View Full Version : The Shift 2 issues, bugs and solutions thread (PC version)
"Found a massive issue with the game. Absolutely breaks the experience for me, honestly.
The photographers in the audience use telephoto-zoom lenses when taking close-ups after a race. A 35-85mm prime lens would be more suitable, and much more sharp, for taking photographs at such a range. Also, when they're in the distance, they're not even using pods to stabilize; they must have some monstrous arm strength to keep a 8lbs lens with a 7lbs camera steady."
And here is another gripe.
The gridgirls have knickers from Mark & Spencer when everybody knows they usually wearing Calvin Klein's.
Totaly unrealistic!
;-P
In a nutshell, no game is realistic because too much reality is left out. The only thing worth talking about is whether car behaviour is believable :)
Looking at Shift 2, the physics model is more advanced than anything else out there that it can be classified a sim for sure. The default set-ups are keeping a lot of that under the carpet, though, but some tuning (yes, tuning, which arcade racer has that? ;)) will bring out all the good stuff.
Furthermore, since we've been playing ISI-based sims for so long, anything that behaves differently is declared to be arcade. Time to take off the blinders I say.
Don't most "realistic" style arcade games have tuning options now? Forza, NFS Shift, GT5,F1 2010, and so on? And you really think Shift 2 has the most advanced physics model? I'd find that hard to believe with games like GT5 which I'm pretty sure had more thought put into as it was developed over a HUGE amount of time.
At this point I'm on the fence about Shift 2, while I like it in some ways others I just hate it. And frankly it doesn't feel realistic at all! I'd say it's closer then a lot of other titles I've driven, but I don't think it's right still.
I haven't played many of the big sim titles yet, mostly because I just got a wheel not that long ago and JUST finished my CST pedals last week. This weekend I'll start work on my cockpit and after that I plan to really start playing some of the big sim titles, starting with GTR2 for the school, and a bit of rFactor, but mostly looking forward to trying out iRacing.
Really though... I still can't find settings suitable for universal driving. What I'm at now is great for 4WD cars, but horrible for anything else, and drifting is broken for everything. RWD cars spin out as soon as throttle is at 60% or more and the wheel is turned 10 degrees or more. FWDs get massive fishtailing with the slightest turn+throttle... I literally have to throttle at 2% or so just to get past small turns in the Maserati GTS (one of my favourite cars to drive in Shift 1).
it's the suspension.
imagine a FWD car, of course the car tries to follow the powered wheels.
maybe someone knows what to change in set-up suspension alignment. (like more negative toe, but i'm no expert on FWD cars :( )

well, you also have to define realism. the above example is perfectly recreatable on a real FWD car, however most cars stock won't show that behaviour much.

nope, it didn't had more time in development for the physics model(s).
what GT5 does right on many cars is they drive as people expect them to drive and imho that is a good thing

They're stable and do exactly what you told them to do, even when you push them hard.
Are real cars stable and doing exactly what you tell them to do when you push them close to the limit? Not as far as I know...
All these games have major flaws in their physics. The budget required to get it right is just not worth it because very few people will even notice that effort :-(
The problem is that most of us armchair race drivers know zip about how real race cars or tuned road cars or just about any car should behave in race conditions  That makes all discussion of what's realistic and what's not a rather questionable excercise...

How did this game ever make it through testing without anyone noticing any of the bugs and what have you that has so far been see, recorded, pictures of it/them taken and by other means lmao, and yes most of these bugs i've seen and read about are happening to most people from even starting the game for the first time.
SMS had real drivers in to test and give their feed back on the handling of most cars an what not, so how did the lack of handling get over looked/ignored on any of the platforms. Makes for a good question or does it lol.
Not too sure if this happened to anyone on here yet but anyway, in tunning on the track and comes to the screen showing any lap times done, it gives the options to either get a friend to beat your time (in other words), play again, view replay and any others and if choosing to exit back to the garage menu it wont as its loopin on that screen (could say it freezes on it). Only way around it is to either not do it or exit the game.
The AI will vary with everyone as well with what ever car is being used. With me they're totally random meaning they'll not hit me and let me pass no probs, wont let me pass but keeping away or the'll just hit the living day lights out of my car lol.
-
In quick race, i've noticed one track with no picture being shown (pics included too, 1st being missing and the 2nd being what it is).
-
Cant recall the track this happened on but from the recorded reply i did of it, it looked as though there was an invisible wall or something. Will try to get a video up of it to better explain it lmao.

Reading or rounding accuracy? :)
corvette gt1 display is probably fixable with higher seat position (per car setting somewhere in the .cd_ files or the default cockpit cam.
but how are people supposed to drive the Ford GT1? if the interior camera rear view wouldn't shake anything would be perfect (of course with triple screen you can see the left mirror all time but that's no option for me)

Its a reading from shown program in the pic and not the only program stating it either. The card is an XFX 9600 GT XXX Alpha Dog Edition by the way.

Someone had said that the best line on one of the tracks would show and then not show and around the track, well the same happens for Road America too (caught on cam/video lmao).
SMS better get their heads out of EA's A hole, or each others A hole for that matter, and get this game sorted out.
To be honest, any game that has EA on it of late hasnt been top notch as most would expect from them, if anythin it's dropped below standards and the only game i can think of that still has EA logo on it that's above standards imo is the sims lol.
Anyone else have the problem of lights appearing on the edges of the screen when AA is forced via inspector. See the screen below (green light on the left). These lights appear in various colors and they flickr and move along the edge. Pretty disturbing.
Didn't we had the same glitch in Shift 1?

Testing in window mode at 1280 x 800 where i'm able to see gpu/cpu usage, the game it self only use's one core out of 4! (x4 955be) and runs at 20-25 fps, with 2 core's it gets alot less laggy/stuttery at 50-60 fps and with 3 core's goes up to around 80-85 fps at most, with 4 core's there isnt really any improvement from what i can see.
There you have it, if you feel it's a port your right to say/think that. Why on gods green earth would SMS only want the game to use one cherry core!

The walls are like magnets by the way which is what those who have said regarding them, soon as you touch or hit them it would be like you cant get off and away from them as easy, much like when bumping the AI car's as well.

Problem: Distant textures look ugly, as if texture filter isn't doing it's job well even with AF set to 16 in-game.
Solution: Force 16x AF in graphics drivers.
Can't believe I only figured that out today. Game looks much better. Still need to somehow squeeze out enough performance for AA though.
I'm using an HD 4870 with 11.3 drivers. Problem may not apply to everyone.

I had thought that SMS would have had code in the game to use all core's a pc system had but doesnt seem so from what i'm sein. In this day and age who would ever run a game like this on a plain cpu, wouldnt get all that much from it.
Sad to see a game keeping the trend of only using one core.

Just start at Suzuka West and pay attention to the white line at the edge of the road.
Before AF it will go blurry as it goes into the distance. After you force 16x AF, it will be perfect and the overall image will look sharper.
AF prevents textures going blurry when the surface is viewed at an angle.

Nvidia User's, if you feel like trying to force AF in nvidia control panal and off in the game you may have a small boost in fps! It may or may not work for everyone but worth a try in the end.
It's like the game bogs somewhat down with it's built in AF lol. I'm forcing 16x AF :D
edubz123, i'm guessing here but you may even have a small boost in fps but then again i wouldnt know as your using an ATI card, worth a shot none the less i say.
If, while AA in game is messed up to hell, AF is like AA then SMS suck at making things work in a game lmao

I noticed the white lines on the track edge going blurry with my HD4870 and in game 16x AF, I'll try forcing control panel, thanks.
AA will not force from control panel though, I get black cars and objects if I do so I run AA off for now, as in game AA causes stutter even at high frame rates and looks poor anyway.

OK, i forced 16x AF from Catalyst (and unchecked 'allow application to control' for this effect) and I think it made a difference. Previously I was getting some weird, boxy fuzzy grass textures at Silverstone although I had textures set to high. Now the grass is smooth and clear as far as I can see and there was no FPS hit (still in the 40-60 range).
Other ATi users should also try yanking away AF control from Shift and forcing through Catalyst. (Although I still have 16x AF set in Shift2's video menu as before.)

He should have said you dont get full amount back if car has been works converted, would have been much better.
No you dont get a full refund from a works converted car, just everything else before it. My guess is that due to shift 1 refunding 100% back from a works converted car, which was imo unbalanced, so it was changed somewhat to help balance it out.

It's the one you win in the Modern A invitational. I managed to win it, I got lucky thanks to some AI driver causing a crash.
On the first Works career event at that Spanish (?) track my engine blew on lap 2.
If you don't rev it too hard I guess it should be ok. I saw on the EA forum that people using automatic transmission were unable to even win its invitational race without the engine blowing.

rFactor has an option (or trick) to get all cores working by simply editing the desktop shortcut to launch the game to include "-fullproc" at the end of the .exe. Anyone try this yet on Unleashed to see if it makes a difference?
If you are using RadeonPro then you can force it with that
Hey All,
My Shift 2 looked so ugly I didn't want to play it, textures looked like on Commodore 64. I was certain it's issue with Level of Details aka LOD. Turned out that AF as suggested here fixed textures problem. BIG THANKS!
Only thing is that the game works like a dog with all settings set to high and AFx16. I wonder if I upgraded Q6600@3.6GHZ and 5870 to something better it be smooth.

yeah, I take back my report from this morning. 16x AF got my FPS down in the 30s occasionally which sucked (but still mostly in the 40-60 range). Perhaps we don't really need 16x AF? Maybe even 8x or 4x would be good enough without suffering the FPS penalty.
Play with the levels and see if you get a good balance of image quality and performance. I'm gonna test more tonight too.
(EDIT: BTW, I was driving @ Silverstone Bridge GP with 11 opponents. HIGH textures and 16x AF forced through Catalyst.)
I've always maxxed out AF in games regardless of other settings, because I wasn't aware it was a big performance killer...
Where I noticed the AF needed to be cranked up more from where I was running it (2x) was on the spectators faces - on lower settings they were fuzzy, creepy looking even - reminded me of the effect they used on the faces in "The Ring." Anyway, setting it at 8x cured that with nearly no loss of frames.

Agree, forcing AF via catalyst helped with grass, trees, spectators very much. I couldn't believe I thought AF 16x was "on" this whole time. I was really disappointed in the game graphically until last night.
But what about the damn pop-in behavior? It's really bothersome although hasn't caused any accidents yet. Why is rendering of bridges, spectators, etc. delayed so much while driving? Is there any remedy for that?

To make up for the FPS hit of forcing AF to 16x, I dropped shadow and car detail to medium. Can't even see the difference the car detail setting makes, probably to do with distant LODs. Medium shadows don't really look any worse either but give a decent performance boost.
Pretty happy with it now, the game looks great once I forced AF in the drivers.
Only miss AA now.
There will be performance hit but you can still set MSAA 2x forced in via ATI control panel and have the edges bit smoother while game is still playable.

I noticed the same thing with the car detail, have no idea where the different settings come into play, certainly not in the garage - the cars look identical there regardless of setting detail to low, med or high. I can't tell any difference in the game for that matter, lol...maybe like you say, a LOD thing, or perhaps in/after damaging. I've got mine at med as well. Got my shadows at low because that is a nice boost from high and from what I can see, the cast shadows from the cars stay unchanged at low, and that's all I care about with them - doesn't bother me that the random banner hanging across the track or whatever no longer casts a shadow...gimmie the frames! Framerate is life.

I've uploaded some comparison pictures for those who may still be unsure about difference in texture quality between default AF and forced AF. They are 1920x1200, you'll need to maximise to full size for a true comparison. The forced AF provides much sharper textures, this is most noticeable in these pics on the track surface - even from as close as a few metres to the left of the car, but especially into the distance. There was no fps impact with my 6970.

I now doubt if ingame AF works at all, I've got it set to trilinear in game now that CCC is doing its stuff.

Whenever I quit a race, I go to the menu and choose another race, it ends with a game crash (speaking of quick race). I also get some ocasional crashes during career mode. The game's running fine, everything is up to date (directx, physx, video driver, so on).

Got a call from a mate tonight who has picked this up and hes telling me the game is only using 2 cores fully of his q6600 (overclocked to 3ghz) and in doing so is limiting his
Geforce 470 to around 50 fps on average at 1900x1200 with everything on max
(aa off in game)
His 470 is averaging between 50% to 70% usage (cpu bottleneck)
His cpu is averaging 50% to 65% on average (lack of cpu usage causing the bottleneck above)
depending on track
This would suggest that this could be an issue anyone with a quad as it will require high clocks to make use of high end cards. From that era anyway, more modern quads should in theory be able to process more even only making use of 2 cores
Anyone on a dual core will also need high clocks or they are wasting their time with a modern card at least in this game
It also suggests that if the game was able to use a quad properly that most would be seeing a average of 60 fps on lower spec cards and well over a 100 on higher spec cards
if the cpu and card were being used to their fullest capabilities
For anyone that has a second screen that they can hook up to their system it would be nice if we could confirm this or not. Earliest i can do it is friday
@Beaverz no harm in you checking as you seem to be suffering low frame rates
Forgot
He is checking stats with apps below
Fraps for fps
MSI Afterburner for GPU usage
Task Manager for CPU usage
afterburner and task manager are running on second screen so hes seeing it all in real time
He also agrees that mid engine cars are all over the place at high speed.
Its not an issue with quads actually. I have a q6600@3.6ghz. Almost all four cores get used 75% avg on my system. You have to take into account monitor resolution and game settings. Anything under 1680x1050 will be a cpu bottleneck. Lower res does not stress the card more and the game becomes more cpu dependent. So faster cpu speed helps out in this case. Even his quad is 3gh is actually a cpu bottleneck for a gtx 470 in most games. I had a 23inch hdtv i used @ 1920x1080 before i traded.
Shift 1 I got avg 35fps max settings 1920x1080 with around 45% cpu usuage, 99% gpu usage. monitor change, same settings, 80% cpu usage, with 45 fps, but only 85% gpu avg usuage.
And last, even if the game was as perfect with quad core usuage, your fps is not gonna sky rocket. Its makes the game very very GPU heavy. Which is great. The game wont be as picky about cpu speed as core count then. I easily lose 10fps going from 3.6 down to 3.0 in shift 2.
Shift 2 runs pretty good for me. I have the in game aa turned off, Using amd morphilogical filter, cfaa 4xx with 6x filter and multisamlping. All in game settings hightest. avg 30fps. My vid card is the bottleneck for my system. Im bout to get me a HD 6950 and flash it.
As far as the input lag goes, it was horrible before adding the mod to fix it. Now it actually does feel pretty damn good. Im loving the game more then the first. The first needed alot of tweaking too. I agree we shouldnt have to do this in the first place, but hey at least we get too make the game how we want it too be for the most part. Modding shift 1 made the game pretty damn awesome.

Solutions:
1) Force AF to 16x through the gfx card driver
Should it be set to 16 in game also?
Should it be set to 16 in game also?
It looks like the in-game setting doesn't work at all, so it probably doesn't matter what you set in the game :) Just for fun you could try and see if it makes any difference in performance :)

Yes, force through driver. I am using 8x as it provides almost as good quality as 16x but my performance is better than 16x
Same here. I haven't really found a pattern in it yet, but I have had a few crashes in Quick Races.
I noticed it happens every single time I quit a race and start another one on the same track, even if it's not the same race type. As an example, I race on Nordschleife, I quit the race, I go to tuning and when I want to test the tuning settings on Nordschleife, it crashes.
I guess it has something to do with the tracks stuck into the memory or the access to them getting locked after the first race, I don't know. That's all I can think of regarding this issue, no expert thoughts here.
virtual mirror works in all cars and view by editing the cameraconfig.xml (set HUD-type something)
Forcing AF from CCC control panel works for me, the white lines on the track edge no longer suddenly change into a blur halfway down the track, looks much crisper and clear now in the distance.
I now doubt if ingame AF works at all, I've got it set to trilinear in game now that CCC is doing its stuff.
uhm your doubt might be right but you have to watch more tracks and especially the cars.
usually you set some objects/shaders to zero AF so ingame AF don't apply to them. like cones and other objects or the panorama background (as you rarely see it from different angles ;) )
of course it's hard to spot which ones these are. surface should be the first to apply AF though.
virtual mirror works in all cars and view by editing the cameraconfig.xml (set HUD-type something)
Where can the cameraconfig.xml be found? I'd like a virtual mirror in cockpit as I can't see the mirrors on many cars, on a 4:3 screen. Why can't this option be in the game anyway?
To make up for the FPS hit of forcing AF to 16x, I dropped shadow and car detail to medium. Can't even see the difference the car detail setting makes, probably to do with distant LODs. Medium shadows don't really look any worse either but give a decent performance boost.
Pretty happy with it now, the game looks great once I forced AF in the drivers.
Only miss AA now.
I can't see the difference between high and low reflections either, another setting to turn down for a few more frames :-D

Anyone had a race where the AI drive's into the wall rather than on the track/road? lmao
Not sure if its a bug/glitch or what but here's a quick video in slow-mo lol

ah, ok. I "sensed" a difference last night with my 5770 ATi when forced through the driver. Could be placebo effect, I didn't take screenshots or measure FPS scientifically.
I think everyone should try both anyway and choose for themselves, it only takes 10 minutes.
Yep, I agree. I think part of it is that we have a lot of people here who are (probably) used to playing Shift 1 with all of the great mods installed, and we've become a bit spoiled. I certainly feel that way, I mean for Shift 1 I have Shift HD/Better Visuals/Chevy's Tire/Wheel/Forza mods and that game looks AMAZING. I mean I literally spent 5 minutes last night just staring at the '66 Ford GT40 spin in the garage menu. I'm not exaggerating.
And in Shift 2 while I definitely think it looks good, when I go back to Shift 1 with all of those mods.....I'm just blown away. If Shift 1 had as many cars as 2 and night racing, I would not even consider playing 2. So at this point I just hope someone figures out how to mod 2 in the same way that 1 was.

Anyone figure out how to get a gated shifter to work in Shift without the horrible delay? I can shift pretty smoothy with manual clutch in every sim/game, but I can't in Shift 2.
I'm using a Fanatec 911 Turbo S wheel and Clubsport Pedals.
Using a Logitech G27, I've noticed this delay too. Also the jerky shifting animation in annoying because the driver first shift into neutral and then into the gear you shift to.
I found it helps with the delay when you upgrade your car with the drivetrain upgrades (clutch and transmission), which makes sense anyway.

Surprised that some of you couldn't see the difference in my AF pics, for me the difference in the road texture is quite clear.
mroussev, the AF pics you posted are very interesting - the default AFx16 does appear to be working on the track surface (unlike on my system). However, notice how the forced AF is also applied to the windows of the buildings, and is definitley still my preference in terms of overall picture quality.

9 April 11, 02:08
I can see the difference quite clearly, matt.
When you're trying to discern differences between images, open them all in different tabs. Then, scroll through the tabs with Ctrl+Page Up/Down. This way, the images are stationary relative to each other and the transition is instantaneous (or rather, as instant as it gets).
I can see it pretty easily, AF affects tessellation so that's probably why the road texture looks better with higher AF. Amongst other things of course :)

There's no tessellation in this game. This game uses DX9.

He probably meant to refer to the simulated tessellation of certain texture maps. AF does in fact aid in that.

AF is angle dependent. so you won't notice anything on textures that are facing the camera.

****. This game is a damn mess, if we're talking about bugs.. and EA/SMS is not doing anything about it.
As for my problem: There's just no way to play a private match now, we played two races with a friend and now, when you send an autolog invitation, it will pop up on the bottom of the screen, but there's just no "join" option in the autolog->friends->friendname->[enter]. We tried everything.. and actually, I think it's the same problem as this guy has http://forum.ea.com/eaforum/posts/list/5561323.page. This is the most ****ed up one, but there are quite literally dozens of bugs. :(

7 days? Hardly. Apr 1 (12 days ago) - that was the release/activation date in my region. Note that the US release date was 29th of March. THAT'S TWO WEEKS. They could have 2 hotfix patches out by now, if they'd care (I'm talking about EA).

Well, it's been out for 12 days, a lot of these issues could be fixed in a small quick patch, and what about all the beta testing? I mean it's not like these are all small issues? Some of them are huge and rather apparent. Maybe they should of taken more time to beta test? Sure seems like they missed A LOT.

1.)
All the below is when using Advanced Tuning.
I just tried this again to confirm, I loaded the game selected a stock Acura NSX and exited the game, reloaded and went to tuning, only steering lock and tyre pressures are adjustable which is correct. I then changed car to a Porsche 911 GT3 race car, went to tuning and still only had adjustable tyre pressures and steering lock, everything else was missing/greyed out even after loading a previously saved setup. I then went to "test" once on track, pushed Esc and into Tuning where I had fully adjustable everything which is correct. I then exited the test session and returned to Tuning in the garage section, clicked edit to see my tuning settings and now everthing is fully adjustable and correct.
But....I then went to garage and selected the stock Acura NSX, went into tuning and had all the tuning adjustments availabe to me that the Porsche 911 GT3 Race car had e.g downforce, springs, gear ratios etc. Again loading a saved setup I still had full tuning options, and settings for options I shouldn't have such as gear ratios, downforce, suspension etc appeared to have the same values as the previously loaded Porsche 911 GT3 race car. If these setting are not possible in the stock car (Acura NSX) then are they still active? I'm guessing no.
So there appears to be some bug when the game switches between cars with limited tuning and those with full adjustment options, going into a test session or exiting and reloading the game with a stock or race car selected appears to reset the setup type. Obviously this is far from ideal.
There are also some stock supercars not upgraded like the Porsche 911 GT2, Mclaren SLR Merc that have more adjustments than the Acura NSX but not as many as a Race car, I'm not quite sure what happens switching between those but the same issue is likely.
This issue also causes problems with some cars when adding upgrades, where you can buy parts that allow full adjustment yet when going into tuning there is no option to adjust.
2.)
The GUI in tuning section on the slider bars is often in the full left position despite being set in the middle or to the right and showing these values. Hovering the mouse over the slider bar causes it to reset to the correct position.
3.)
Selecting a car from the garage doesn't always load the default or last previously saved setup, the setup settings from the previously selected car are often still active, so setups have to be manually loaded. Possibly related to issue 1.).

Mentioning the bugs I've experienced:
- On any race where you have a rolling start, you will lose FBB, unless you pause and unpause the game once the game has given you back control. (G25)
- Using a GTX460, sometimes the game will not register as an intense 3D application, and mid-game the videocard will downclock itself as if running a none intense application.
- Windows 7 SP1 x64 made the game unplayable for me, would crash at launch. Reverting SP1 fixed this.
- The Luffield corner of Silverstone GP (Corner 16) has skid and dirt marks that are above the track level, they are floating about a foot above the track.
- z4 2010 driver shift with thumbs
- some works cars are too easy in rev limiter _sound_
- there's no sign which car is selected before going to tuning, upgrades, career and so on (yeah it's minor issue which doesn't hurt, still bugging me) - in S1 you always saw your last selected car immediatley
- no dawn (morning - early midday) weather preset in any track (again, like S1 had) , it would look cool imho

Essentially what happens is I can get through all the dialog options, the game even behaves as if I'm placing the vinyl - it is just invisible.

why would anyone care what mouse and keyboard you have? There are plenty of people including myself who have perfectly good pcs but are experiencing issues with performance. Turning the detail down does NOT help. Get over yourself, seems like you're just waving your epeen around.

Anyone else have this happen yet?
When watching a replay right after a race, about half way through (random), the replay just stops and goes to a solid black screen.
There is no way to get back once this happens as only the save to youtube and photo mode buttons work. All other buttons have no effect. Thus i had to kill it via task manager.

~56s ~1.24 (this happens in random places throughout whole race). Anyone else seen that? I am using NV 270.61 drivers.
It's a rendering bug when I have AFx16 set in game and Shadows set to Low. This happens. Trees do not get rendered properly and have white flickering, etc.
Remember it does not happen when Anizo is disabled...

Hi,
No issue for me, except i can't play shift2 in TH mode (5260x1200), because there's to much lag with the steering wheel.
But I'm wondering if there is any way to increase the replay's time, especialy for race versus clock ?
Thx

Using a GTX460, sometimes the game will not register as an intense 3D application, and mid-game the videocard will downclock itself as if running a none intense application.
Things like this are not BUGS my GTX460s work perfect.
Maybe a few people should think about going below the recommended desktop resolution. ;)
Pretty basic make the best of it JUST DRIVE IT and enjoy it.
I dont get so many people complaining about fixes for a game that apparently stinks. lol
If it sucks simple, just do not run it till it is fixed.
Drive something runs really well you also like and waste less time worrying.
Life is too short.
Personally I dont care there is never a patch for it. ;) It is arcade fill in fun time. I like Shift more then anything simply because it has chevys Muscle Cars in it.
All the fixes addons patches and tweaks really improved nothing just made more conflicts if anything.
Seems like a bug to me, and the 90% of your post bitching about people wasn't necessary.

When I get into range to overlap an AI car, the AI starts almost everytime to go into the green whenever there is a longer straight. It is like they are panicking. Often they end up loosing the car while I am passing by. It is pretty annoying. It's like: Help nooo, player is overlapping me, where is the next grass...
Can anyone confirm this?

Hell yeah... seen this one too... two ai cars were smacking into the wall @ Eau rouge (SPA) when I tried to overlap them...
Same on nordschleife, doettinger hoehe: tried to overlap a Zonda R - when I was about 50 m behind him he instantly pulled to the right, off the track an totaling his car.
Another thing: Has anyone experienced those huge pileups of ai cars @ autodromo di pergusa (2nd or 3rd pair of chicanes)??
Every time I make a quickrace on this track with more than 3 cars, I see a huge wreckage in the 2nd lap, almost 3/4 of the ai cars totaled.... it's annoying.

Impreza’s rear diffuser is modelled imprecisely, it doesn’t look like the real one,

Zonda R’s front air inlets are buried in the bumper, they should come up to the edge of the front lip.

Hm...not sure if people got this but I sometimes get this bug where I see all of the sliders in the tuning menu are on the very left, even though the actual values read correctly. Typically happens with my gear ratios. If I scroll down, then all the sliders reset to correct position. Anyone else have this? I forgot to check if this is only visual or actual values will be reset too.

yes, happens to me frequently. i think it's only visual, like the screen painting thread forgets to initialize properly from the actual values in the underlying XML/BFF files until you highlight the slider.
Could be a 'lazy-loading' problem, happens frequently in computer programming.

After a race if you select race again sometimes it will automatically go into replay mode and if you exit the replay and replay the event the hud is turned off and the game locks up when you go back to the menu forcing you to reboot up the game.
This is only tested in career, I am yet to make this happen in quick races.

there is a guide on how to use it so have fun with it and prolly a fps boost in all your games :-P
1) Huge performance drop after few races.
1.01. I've changed graphics card to GTX 560 Ti and while I see better FPS comparing to previous GTX8800 I also have issues with it. After doing some rides the FPS drops to 10-15 fps. I need to restart the game to fix it. I'm running game at 1920x1080 all options maxed out. I don't see any component overheating
2) FPS skipping at crashes. Once again after changing card I've almost have no problems with it, but I wasriding at mount panorama with 40-50 FPS and hit a wall with quite low speed and there were some frames skipped. I've read somewhere that this is the model damage engine kicking in but I watched this crash time and time again and the frameskip was there all the time.
3) I guess the FFB after the patch is somehow broken (MOMO Racing uncombined pedals) I can feel the 'static' and the gear change but nothing at crashes or leaving the tarmac
4) Throttle pedal works strange. I can't keep the rpm at constant. I've tried to remap the axis but it don't help
5) The cockpits are too dark. I can see the gauges at day races only when sun is directly behind the car. There is the control image at graphisc setting menu, but how should perfect control image look like?
6) Only stereo with 5+1 rig.

Griff,
The second patch helped the micro stuttering when the frame rate is smooth so thanks for that...I can do time trials on any course with a very good from rate (medium is really smooth, high is good but not great)...BUT...when I do multi car races it can become somewhat of a slideshow (below 20fps). Im astounded by just adding a few cars into the mix slows things down that much. Based on your knowledge maybe you can help me out on what I should upgrade (or wait for possible tweaks\patches)
Dual core amd x7750 (2 core phenom)

Which will yield me more fps when multiple cars are present? A quad core or new gpu?

The only X2 7750 I know is not a Phenom but a Athlon. If you have an AM2+ MB you can upgrade to a Phenom X2 550 or an X4 955 and that will fit perfect with an GTX 260.

Hi guys,
I'm new here so, first of all, thank you for all useful post on this forum.
I want to add something on BSOD. In my case BSOD appears only after I used a browser (firefox or IE). Perhaps this is only a random event but I haven't noticed BSOD if I play S2U after a system reboot, contrariwise bsod appears in few minutes if I browsed on the net.

but honestly I dont care as it seems too slow for shift2....then again my real question is my bottleneck the gpu or the cpu?
My board does suck and they stopped supporting it years ago so no new bios updates are out and the page doesnt show support...so I guess its a little bit of a risk to just pop in a 955...but one I may have to do eventually.

Your CPU is the bottleneck, and if the board is that old don't put a 955 in it.
Did you OC the CPU?
I have the dark dashboard also on my hd4850 512 Vapor-X on 11.4 offical drivers.
Uncheck surface format optimization helps a little.
Still have to ALT+TAB out and in the game, but at least it is an option. Which is quite boring.
Hopefully it works for other Ati users and that there will be another solve.

Dont know if this helps but this is from a post from another forum on my issue and response:
The quad core won't help... I have an i7 @ 4 GHz with a slightly OCed GTX 480 and I have the same problem, especially at night... yesterday I checked CPU and GPU usage while gaming... CPU usage always stayed below 30% no matter how many cars there are on the screen... GPU usage goes down when there are many cars, for example at the beginning of night races when I am in the back of the grid with many cars in front, I have a GPU usage of ~65% with 45-50 fps... if I would have 100% GPU usage all the time I would never dip below 60 fps... in day races I always have 60+ fps, because 65% GPU usage is enough for day races... conclusion: for me it looks like Shift 2 only uses max. 2 cores of the CPU... if it would fully utilize a quad core, there should be absolutely no performance problems with 20+ cars in front...

I have the same thing. GTX560Ti, I race few races (60fps vsynced) and then another race starts, 20 fps.
This happens with stock clocks on GPU, no overclocking, too. 270.61 (latest) drivers, Win7 64bit. I thought it was caused by overclocking...but no, it is caused by the patch I suppose.
In MSI Afterburner, GPU utilization is 99% when the drop happens...normally it is around 80% (with 60fps). Freaking annoying to have to exit the game every few races.
My PC is 100% stable in games like ARMA2, GTA4, Just Cause 2, Crysis 2 etc..

Also, your mb, ram, nb, htt voltage needs to be a little up too...
Ensure name AA, vsync is OFF.
I even played with ncp settings for AA, multisample, or supersample 8QS...etc...I don't really see a drastic visual difference, but my FPS are no longer capped at 60 nor dive to below 20 ....

hi i have found a solution to this by tinkering with the number values in "vehicleset_pc_custom_pad"( i used the custom pad config - if you use a wheel pick it from the list) located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Electronic Arts\SHIFT 2 UNLEASHED\ControllerDefaults\PC.
1st thing- do NOT edit while game is running
2nd thing right click on the file- properties and uncheck "read only" click ok.
3rd thing- right click again- and "open with" word pad.
Now you can edit settings and they WILL effect your car handling.
MAKE SURE TO BACK UP THIS FILE BEFORE YOU EDIT IT
For that lag issue i change this -
DampeningTimeCentreToLock="0.00050"
DampeningTimeLockToCentre="100.000000" DampeningTimeOppositeLockToCentre="100.100000"
after changes save over original file(BACKING UP IST)
right click again - go to properties and enable read only (as it was before)
if you dont do this all changes will go back to default.(a good way to default for those who forgot to back up)
close files- start game- test drive-unsatisfied?-repeat steps- edit to taste
NOW many other changes can be made here - steering speed, gear duration speed, breaks ,springs etc.
i tweaked all of these to my liking and advantage lol
sooo have fun!!
There could be a solution for the input lag issue. At least it improves things a lot with me.
Get the Sharp mod from Juls, copy and paste controller default folder in your game directory. It's actually the same as Shift1 (as far as I know, to confirm). Copy and paste dinput8.dll too.
I got a Fanatec GT3 RS V2, but it should work with Logitech wheels as well. It reduces input lag a lot, and improves FFB too. I got far better feelings with this tweak.
Try it and tell if it worked for you.
Sorry for my poor english...
-.-
I have played last night a few hours, i have a g25. About the game i put this way:
Complaints:
1) low graphics quality -> yes
2) low FPS and stutters-> good fps but sometimes give some freezes
3) input lag -> yeeees alot, ive tried alot of configs and none have worked, feels like im driving with broken wheels
4) poor FFB -> yes but its not the major problem for me
5) cars feel like floating instead of driving on asphalt -> yes
I think a mod for handling is neeeded, to enjoy the game a little bit more.

Already tried that and a dozen other approaches, apart of that I did serveral reinstalls, cleaned the registry carefully and no luck so far, can't get rid of that horrible dampening feature...:crying:
X360 Wireless Controller, Windoze 7 Pro x64, EADM version - no point in editing the xmls in PC folder.
Today I've decided to take an experiment - I've installed the first Shift game, EADM version as well.
Afterwards, I've messed with the controller files a bit and checked the in-game effect.
Guess what...everything works perfectly fine !

Back to S2U, did some tweaking (the same as for the original shift) - no good.

Same here last night. Same Afterburner action as well. Same OS, same drivers. And I dual boot, and it happens on Windows XP as well. See my post under the "Rate Shift 2's PC Performance" thread. This is intentionally designed to eat hardware per long term EA standards.
Shift 1 was bad on cards, Shift2 sets a new standard. One card wont do it anymore, you now need TWO good ones to peg 60FPS vsynched on 1080p res.
Ok, I haven't seen this specific problem mentioned anywhere yet, I hope someone can provide me some help in finding a solution.
I have tried every possible variety I can imagine to make this work, but I cannot
get the game to accept more than 360 steering lock.
I've got a logitech g25, I'll load the settings in the profiler, launch the game, set it to the same (trying for 540) and when I load a race, somewhere between saving the settings and loading the race, it's defaulted back to 360, I go into settings and it has reset.
Anyone else experience this?
Am I doing something wrong?
Thanks!

I have the same problem as you;)
Before the patch, I ran the game with 120-150 fps.. On day circuits.. No overclocking, also the 270.61 drivers and Win7 64bit.
All the other games I play, I run stable, and Shift 2 doesn't.
I'm running on a GTX580 with a i7 950 @ 4Ghz.. Very strange why this is happening..

Yes, I have the same problem too. I have a Q6600 at 3.4mhz + 275GTX + nvidia 270.61 and after a few races the game drops the performance greatly. I need to restart the game to back to normal performance....anyone knows how to solve this....?

I know a workaround that works for me (if its the same thing causing it post-patch) - pause the race, alt-tab to destop, alt-tab back to game, unpause = full framerate again.
I've changed my system to Win 7 Pro x64 and added some RAM (now 8GB). I've also installed 266.44 drivers and well... I played a bunch of races today with lots or restarts and replay watching and no FPS drop. I don't get 100 FPS but stable 35-60 with v-sync at 60 but it's enough. Upgading OS also gave me real 5+1 sound, on XP I've only had stereo.
I'm having a major problem with my older, low end system.
During a race, the game hangs for about 30-45 seconds, then the graphics turn to this:
http://i1143.photobucket.com/albums/n628/gbascus/shift2u2011-05-0819-26-11-04.jpg
http://i1143.photobucket.com/albums/n628/gbascus/shift2u2011-05-0815-18-43-73.jpg
http://i1143.photobucket.com/albums/n628/gbascus/shift2u2011-05-0819-30-53-26.jpg
Alt-Tabbing out of and back into of the game used to fix the problem until the end of the race, but since I applied the patch, it happens every 60-90 seconds.
I've tried all of the following, but none of it has worked:
Lowering all graphics details
Lowering the screen resolution
Turning off VSync
Turning off AA
Using the driver control panel to override the game's 3D settings
Uninstalling Nview (a tip I found somewhere else)
Uninstalling and reinstalling the game
Running the game in Windows XP compatibility mode
Can anyone help?
My specs:
ECS Geforce 6100PM-M2 motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 x2 6000+ 3.2 Ghz
4GB OCZ RAM
EVGA Geforce 9500 GT 1GB
Windows XP x64 SP2
DirectX 9.0c
Nvidia driver 270.61
Dxdiag:
Why are you using compatibility mode?

Have you checked Temps of your gpu?
also isn't there a newer service pack? or does x64 win xp have different sp's?

make sure you have the latest drivers installed.
but it's possible that it's just time to retire the card.
Why are you using compatibility mode?
It was just a hunch, really. Had no effect whatsoever.
Looking at EVGA Precision, it ran at 100% GPU load and at about 74-75C - maybe the card just doesn't have the horsepower?
9500GT = not enough Bhp
Sorry mate, grab a 6950 or a 570 and you'll be going great guns :D

i'd suggest a 560ti, they are a much bigger bang to the buck then 570's

Because everyone can go out and buy a top end card...justlikethat :|
LOL not saying that, but 6970's and 6950's aren't back-breakingly expensive. They are also much stronger than the equivalent Nvidia offerings currently, taking bias out of the equation. Though there are the odd nutter like yours truly that are grabbing the 6990 ;)
Admittedly I do find it funny...I have a friend who gets the best of the best component wise. And the way we use out PC's, he doesn't really see as much payoff from all that money that he should.
His graphics card cost more than my entire PC :P
lol very true, this is the first time I'm splashing out on the best. I have normally had a good one but not top, and I'm building a rig to last a bit longer than previous ones, so 1090T, 8GB RAM and 6990. When SSD's come into 4th gen I'll grab and SSD for the next performance increase and it'll be set :)
Then about 2 years later it starts again :D
Shift 2 was not a console port or conversion. All 3 were worked on at the same time.
.
But the team assigned for the pc version are sleeping all time when create that, same for for shift 1.
I think some software house push people to buy new pc or gpu on according to hw producer, because anytime we have those problems, very bad optimized products for Pc.
Another thing are the piracy, some software house don't put more time on pc gaming because of that...

Well those are some well-argumented statements that seem to have a lot of credibility in them

After the update of Legends DLC pack and the Speedhunters pack my FPS has drop to 25-30!?! Before the update (on Steam) my game was running great!

they are working while sleeping?
DLC pack - can't drag race online properly: I run one round and then the car just strays at the finish line for the 2nd round (no control) and there's a black screen for the 3rd.
Single player works fine (with the usual CTD or BSOD once in a while for no obvious reason).
I have no mods installed

My comp is a Q6700 OC 2800mhz and Asus GTX 560TI and with everything maxed out, I only get around 24-30fps. Turning off AA didn't make that much difference.

Well my mem is already tweaked to the max. I can't really do much more with my setup, so I'm stuck at 2800mhz, I just can't get it to go any higher, as I end up with freezes, BSODS or it just won't boot up. Probably my crappy Gigabyte 650i mobo, it doesn't OC very well with 4 memory sticks. Anyway I tried messing about with the config file and I used these settings and it's a slight improvement and at least now it's playable.
Track: Brands hatch, cockpit view with 15 cars, all details high, AA set using Nvidia inspector 1x2 4xSS
Before 24-30fps
Now 30-45fps

A new CPU and mobo is definitely on my shopping list.
Thanks!
Well after closer inspection, increasing the number past 3 reduces the detail level, so no wonder it's a bit faster.

4 (on the ...level -settings) seems to return to default setting which might be 2 (_HIGH in UI files and ingame UI)
I'd start with 0 and then work my way up... just leave track details high. "CarDetailLevel" only affects AI car detail, so it's kinda safe to reduce...

Ok, from the beginning
When I started the game I was pretty excited but then...
Not sure if it's the steering lag(playing with keyboard), but with 25 fps(ok for my config) everything feels very laggy. at say 100 kmph I feel like 50 and the car drives like sandbag on bicycle wheels. Can be fixed?
Second. Seen this only one time at ea forums - after installing the game and patching to 1.02 straight away and then playing it for the first time I get lvl 4(5,6) and 2 million bucks after the first race. No fix for this found and it really drives me mad.
Any help would be great
I play offline without logging into autolog(and I hate how much you need to be online and logged into autolog to play the game)
Ed.2 Damn. Reinstalled the game and played without patch and dlc-good. No serious lag, and surprisingly there was a race at the beginning of the game! unlike dlc start off
Then closed the game, installed patch + dlc and returned to play the first race. And againg I go straight to level 5 and unlock a ton of things plus 2bln $. Weird
After a bit of trial found out that that's the patch+dlc causing the savegame problem with money and level.
