View Full Version : Are grip levels at night....
Simulated in this game? I ask as i swear the cars feel less grippy at night? Do temp drops affect tyre grip?
thought the same! don't find the track any harder(i mean the corners) but the cars seem to handle/feel different..
The game actually has surface changes this time around. There are marbles/loose stuff. The marbles themselves are just eyecandy thats largely non-interactive, but the marble areas are more 'dirty' then others.
Sunset tracks are are hotter and slicker, Daytime tracks are kind of inbetween, and night tracks are a bit less grippy at first because they are colder. Run some long night races where you warm up the tires, and you'll find its actually a more grippy surface, I think this was in a dev diary before launch but I'm not sure.

Placebo effect, maybe?
Your first laps on any track are always slower than the laps after them.
Colder surface=less grip but I don't know if the game simulates it.
So cloudy day and night time racing will become less grip~
Nice simulation~
Anyone can send me a post about how to set up a car?
I'm a Newbie for sim racing~
Since when did night = less grip? I didn't attend that particular amendment to racing theory.
Cold surface + Hot tires = more tack
Hot surface + Hot tires = less tack
A track at night on tires that are up to temperature should provide higher grip levels then one at midday with comparable tire temperature.
@Oggy
Could be a placebo effect. But I was sure I had seen it somewhere in an article or a dev diary, it just escapes me where.

^ Night = less grip because the ambient temperature at night is lower, hence the track cools faster and the base grip level is lower. Unless cars are constantly running over the same section to keep the temp up, the tires have to work harder to stay at optimum temp. Cold track with hot tyres is essentially like hot track with cold tyres in a lesser way...
"A track at night on tires that are up to temperature should provide higher grip levels then one at midday with comparable tire temperature." - Nope
It was stated in one of the interviews that they do simulate different track temperatures dependent on weather, i.e cloudy day vs sunny day.
Incorrect. Variables:
Hot asphalt brings up oils and other solvents. Melts rubber faster, the rubber builds up faster, and creates a slicker racing surface.
There is not a world you can describe where something hot and malleable on something hot and abrasive has more tack then something hot and malleable on something cold and abrasive.
Many cars set fastest laps during track cool down periods at dusk and the optimum warmup before full dawn. This isn't solely because of a small fraction of prime horsepower.
These are the times the game simulates, because its idea of night is much closer to sunrise then it is night, there's far too much ambient light for it to be the dead of night.
You'd be right, if it was midnight, and the cooldown had already occured, however.
I found the biggest impact of night races on car control is reduction of FPS :(

Turn off shadows details. +50% fps.

I was guessing that, but high shadows look sooo good :(

Medium shadows still look good. In face those weird 'smudges' that you can see on cars at night only show up on 'high' so it looks better in a way.

How much FPS gain did you see going from high to medium?

Not a whole lot but it seems smooth enough in the few races I tried after lowering it.
I still hope they can boost performance enough in a patch so I can use AA.
