View Full Version : Star Mazda Season 4 2010

Okay so who else is going to be running the Star Mazda this Season?
What are your goals for the Season?
I guess I'm going to be in Division 3 or 4, in which case I hope to appear on the first page of the Division results with a stretch target of Top Ten.

I'll certainly be trying to get into this car more. My problem is I'm interested in running too many other cars too :D.
This may seem strange to road drivers, but I'm looking forward to the Phoenix oval and seeing how I fair there as opposed to the other courses :-P
Don't really have any specific goals, whatever happens happens....
AllanGP
1 November 10, 18:54
Phoenix will be my first Oval experience and I'm quite looking forward to it to.
You will have to share your set up for there! ;-)

You guys are talking like something interesting is happening at Phoenix???? I see nothing on the schedule? No world tour events?
And shouldn't you guys be running the williams in season 4 ;)
AllanGP
1 November 10, 22:28
One step at a time mate, one step at a time!!
Phoenix is part of the SM Season Schedule as the real championship goes there too.

I've done a 2.06.1 at Road America so need to find about a second in the rest of the week and I hope I'll be okay.
I never really took to Road America in the Skip (track is too big for that car) but in the Mazda the place is brilliant fun.
Loving the new shadows too. I seem to have lost about 5 FPS but well worth it!
rblanshard
2 November 10, 04:07
In practice, I'm running consistent 2.06's with a high 2.05 opti. I really like Road America. It is a big track, but with some good corners off long straights, should provide for some good passing opportunities. I need some practice with traffic before I go racing. Now that the World Series is over, I'll hit the track tomorrow night.
As for my goals, I want to win a SM race and finish in the top 25 of my division (I think I'll be division 3 as well).
AllanGP
2 November 10, 08:42
I hope we are in the same Division Robert it will add some extra interest :-P

I'm in Division 3 for all Series it looks like.

4 November 10, 19:33
Well, I can run a mid 2:06 at RA, but last night in my first race I could barely average a 2:08. But all the 2:06 and 2:05 guys managed to take themeselves out of the race and I still placed 4th with the last 5 laps basically running on bare threads. Those laps I averaged 2:10.
But it goes to show that if you race smartly you don't need alien times to place at a decent spot in the spread. Consistency pays off just as well sometimes. Just ask all the faster guys that were 2 laps behind me :)
AllanGP
4 November 10, 19:51
Yeah, I noticed that in a few races last season, if you run a reasonable time and avoid the carnage/mistakes you can get quite a few places in this series more than the Skippy.

I will need to find something more stable to race though.
Still plenty to learn in this car and my Opti is 4.2 now, so I should get in the 4's, hopefully before trying a race on Sunday.

You're going to do it, Allan. It's a big gap between your PB and op. so it's just a matter of time.

Well I might not do tomorrow's race after all, I've had a "real" car crash this morning! Got run into whilst stationary at a T Junction, car is a write off, my neck is sore and I have a headache otherwise I'm fine.

Looking at the stats for the first week the series is still healthy enough, however I doubt I'll actually get any races in it this season. I'm racing/learning arguably the 2 hardest road cars this season the V8 and the F1, I haven't even manged to get a skippy race in yet.

I spun on lap 4 going into turn 1, but I'm not sure I would have caught the guys in front of me had I kept it on track. I pushed a little too hard trying to catch up and my tires were shot in the final laps.
I think this is the lowest SOF I've had racing the SM.
This is a fun track/car combo.

The Intel GP Australia/Asia is on this week (right out of the blue). Was weird for the first few laps after driving the F1 and I am still a few tenths off last seasons pace but its good fun. I might even have a blast around Mid Ohio at some stage this week.

Looks high to me, rear is at 34 can't go higher than that front is 26.5 (33 is the most you can go).
Interestingly the set up is called "Tall Gear" but it is actually using the "Oval" set of gears unless you changed it? I've never run the car using the Oval set so I don't know how that compares.
Most tracks use the Tall Gear set - one doesn't can't remember which one though!
rblanshard
16 November 10, 21:26
That's odd, I just loaded up that set up and it has the gears on tall. I have a short gear setup too, I liked it more, but I was hitting the rev limit on the backstretch.

18 November 10, 00:55
That's awesome. My fastest was a 1.20.46 and you ran a 1.20.48. With some tweaking, I think we'll crack the 1.19 range.
I'll hit the track later and fiddle with my aero package, lower the wing settings a bit and see if I've got it in me.
AllanGP
18 November 10, 07:57
I am sure 19's will be possible I've not run too many laps yet.
The last third of the circuit is really fun and it's the first time I feel I can "slide" the car and get away with it (not that it is faster but usually a slide in the SM is deadly).
Really enjoying it so far this week.
I'm using Monica's Qualy set from the forum with tall gears.

Shame on me, indeed. Of all the tracks I've raced and tested, this - for me - is the perfect car combo. I've read good things about Infineon, but right out of the box, I felt competitive at Mid-Ohio.
Between work and laziness, I just haven't given myself the necessary track time to match you in the 1:19 range this week. I'm going to be a home-body tonight, and I promise I'll get in some time and lower my PB.

The only problem with low SOF races is you get fewer points for your result.

I got the Star Mazda this friday so I will be running a couple of races I think! I really like this car! just spent a little time getting to know it.. Most of my time this weekend has been spent on the FW31 xD
I'm down to a 1,44,3 and I think I can hit high or mid 1,43 little later in the week :) Since I've just gotten to know the car just a little bit yet :) What wings are you guys running? I'm not sure about setup yet so.. Read that setup guide :) very usefull! But haven't had time to test those things out yet..

Set a new PB in Qualifying (again!);

Yes! I've never used the Spotter thought I might be missing something but not now, I knew exactly where he was but did not expect him to turn in on me.
Luckily chassis rebuilds cost nothing (!) and that my first race was a decent enough points haul to make this result less important.
I think I'm in danger of starting to understand how this car drives now - say's he inserting foot in mouth!

I think it's an oval - converting to road - kinda thing.. Use your mirrors and think and look left, look right and some awareness you'll be fine xD
I really like this car! I really think I'm gonna concentrate on it full time next season! It's fast enough to not get bored of and lots of good competition. I like it!
I've just had the car for about a week so I'll just be running the tracks I already have this season. Meaning Silverstone, Road Atlanta and Watkins :) I guess... If I'm not missing any track in my thinking now.. lol
I got 154 points from a 6th place yesterday! Never had to fight that much for such a low position and have never started as low as 7th before I think! xD Never finished that low earlier either without it being because of an accident.. xD What a field!

I think a low DF setup definitely is faster around here.. There's very few corner you can't go really fast in with low DF and those straights and especially the long back straight is important for laptime..

I think a low down force set up is ultimately quicker on one lap. I quickly decided I wouldn't have the skill to race it so went back to the High Down force set up - as I didn't want to waste my time practicing something I would not race.
My skill level is gradually going up so who knows in a Season or two where I might get to. I shall keep plugging away.

Well, my only race of the week started extremely good. 1'17,738 was good enough for 4th on the grid. Get of the line really good and get 3rd even before T1. Lap 2, defending position into the last chicane, part 2 of the chicane, rear ended. The car was a skew and no reason to continue. Great.

Well the 2 races I had at Atlanta were disasters!
1st one I started well and was running nicely in 4th, clear track both directions and then brain farted the braking at turn 2 with 3 laps to go. Skidded across the grass hit a wall and broke the steering. Only incident of the race so the SR rose but dropped back to 8th so IR dropped.
2nd race was probably in amongst the strongest field I have raced in, my humble 1.19.7 qualifying only got me 10th on the grid. Got excited at the start and jumped the lights early (numpty) upon serving my stop and go I also got refueled up to the tank maximum and was then back running for the remainder of the race, incident free but killed by IR.
AllanGP
5 January 11, 21:09
Ran a few laps at Mosport just using the Atlanta set up, took 2 secs off my old PB getting down to 1.15.716.
My old PB was only from a handful of laps and I'm sure the set up needs quite a bit changing, is it short gears here, never got into 6th!
Anyway, will be aiming for low 14's before my first race on Sunday pm.

I have been testing a little bit too. Haven't really decided on aero yet.. Might go for medium downforce actually.. At least for race.. Overtaking here will probably only happen if someone's making a mistake so a lower DF should be good for defending.. Overtaking through these corners is not going to happen anyway.. So the back is where it'll happen if you can get the inside.. But in to the hairpin might be an opportunity though.. Really dangerous though!
Yeah I saw you in the session but actually I have voice-chat turned off :P Find it distracting and not usefull xD for me at least..
I haven't really gotten that perfect, or somewhat perfect lap together yet. But 1'14,2 as PB so far.. Never driven the track before! But I like it a lot! I love these fast sweeping corners and elevation changes!

because of the mayhem in these races at Mosport I finished 8th overall out of 19, gained 20 iR and 64 championship points, I've got an 11 point race to drop so I've gained 53 points in the championship. Lost a tiny bit on SR 0.04.

10 January 11, 21:03
I loved driving the Star Mazda at Mosport, but I only felt comfortable doing one race here last week. In fact, I raced yesterday and I was doing great, holding to third place in sight of the 1st and 2nd spot for aboput ten laps. Then my tires started giving out and I started losing over a second a lap.
Things got even worse as the race went on but I settled in 4th place and I managed to get to lap 29 driving conservatively.
Then on lap 29, 2 laps to go, disaster. On the fast turn before the final Ss (after the long uphill section) as I am entering the turn I hear this ominous "rumble" sound. Next thing I know, the car turned into a ballistic missile and I went straight into the barrier.
I was still able to finish 6th but it was very frustrating. The last flat I had was a Sebring (where I got 4 over the course of the week, 3 of them on the same day).
After looking at my setup, I discovered that I lowered the tire pressure for the qualification and i forgot to bring it back up. That gave me an edge during qualifying, but I guess the low pressure was too much for the tires and they didn't last for the entire race.
What the low pressure did was to eliminate understeer in T2, allowing me to take it flat out with lower wing. It also gave me a better line in the final Ss, but obviously that strategy only works for 10 laps or so. After that all my lines started going wide and finally the tire just blew.

But was a low SOF only got 97 champ points.. But was going to do the 20:30 GMT race tonight but decided not to cuss I wasn't feeling good =/
But yeah, the tires seem to wear pretty hard on this track.. Especially front left. At around lap 12 the car started sliding a bit so I backed off a little bit and the tires came back pretty good after 1-2 laps and I could keep the pace.. Or maybe it was me adapting.. I think a little bit of both though..
Never had a puncture in iRacing though :O

Blimy Allan, your slowly stepping up into Alien Territory with close second to Wyatt Gooden. Even if it was practice :)
I see the Star Mazda is the car being used for the world cup races too, i assume you'll be taking up the challenge come week 13 for Celtic?
AllanGP
15 January 11, 09:58
Nah, I'm not that good yet. Wyatt was 2 secs quicker than me :crying: so I have a fair bit to do yet.
However I don't think I've maxed out my performance at any track yet so a couple of more season's and who knows.
I'm really enjoying the Star Mazda. Although the Skippy is great I went back to it last night (because I've a race tonight with the Celtic lads) and what a difference! I didn't feel it stepping up but going back is hard.
I don't think I'll ever get Alien quick (but you should never say never) I'll be happy to be respectable in this Sim ;-)
My main encouragement is whilst there are some amazing Aliens around they all seem to have been Sim racing long before iRacing was around so I'm relatively "new" having only done it for 13 months. If I keep plugging away who knows what might happen. I'm not "naturally" quick but I'm a good learner
Mikel
15 January 11, 11:10
Your progression is fantastic, Allan. Being less than two secs off an alien (a real one) time in a 1.40+ sec must be respectable. Keep improving Allan, we want to see you win your first SM race!!
I plan to start running couple of practice sessions next season with the SM (after buying the content I plan to), but I fear that will kill the little "confidence" I have with the Skippy. I hope to run at least 8 weeks with him (Skippy), but mixing both cars maybe isn't a good idea. Anyway, although I get quicker bit by bit, I still feel my corner entry is really really slow (I break too much) because of the lack of grip sense. May I'll have to try different setups.
So I hope to see you all, (Allan, Emil, etc.) next season and give me some tips! :-P

15 January 11, 11:26
Yeah really good progress! Practice makes perfect!
Actually I wouldn't count myself to the experienced sim-racers either.. It's just very recently I have been able to race a little more whenever I want to on my "own" computer.. Well, I have been a fan of racing games since I was very little of course.. Always pretty fast but it's just now I been starting to get some more serious opportunity to drive a bit more..
I know I've got some speed naturally, but I need to learn to get those last tenths out of the car over one fast lap especially! Race pace I seem to be a lot more competitive and being very consistent. So far in iRacing though I have made some really stupid mistakes! That's why my iRating and winning percentage isn't higher.. I've thrown away quite a few victorys.. oh well :P
AllanGP
15 January 11, 14:23
Well it is all a learning curve and I'm really enjoying it. I think running the Skippy for three season's really taught me a lot about getting every last bit out of a car, momentum is so important in that car. Mikel I think you could run the Skippy seriously & dabble with the SM to build experience with it but not the other way around. When you start running it I'll be happy to try and help as much as I can.
I really appreciate the encouragement from you guy's, thanks.

17 January 11, 21:45
Phew! What a Race. There were 61 cars for tonight's 8.30 race, it was obvious it would be 3 x 15 and 1 x 16. Guess who ended up in the Top Slit tonight as number 16? I thought, well that's okay I'll be last on the grid and can pick up places taking it easy. Oh no! Since half the field hadn't qualified I'm 9th on the Grid and out of my depth. I get a much better start than the guy in 7th so I go along side him into T1 - and promptly slide wide - aaaarrrrrgh! Now at this point I thought I slid into someone passing me on the outside and caused quite a bit of chaos to other drivers so I apologised immediately to everyone involved.
Anyway decided to look at the replay before quitting and after two or three views realised that whilst I slide wide the guy on the outside also turned into me - more of a racing incident than fully my fault (although I was definitely partly to blame). By this time three or four laps are run and a couple of people have left on Lap 1 so I think hang on I might rescue something out of this. I let the whole pack go by and joined at the back. Taking it very easy to begin with I get caught by the Leaders and let them through again.
By this time I realise my car is not too bad (quite bad but not undriveable). I press on. To cut a long story short I ended up 10th (could have been 9th if I had got straight back in the race, instead of viewing the replay - lesson for next time).
I actually gained iR and only lost 0.06 SR.
So an altogether different race experience but in it's own way very educational.

Anyway decided to look at the replay before quitting and after two or three views realised that whilst I slide wide the guy on the outside also turned into me - more of a racing incident than fully my fault (although I was definitely partly to blame).
I was a spectator at this race and it was just amazing to see how Wyatt and Roland turn something like 15 laps within 1/10 of a second.
Call that consistency.
When I watched what happened to you, here is my view on it.
You clearly passed the other driver inside, you were all the way by and clear when you turned into turn one.
It is your right to go a bit wide, everybody does.
The other driver braked too late and his front wheel got to the hight of your rear wheel and then he turned in.
This is clearly his fault, late braking and misjudging the distance to the car in front when turning in.
There was nothing you could have done different.
When it spun your car around and you got hit broadside, I said OHH NOOO :crying:
Other than that, there was one driver playing rusian roulette by driving a totally damaged car around the track at 20-40 mph.

From your lap time potential shown in the Q session, I'd suggest you base the estimate of how well you'd have done not on what other drivers had problems, but where your driving would have put you based on lap times in a clean car.
Forgetting "what happened to others in the race", with your up front starting position, I'd estimate you'd have easily been able to stay ahead of most behind you after T1 and probably would have driven to 4th or 5th, depending on how Williams, Damron, and you sorted out the last 10 laps. The Lap Graph suggests pretty much that.

Cheers guy's. Don't know what it is about Watkins but I love it there. I think the banked turns help your speed. Anyway on to Barber a track I've only turned a few laps at and my best is a 1.21.1 in the SM so much still to learn. I need to find about 2 secs to be okay I think.

With a bit of help from Dion Polk, I cut 3.5 tenths off my old PB, I am really liking Barber now;

It can be hard in my timezone to get races in the F1 so unless it picks up next season (and with the new pro qualifying rules it might) I'll run the Star Mazda again.
Actually I might run it as a 3rd series considering the V8 only has races on Mondays.

That's good, my brain couldn't cope with three Series in one week so I'll be SM again and probably for a while.

I find going between the F1 and V8 is a huge challenge every week, but when the Intel series was on a couple of months back I switched from the F1 to the SM and in a matter of minutes felt at home. I don't think I'll ever feel that way in the V8.

Well I went a bit quicker tonight;

but then had a poor race, managed to spin all on my own;

still the drop in iR might put me in second split tomorrow night :-P

I seem to have some really good luck at Barber. I have no idea why as the place is a nightmare. :)
I have managed two races this week. I got a 3rd and a 2nd. Both were fairly low SOF's though.

Okay so I did a better Qualifying;

and then had a reasonably comfortable run to 6th in the Top Split race;

With only a few hours to go I'm 18th in Division 3, so quite happy about that.
Not so sure about my Season total points though 666 :laugh:

Slightly disappointed with my season, had a real bad patch of races late in the season.
Ended up 13th in Div 2 on 840 pts.

I only did 4 tracks this season in the mazda, started mid season just to try the mazda and it stuck, did 361 pts, for a newbie in the mazda i think is not that bad. Finished 3rd in last race with very nice fights, starting the get better now.

I tried the Star Mazda at Road Atlanta today... what a blast!! I totally love the car. It's quite easy to drive it safely (1.20,1.21) but if you want to go faster it's not easy any more.
Could any of you guys running the series post your setups? Allan has a really nice time, and Readover is really close to aliens, so I'd like to try different setups and see which of them suits me better. I've got a really nice one, specially for race (very very stable, easy do some 19s). My PB is a 18.9 now, but I feel I could get a bit more with a different setup.
Thanks a lot.

Mikel, I will send you my setup later when I'm on that computer :) I have done 1'17,6 with it.
Yeah I want to be in the world cup!! It's pretty bad the way it works now.. As for better drivers, I think Scandinavia has some/many of the best drivers and we still aren't in the world cup.. As I posted in the iRacing forum we have superior stas, but less points.. =/ Maybe because the multiplier or the fact that we doesn't race as much.. something isn't quite right at least

England arn't in the world cup either. That's after an announcment to say that we were :(
Many guys bought the cars and tracks needed to compete.
But to Iracings credit they apologise and offered to refund any purchases and hosted sessions paid for specificly for this. (content gets to be kept too) On the back of it there's now and England 'World series' event organised with the same car/track combos.
Got to hand it to both Iracing for good customer service after they made a mistake, and the guys that run club England.
Multiplier is pants though......

The car is probably a couple of tenths faster on average on all tracks now it seems like :) People also saying it's easier to drive, but I don't know.. For me it's the same, except better grip and more speed :P

27 January 11, 08:45
Might be.. A little.. But the curbs on Silverstone were pretty kind before too I think.. But haven't tested that much yet. But according to people there is a big difference! :P Probably a little placebo as well but there is a difference no doubt.

I've got little experience on the SM, but I feel the car is easier to drive through bumps. Some oversteer I was suffering with a setup seems to be minimaized as well.
As for the times, I beat my PB yesterday, but I don't really think the build had much to do with it (maybe 1/10th or two), as I'm still learning how to drive the car.
I still have to master 2n turn and the left hander after the Ss, where I'm loosing on average 2 or 3 tenths. Anyway, I'd be glad if I can get close to my PB in qualifying (1.18.4xx).
P.D.: Readover, I still haven't tried your setup properly, but as I don't have much time to prepare for the first races, I may put it off to next season. Quite oversteery setup anyway :-P

27 January 11, 11:44
Haha yeah I figured you'd think they where Mikel xD
But yeah those two turns you're talking about are really hard! Finding the apex consistently in what actually is turn 3 :P That right hander, is really hard! And to not fly over the curb and spin xD
And then t5 or whatever it is, is also really hard!

Multiplier is gone starting in Season 1.
Clubs will get lumped into 8 divisions by points. Thus, the top 5 clubs in points will be division 1 and so on until the bottom clubs in division 8.
Should make for closer club competition and no more multiplier.

I used to hate Road Atlanta in an open wheeler but I did about 25 laps today and beat my pb by a tenth (while botching the middle sector by .3) and had a blast. I can almost smell a 17 around here. Catching slides is a a lot easier, it can run on the kerbs and is just generally more fun. The low grip from cold tyres is really noticable after driving the F1 this season, once you feel the heat and pressures rise the thing grips really well.

I had a mix of feelings yesterday in the Runoffs. I wasn't used to manual clutch, so I had never done a race before not using auto-clutch. In the first race (single split) I completely ruined five peoples race as I tried to engage 1st gear without pressing the clutch (I didn't know you couldn't set 1st gear before the starting lights appear, so I tried the same I did while using auto-clutch). Anyway, I felt totally ashamed and tried to make my best in the second race.
This time, there where two splits and due to my poor iRating I was in the lower one (1300+ SoF). After the mess I caused I just didn't want to start near the front and... well, I was on pole :glare: Hopefully I did a great start this time and despite spinning in the first corner where I loose around 10 seconds, I was able to win confortably (I was running mid-high 19s and I should be able to do low 19s and some high 18s).

I'm just loving the SM as well as Road Atlanta, once you know the tricky points on the track you start to enjoy it.
