was a GREAT first experience for our server.

Just a quick recap for those who weren't there: we had 8 entrants, with two Alfa Volumetricos, three Abarths, a Mustang, an Elite and an IROC Porsche starting at the back with a beginner. We forgot to shorten the race distance, so it was a grueling 20 laps! mcm and I swapped the lead back and forth in the Alfas for the first 12 laps or so, then he wrecked, allegedly due to a wheel issue. I went on for the win, with Achmed coming in 2nd. It amazed me how quick the Abarths were!

So hey, hopefully we can make it a somewhat regular thing--again, no structure, no LEAGUE here, just some good times, and some other tracks on the server. Remember, most weeknights after about 8pm EST.

And yes, we've shortened the race distances :p

Was there last night just to have a quick look on pings and "general" atmosphere...

Pings are good (had no lag), tracks-list is insteresting but I saw some very "nervous" people onboard (brought memories of old GTR1 pick-up races... *eek*), hopefully that was a one-off.

Someone mentioned about chat on screen while on race (and in a rude manner, btw)... errr... there's an option (in multiplayer options section) that you can tick "ON" or "OFF" for enable/disable chat while on car.

...it can get a bit boring for those that are there but not racing (DQ's, car broken, etc) and waiting (long) for the next race, chat is a great help to make the time pass faster for those, so I hope that is taken to account, especially for those of us that are not graced with propper spoken english knowledge, just written (so voice-chat not an option).

Glad the race-lenght got down to 15 mins, seems perfect to me too. :)
I might get in later as well.

I was able to wrangle that Mustang around Cadwell too, but no matter how hard I pressed I couldn't match mcm in the Alfa, despite the cars being fairly equal in general... on a higher speed circuit it would've been more even I think. The Alfas really own that track.
