I noticed something in the rearview while running Concord in the Late Model.

Coming out of a couple of turns, it looks like smoke from the tires. Looks like puff, puff, puff, puff. I don't see anything like exhaust flame on the replays.

What's causing it and what's the best solution?

I'm guessing it's tire smoke. You're probably sliding the tires through the turn and burning up the right rear.

I too have noticed this sometimes.

Have you ever seen it coming from another car during a race?

I've only ever seen tire smoke from a car that's spinning out.

Yet, a couple of my cars have shown that smoke in the mirrors since I first started driving them. Amazingly, I've worked up a setup for my Late Model at South Boston that will keep the tires on the sucker till the end of the 65 lap races, and I'm seeing the smoke when doing that. You'd think the smoke would cause tire wear. Heck, maybe I've got an awesome setup and could go even faster if I could steer it more gingerly. :)

Finally stumbled into an answer on the iRacing forums. Someone had asked the same question and actually got an answer.

The smoke apparently happens from gross understeer. Guess I'm seriously overdriving the car. Since I've never seen anything like that happen in real life, I just never considered that iRacing would do such a thing.

Makes sense. I recall seeing smoke from time to time when I have been new to an oval car and pushed it all the way :D
