This game has too much turbo whistle, I wonder if it can be tweaked down. The engine sounds are terrific but too much whistle.
Hmm, have seen some of GT cars live and alot of materials in internet and can't say really that it's (the turbo) too loud. Maybe it can be tweaked, but if not you can still take some off the car volume (atleast it's something).
I think you mean the drive-train straight cut gear noise as that vete isn't turbocharged. Yeah it is a little over the top.

Over-exaggerated sound, that's how NFS now a days. Not so surprise and not worry at all since if it really turns out like that then modding community will fix it in no time.

Yeah, drivetrain whine. The loudness of the whine is probably quite appropriate for a FIA GT car or works converted cars. However, realistic or not, it does eventually get on your nerves a bit (and probably on my housemates' nerves). Shift 1 allowed you to decrease all SFX except engine, which works out quite well, however they really should have a volume slider specifically for transmission whine. The turbo becomes too quiet if you decrease all SFX.
second video doesn't seem accurate.
but it's the same with the real turbo sound, as it's so high pitched when fully spooled it's less noticable on a speaker set-up were high frequency sounds are not perfectly sounding.
while the drivetrain is in frequencies any speaker will get or even boost (like small pc speakers or headphones usually got less bass and treble like a giant speaker set)
you know, we should probably tweak it if it's in all mode (it makes sence optional in all cars for better speed perception) either on stock cars no noise, change torque -> drivetrain and so on
but it's hard judging by youtube, some vids the same car there's no audible transmission, on some videos (probably mobile phone recorded :-P ) the transmission is more then twice as loud as the engine, especially with low revving and rumbling v6 or v8 engines.
or it's a tuned car with loud drivetrain but still enough silencing stuff inside the car to degrade the audible engine sound.

As a short-term fix, why not run an equalizer on your PC prior to launching shift and reduce the gain/level on high frequencies? That will attentuate the whistle for you immediately.
or use ear-plugs and helmet.
but you will lose sound brake squeal and turbo spool on turbo enignes ;)
Hey that is a drivetrain, differencial and transmission sound. The Tommy video sounds great the sounds are ok.
I hope the turbo sounds will be better than Shift1 because they were not hearable.

Real life sucks, it's far to loud ;) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmJH84FnQa8

They're loud because they're supposed to be. If you drove a lap in a real GT car you wouldn't complain about NFS games being "exaggerated".
The turbos were inaudible in Shift 1 which is of course not realistic.

So the whining is accurate? Or is it over the top? I know some cars have it, like Porsche 911 GT3 RSR, but I don't hear that in Corvettes.

If you drove a lap in a real GT car you wouldn't complain about NFS games being "exaggerated".
The main issue is when you hear that same sound on a street car that uses conventional helical gears for its transmission.
That shouldn't happen.
Yet it does.
NFS may be blindly treating some "upgrades" on the cars as dogbox updates to the cars. At least it seems to be more pronounced on some cars rather than others (so it's not always overbearing the engine sound on each car, at least from the videos shown so far).
Here's a video of an RX7 which had a dogbox transmission installed:

well it's not the dog box (that's the way how the gears are engaged) but the straight cut gears which whine.

Only high-powered cars had a strong whine in Shift 1 (most of Tier 4 and a few Tier 3 cars). In some cars it was a bit unrealistic, for example the SLR, which should've been similar to the Bugatti Veyron, in which you can't actually hear the whine.
There's whine in street cars (mostly sportscars), it's only less audible because of them being helical gears and because of sound deafening.

If SHIFT 2 had that type of whine I wouldn't have complained. The whine dominates engine sound in that game.

The transmission whine on a race car depends not only by the car model but also the gear ratio setup used. On different tracks, it sounds different. To bad this wont be implemented in the game, or any sim for that instance to this moment. I dont get it and will never accept the fact that every single sim producer has the potential to make extreemly realistic sounding cars but after they get to a point they just ignore it. Why the **** not make them as real as posible if you can. And don't give me that bull you know what about anoying racing sounds couse there is no such thing since every one that loves motorsport adores every single sound a racing car makes. On a side note I am glad to see that Shift 2 has improved sounds.

as real as possible means you had to use 16 or more sound layers and blend them according to rpm, load and maybe other custom parameters.
Shift 1 only supported rpm and load.
current problem imho is more getting more diversity in sounds on race and upgraded cars and less noticable transmission in road cars

True about the sound layers but they could do it like I said, after all they all claim to do this out of an imense passion for cars and motorsport. I know I would if I was the head of a car based game making company. It's not like with the handling phsihics where it's allways a compromise, plus I can prety much guarantee it would pay of not only proud and satisfaction wise but financialy too. I mean who wouldn't wanna buy the car game with the most realistic sounds ever made.;-) Ofcourse I don't mean specificaly for Shift I speak in general.:-)

I didn't think engine sounds were terrible in Shift 1, quite nice actually (but then again, the only racing game I've played recently is Mario Kart!). Maybe things here and there to adjust but they didnt' suck.
With Shift1 quality sound, I would rather a game developer spend time on physics, AI, UI, graphics rather than more R&D on sound. How good could it ever sound coming out of my 2.1 speaker sytem?? At a certain point our eyes cannot distinguish more detail than 1080p can offer. Can human ears pick out 16 layers of sound?

Ofcourse they can, we defenetely notice a huge difference betwin a real onboard clip and an ingame onboard one. Like I said with the graphics it's a compromise because not everyone affords a nuclear plant, with the physics it's a compromise couse the majority of gamers are not obsessed by extreeme realism, "realife but on a pc" from which I suffer :P or own a G25, but with the sound I don't see why it should be a compromise. Not everyone owns an extreeme pc config, not everyone likes etreeme realism but everyone loves as real as possible sounds. Any way I am obsessed with sounds too:laugh: so I will stop here since I'm going off topic anyway. Shift sounds were not that bad like you said, but I was talking about car games in general.
I forgot to mention that from the videos I saw I will be prety pleased with the engine sounds in Shift 2

It maybe realistic but I think they recorded it just a bit too loud. Can't they not making it sound like crushing your ear with the gearbox and exhaust?
There's no point to moan anyway because we'll find out in just a few days.
I've just finish watching their launcher trailer and gotta say I'm really impressed about the sound in this one.
