I can't even do that first drift training event without bursting my tyres. Something tells me it needs bug-fixing, the car doesn't seem to be tuned right at all.

Take a careful look onto the points you get for every drift in the right top corner of the screen. On the first drift training you have to stay true to the path left-right aso or else you don't get points. Try to score with every drift you make and the 300 points should be no prob.
For easier recovery try to enlarge steering angle which is set to 25° at default for the Nissan, try 30 or even 35°. The diff is also set for drifting, try different settings to see which suits you best, read the description in Shift tuning menu.
And the most important thing imho is throttle control and careful, precise steering. If you spin you either applied too much throttle or too less steering angle or you threw the back of the car too violently into the corner. Don't make choppy movements with the sticks. Throttle really needs to be on an analog stick(duh), normally right analog stick. Try to make smooth, soft transitions with your finger movements, once you find the right balance of steering angle and throttle position, just hold the throttle there and adjust the direction of travel with the steering. Just training and repetition will give you the feeling for the 'sweet spot'.
One of the few advantages you have over using a steering wheel is to be faster when changing the steering angle from left to right, but its also harder to find to best steering angle for the situation because of the lack of travel compared to the steering wheel users, you have to be very, very precise to make up for that. I use very low sensitivity for steering and throttle and a deadzone of ~18%.
I use Logitech Rumblepad 2 on PC which has a little bit longer analog sticks than the XBox360 pad, which gives you a little bit more travel and thus 'feeling'. RT or LT buttons on XBox Pad isn't really suitable for the use of throttle.
