Had an excellent nostalgia trip, Couldn't find my GT2 tho *bummer*.
Watching the intro to GT1 brought back the awe I felt as I watched that intro, excellent intro music too (Go Manics). Couldn't adjust to the controls though, heheh careered off into walls almost as much as I hit apexs! GT3.....Sublime game IMO, when I think PD hit their zenith with focused content and not too much fluff in the way, another excellent Intro and good intro music. Go Feeder, Welsh connection :) Fired up GT4 and enjoyed that too (crappy intro music tho), did many a lap of Seattle. But I could see the graphic advancement of GT5 all the more clearly by replaying the older stuff. I just wosh they'd done a bit more with some of the tracks.

Yeah, some of the tracks certainly didn't recieve the attention that De Lesarthe and Nordshliefe did, but I'm happy we got what we got.
Don't know if they will ever include DLC tracks, but would love some real world tracks, like Spa, VIR, Mid America, Lime Rock park (excellent and challenging track)
The graphics of GT5 are a giant leap and make me excited about the future, I've seen a small preview of the graphics for Forza f4, and I would say the graphics are insane. Competition is good! If they fix the non removeable physics assits, I might take a look at purchasing that.
At some point, when everything looks like real life, how will they ever improve graphics again :-P

One graphics peak, at real lifeness, they should add the abilty to actually press buttons in the cars in game, like use the launch control in a F458, or cycle though the display screens, in a nissan gTR, ajust the mirrors, the seats, turn on/ traction, stablity and other assists, use the nav to drive from one track to another in a real 100% scale earth, or if your in a BMW M car, sit on the couch for 4 hours playing around in iDrive to get the car ready for the track, use the heater to defrost the windows, turn on the wipers, ajust their speed, put the windows up or down, all the stuff you can do in real life, in the game.

we are going to need a LOT of buttons in the playstation controller then :-P

this will make use of the motion sensor tech, ala Kinect, but will require one that is way more advanced and intuitive. it works like this:
you will need a wheel, pedals, Hshifter/paddles/sequential, depending on the car. The motion device will tracks yuor whole body. so when you place your hands on the wheel, you place hands in the exact same place on the wheel in game. this works for feet/legs too, if you tap dance on the pedals, or wave your arms about in real life, you will do it in game too. this is there the cockpit controls come in. you take your hand off the wheel, move your arm/hand and aim for the button you want and the in game hand will make contact with the soild 3D model of the cockpit and press that button, even though all you are pressing in RL is air. also for example if you wave your arm in the air, where your review mirror is, in game, your hand will make contact with it and it will move or break it off. if you want to press a button on the in game wheel, just press your finger against your wheel in that spot where the button is in game, and it will be pressed in game.
I know it is all sounds really complicated, and is hard to explain, but i can see something like this someday.

one problem with that.....absolutely no physical sensations of driving a car...i.e. ffb etc. Kinnect is a good idea, but there's so much more than that to the experience of driving a car. Now all that kinnect stuff combined with a suit that somehow exerts pressure on parts of your body to "fool" you into thinking that you are experiecing forces acting on your body. I am fully aware that the "suit" tech I write about is pure Sci Fi.

there will still be FFB, because you are in physical contact with your real wheel. the motion sensor just picks this up, and when you put your hands on your real wheel, your in game driver will do the same.

Ah I see what you mean, I presumed you'd be sat in front of the tv waving your hands about! The only issue I can see with that is the distance from the sensor you'd have to be. I would think that it would have to have a minimum distance where it would work and that would probably mean putting the wheel further back from the tv. If all the technical pitfalls were resolved then it would be excellent (and at least more likely to happen than my dream above!).

There was some great music in GT3. Whenever I hear classic Feeder tracks like Just a Day or Buck Rogers I am always reminded of great times playing GT3. Also Aisha by Death in Vegas was another great track from this game.
The sound effects in this game were just fantastic as well, the "back" sound in menus especially.:-P
What with the Standard vs Premium debacle and the total lack of decent tracks, GT5 is just a pale shadow of the series former glories. Maybe that's just the nostalgia kicking in........but.......no it isn't.

No no your right mate, spot on..
Im loving gt5 now..But GT3 was borderline obsession...GT4 to a lesser extent..
Maybe us ol' dogs are just a little jaded now, we all now how long the wait, and i for one was expecting my tv and g25, to literally take of fly through the wall and smoke it down the road with me hanging on for dear life...
Ive actually just bought another copy of GT3 for a few nicker of fleabay, as couldn't find mine..
I needed to have it..:-D
But yeah they got it spot on with 3..went for bigger and better on 4, and just well 5 is 5 ....
Must say though ive just beat all the rallying on the specials..and for the first time ever i loved it..the snow stages were epic...

Snow effects are really cool but I find the FFB on gravel stages much too heavy. I want my wheel to last!!

of the GT games ive played, I enjoyed GT3 the most followed by GT2 then GT4.
The reason GT4 takes 3rd is because although it had the most cars of any GT title before 5, most the tracks from GT3 except for rome circuit, which was one of my favs, and a few others i think, and slightly improved graphics, its the sound track really let it down.
Gt2 and 3 had awesome memorable soundtracks, GT4's just sucked.

Yeah..well a DFP will i still have a dfp and that was created for gt4, and thats ps2.
And freejrs, yeah the gravel were quite brutal on the ff mate for sure, your spot on..
I struggled with the rallying until i turned off the TC, oh my went from hard to a doddle..:?:
And the music..
Firstly, can we not add any to the game via mp3/usb stick..im sure i read it somewhere, (or imagined it).
But there are about 2 songs i like in this game one is queens of the stone age..But they should have put go with flow, instead of the lost art of keeping a secret..
And the other is some remix of off with their heads by the yeah yeah yeahs..
the rest is meh..
Ive got a brand new car.....Its got leather seats......and CD PLAYER....
Never going to beat that...

Its not as "Sci-Fi" as you would think.
I saw a story on a local morning show about a FFB vest.
Geared towards FPS games I think it could be useful for sim racing.
If the sim racer game producers added the support.

Seems most of us prefer GT3......IMO that's the most focused game that PD did. Not too much irrelevant fluff taking up time and resources.

Yeah its a shame the FFB on gravel is so strong.......but the snow feels very good.
I think you can add your own music tracks to GT5 but I dont know how to do it. I turn off music while Im driving anyway but I do quite like some of the menu music. I say some as I had to turn off about 50% of them due them being crap.
QOTSA is always welcome though.
I swear I used to drive better in GT3 when ever the Feeder tracks, especially Buck Rogers, came on during a race.:-P Feeder kick ass.

Definitely GT3 for me. Then GT2, then GT4. GT4 was the only game I played with a steering wheel though. Bought a DFP and then a G25 for it. Infact my G25 has seen service on a serious amount of racing games on many platforms!

Same here mate on everything..GT3 the best..i bought a nissan sunny Gti R on the back of that flippin game, and put a right hole in my pocket at the same time..
And why its not in 4 or 5 ive no idea its as cool as a scoob or evo in my eyes..
And also bought a dfp for gt4...Until i got a g25..that got hammered..GTR2 mostly..
Has anyone seen the new thrustmaster wheel and pedals....*drools*.
hang on..a pic is needed.

Im waiting to hear what Sim Racing Tonight think of the wheel. They should put a full review up at the end of the month. The guys first impressions were very good though.....he said it felt very high quality indeed. It will be interesting to see what it is like on PC sims....and of course if it makes GT5 any better.

i had all GT games but i still don't have GT5 (don't own a PS3 yet).
GT1 was a revolution. a severe kick-in-the-balls. nothing before was that great. the difference for other race games was staggering. it was a timeless milestone and i loved it.
GT2 was an incommensurable jump forward. baseing itself on the already spectacular GT1, it went the extra mile(s) and added more cars than we even thought was possible for a simple console game. Playability, physics and graphics were unmatched in the day. it was truly awe inspiring. all in all, this was probably the GT game that gave me the best vibe of all.
GT3 was an immense improvement graphically and sonically (it was based on the next-gen PlayStation 2) but i couldn't stop feeling disappointment. the game felt somewhat rushed. less than half the cars than GT2 had and the challenges felt much less epic. overall, i felt sad with it, despite its lustre and sense of speed.
GT4, for me, was what GT3 should have been. it added a lot more cars to the game and felt much more like the true spiritual successor of GT2 than GT3 ever did. however, some things were worse here than in GT3, namely the sense of speed. somehow (and for some unfathomable reason) all the cars felt too slow. going 200 km/h felt like going 100. some driving aids could not be turned off and the physics were a little bit arcadish (compared to Enthusia that i had bought also at the same time period). the difference between GT4 and its competitors was not as large as GT1 and GT2 had over their competitors. Forza games appeared. still, this was probably the second GT game i spent most time playing and i unlocked about 85% of its contents until i lost interest. overall, a very good game.
i am looking forward for GT5. must buy the PS3 first, but i'm kinda trying to decide if it's worth it. i don't play games all that much anymore and i'm only interested in GT5. is it worth to buy a whole console (that will be replaced by the PS4 probably before next Christmas) just for one game? what do you guys think?
Supra4
21 January 11, 13:48
Yip, GT3 all the way. The graphics ere more than good enough for their day, the physics engine felt nice, not too much to distract you from the racing itself (although the oil changes and engine wear were often a nightmare if you were competing in databases).
GT4 could have been a major improvement if they had stuck with the prologue physics engine. Instead they turned it into "Gran Turismo : point and shoot edition". GT5 simply hasn't got what it takes to keep me behind the screen for hours.

I bought the PS3 just for GT5 and it is still the only game I have for it. At the moment I have not really got my moneys worth out of it but I think I will start to play it more in the future. Also i plan to buy the Uncharted games after playing the demos.........seriously impressed with both of these games.....blows away anything the xbox has to offer.
PS4 befor enext xmas??? Where did you hear that then?? I highly doubt there will be a PS4 for quite sometime yet.

I don't recall GT4 Prologue as having vastly superior physics over the full game tbh. What exactly was so much better about it??

i'm just guesstimating based on my previous experience with system launches/life-span and in market laws.
Microsoft has already alerted that the X-Box 720, successor of the X-Box 360, is in the final stages of development and will probably be available in mid-2011. that's this year. i don't think sony will let them get away with it very much. they did a bad marketing move to wait so long to release the PS3, which allowed the X-Box 360 to take a fair amount of the market share. my guess is that Sony will not commit the same mistake twice and in a row. they will probably release a slightly more powerful system than the X-Box 720 (to appeal to the number-crazy teens. the ones that go "wow, my console has 400 cores, while yours only has 300" and other bragging rights of that kind) and shortly before a very active consumer period (xmas). that would be good marketing.
plus, the PS2 replaced the original PS in 2000 and was itself replaced, in trun, by the PS3 in 2006. this gives consoles a life-span of approximately 5-6 years (though because of market laws, these figures tend to get shorter and short each console gen). it's 2011... precisely 5 years past 2006.
PS3 hardware has already been beaten by last-gen PC hardware by a significant margin, which will spur controversy with the "X game and Y game look better on the PC than on the PS3" that kids hate so much.
all these factors, cumulatively, will precipitate Sony to release its newest console on a very close future. at least that's what i'm betting on. of course... i might be entirely mistaken.

21 January 11, 15:05
I would bet money that we will not see either a new XBOX or PS in 2011. I could be wrong but I just don't see it.
These "next gen" consoles were intended to have a longer life than thier previous incarnations.

no idea.
GT4 had this weird wheelspin at times where there shouldn't be wheelspin. most people just use TC to avoid it. i think that's mostly the suspensions fault, it's too simple. look how cars drive over curbs in GT4 and then GT5, big improvement just by "simple" 3d movement of suspension parts.
maybe that's why they tried to tweak it, because there's no other workaround. of course with set-up and calm drive it don't have to be an issue but the source of it is still there (in GT4)
