How to use custom livery in game:

use the unpacker from NFS Tools 1.45 (http://www.nogripracing.com/details.php?filenr=23167) to unpack the VehicleHRLiveries.bff to your SHIFT2 folder and rename your VehicleHRLiveries.bff to VehicleHRLiveries - copy.bff

now copy your painted dds file to SHIFT2\vehicles\textures and overwrite or use the JSGME Mod Installer (http://www.users.on.net/~jscones/software/products/jsgme_setup.exe)

OR

BFFinject:

if you have this problem:

- go to your nfs tools folder and delete the cache folder and archive.xml -


now we have 2 opportunities:
1.: deinstall NFS Shift 1 and clean registry entry about NFS Shift 1. restart bffinject and you get this screen....

choose your pakfiles folder from shift 2 unleashed and the program starts right


2.: go to your NFS Shift 1 install path and create a folder called "pakfiles" and copy all bff files from shift 2 unleashed to this folder (if you use this version to edit the bff files you need to copy the edited bff archives to the right shift 2 pakfiles folder)

Injection is very easy. We will give a read me. tonight we will release templates for GT1 and GT3 cars. Retro Cars tomorrow and the others next days.

it's no problem to play the game unpacked with new liverys. do the same as shift 1 with your rcf file.
what you can't do is a completly new car in the unpacked game (3d model) - only replace

You cannot add new files into bff-container. But you can play unpacked game. Just change lines from rcf-file to use a new livery

Can u tell me how its work. because there is no "-loose" command...
replacing a car livery in the bff's results in a crash.

You cannot add new files into bff-container. But you can play unpacked game. Just change lines from rcf-file to use a new livery

honestly this needs a lot more explanation.. you did release some of them but without a proper readme or a tutorial on how to do it they will be useless for now

What rfc file? Do you mean the nfs2_content.ncf in the steam folder?

I'm assuming he means you edit the car's .rcf file to point to a livery DDS outside of the pakfiles, then only repack the .rcf.

Thanks to RN Release Group for the templates.

I tried to replace the BMW M3 GT2 Rahal livery with a new livery.

First, don't use the livery files in pakfiles/vehicles. These files are ignored by the game. So I figured out the used liveries are all in the pakfiles > VehicleHRLiveries.bff. I tried to inject it but the game crashed when I choosed the M3. So the files have to be resized to original format 2048x2048.

Finally it worked.

I used DXT1, no alpha and 12 mipmaps (original file had 11, but you have to choose one more when saving as dds). I don't know if the 11 mipmaps are important.
The the injected file(s) need to be in the same folder hierarchy as it will be in the injected .bff.

BTW, some rare files in the VehicleHRliveries.bff have an alpha layer, e.g. the two Z4 GT3. Any idea why?

Some observations about the BMW M3 GT2 in Shift 2:

There are 3 additional liveries for the BMW M3 GT2 in the VehicleHRliveries.bff, but they don't fit onto the wireframe. I think they are from Shift 1.

The 3D model has some small but significant changes from the original model. I wonder why the have not used the model from Shift 1 and they even modeled the new one incorrect.

This all looks like patchwork.

Im not at home so i cant check it.

Almost everything in VehicleHRLiveries is livery. Some carbon files and one window file for the Ford rtrx.

I also try to put a livery in bff, very same name, and the inject tool says me that file is not in the original archive!!!! help!!!

Painted according to supra template, saved as info said, and swapped some default livery (injected into VehicleHRLiveries.bff) :) its unfinished of course

ah, man, thanx. i know i know. i´m sad for a "no-release" of those for myself also, because of the much work i put into re-do many logos from the beginning, not to speak about the re-search of original pics to get the thing as close as possible.
well, the body of s1 always did not make me happy. the more happy i was to see that s2 will include the "real" beast. :)
well, still have to finish the 4th skin and tune all to the real s2 body. just waiting for a "good" way to work with all the s2-files.

I have a little problem... :(
When i make the skin, i put an element in photoshop, than save it in DDS, inject it, the game crash. remove the element the game works.
After a point, i cant add anything new to the pic, it crashes the game.
Any ideas?

well i wish i could help but so far i haven't been able to even get it to work from the beginning. Tried everything with regards to the forum posts and the included read-me for injecting, image size's etc etc but still a no go. Game crashes every time...

CAR: GT1 Matech Ford GT1

Using Photoshop CS5 64bit

Latest NVidia Photoshop DDS plugin (v8.23b)

Also noticed the included read-me says to re-size to 4096x4096 but others say to re-size to 2048x2048. tried both...

A detailed step by step guide from someone who has successfully gotten it to work might be handy.

Yes, indeed, yokogawa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:1997_Castrol_Tom's_Supra_01.jpg) ;) Im using gimp 2.6 with dds plugin, templates from RN Release Group and injector (from shift 1). Im changing first template to 2048x2940 (cos its more easily to work on my old pc instead of 4096), painting skin on it. Then resizing (which changes overall pic ratio) to 2048x2048, saving as dds with dxt1 and mipmaps. Of course file has to be named exactly as file which we are going to replace with injector, and that's it.

Maybe try first to inject skin prepared by someone else (there are 2 in download section). At least you will know that injector works well, or not. And btw im not sure but maybe its important to name skin layer as "main surface", you can check this.

Injecting works fine. My other skin for the 67 vette works fine, so i think its not the injector, also saveing 2048x2048, dxt1+12mipmap.
There is a point where i cant add anything new to the skin (for example a new logo). Save as usual, no errors, then inject, again, with no errors, start the game and then crash. remove the new layer, save, inject, working. Flatting the image, or layers not working either.

Btw i just finished my first (ever) skin, its not perfect or 1:1 real copy, and have few glitches because of crapy texture mapping prepared by game developer. If you like it, take it ;) im uploading skin now

what's the format of the image? I guess it tga? if so make sure it 32bits non compressed.

By the way is bff tool is the only tool that decompress the bff ?

Never used gimp for my skins (shift 1), allways Photoshop.
So I'm not sure what the problem could be.
Problems happend while I'm doing skins,:
1).remember one skin wich add one pixel while 'merging' all Layers, so picture got 2048x2049 ... don't know why, but it happens

2.)While saving as dds an alpha channel 'survived' from one one layer, main livery coldn't have one.

Maybe save your done skin as *.jpg and then convert this jpg to a dds-file

I'm genuinely curious as to why you guys care so much about the skins?

I mean, I'm (sort of) a realism nut in certain areas, but skins? Not really, though I can certainly appreciate racing cars with liveries that are believable.

So perhaps some of you could post a few words on why skins mean so much to you?

Personaly if i have a skin which i designed, on "my" car which have a parts the way i like, brings the feeling that if not in real life, but at least in the game the car is MY car :) + for me adds more fun :D

In your example: In bffinject, the source folder line should read:

C:Users\----\Downloads\Toms Castrol Toyota Supra

not

C:Users\----\Downloads\Toms Castrol Toyota Supra\vehicles\textures


I had the same problem and soon discovered it was because i needed to have bffinject point to the folder just before the vehicles/textures folders for it to work properly.

Leave the folders how they are, just point bffinject to the Toms Castrol Toyota Supra folder instead.

I had the same problem and soon discovered it was because i needed to have bffinject point to the folder just before the vehicles/textures folders for it to work properly.

Leave the folders how they are, just point bffinject to the Toms Castrol Toyota Supra folder instead.

Has anyone gotten the "edit RCF" file method to work for inserting skins?

Specifically, not sure how to tell the cars RCF file to look in a specific location for the new dds file.

I use Paint.net for my dds exporting.
I havn't figured out the HR livery yet.

Since bff can't add new(bigger) file, so rcf file is useless~

HR file should be same as normal livery but with higher res (2048x2048), and you should save as DXT1 as RN Release Group said~

BTW, I used Paint.NET to make some own skin too, it is easy to use compare to PS~

There is no such a thing as "file compression limitations" in this case. Im able to put whatever i want on skin and it works fine in game

You must create a specular texture DXT5
then you have to create you a file. BMT which recalls the texture
Unfortunately, my English does not allow me to explain better :-(

Hi all!
I want to do my own skin and i don't what to do and also i have some problems :( ,
1st i added a little logo in PS3 in porsche_997gt2 and then changed size to 4096x4096 then i saved to dds (i chosed No alpha DXt1 or something) and 2 another files ,windows i saved to dds (DXT5). And now what i should to do? The file porsche_997gt2 have got a 10,6MB ,not too much? How to use custom livery in game:

use the unpacker from NFS Tools 1.45 to unpack the VehicleHRLiveries.bff to your SHIFT2 folder and rename your VehicleHRLiveries.bff to VehicleHRLiveries - copy.bff

I read it, and i chosed in that box after deinstallation shift 1 packfiles folder and i have the same error : Wrong game path chose another folder? You didn't give me answer about that 3 files of my new skin, when you're doing a new skin you're painting on that templates and save it to dds? Or just paint on it and them copy that skin to new fiel nad save it to dds? ... :(:?:

BFFinject now is working, but still i don't know how to that onw skin in PS.
Now i used BFFunpacker and unpack VehicleHRLiveries.bff and chaned name to VehicleHRLiveries-copy.bff, and them i put that another skin (not my) to SHIFT2\vehicles\textures and it's not working :/ i have the same normal skin

I started work on my first skin for the Gallardo GT3 last night, and am also writing a simple step by step guide for creating and applying customliverie sin Shift 2 which I will share once it is complete.

However, I have a quick question about the templates that I hope someone can help me with. The .ZIP file that I downloaded contained the following three .PSD templates for the Gallardo GT3:

lamborghni_gallardo_gt3.psd
lamborghni_gallardo_gt3_int_windows.psd
lamborghni_gallardo_gt3_ext_windows.psd


Assuming that I am creating a new livery and not replacing and existing one, and that I don't want to put any graphics on the windows of the car. Do I just need to paint and inject the main template file or do you always need all three files?

- if you want to use bbfinject, YES to much!
- if you use the unpacked liveries option, NO here we have no limit!

did you overwrite a file while? if you want to replace an exist skin you need to overwrite a livery. but if you want to use one more livery for this car you need to edit the rcf-file with new lines!

The Corvette C6R GT1 has matte paint for the Mad-Croc liveries :
corvette_gt1_livery01.dds & corvette_gt1_livery01_spec.dds

It is a DXT5 dds so you can open it in PS to see how it is done and apply the right colors to your specular dds.

First off, a big thank you for the templates!

I just started a project of recreating some old BMW M1 liveries.

However, it is a pain to always have to check in the game to make sure everything lines up.

Is there any way you guys could send me the car model for the M1 (and maybe theE36 and E30 M3 and 190E Evo 2 too) in z3d form or something, so I can check in zmod how my paint scheme fits?

Basically you don't have to restart the game.

In showroom, just alt-tab back to image editor, modify, save again and then alt-tab into game, select another car, wait for the game to load that other livery, go back to your car and it will reload the livery from disk, so with the modifications.

Should save you some time if you restart the game everytime. And at least you see what will be the result in game.

Oh, yeah, I should have phrased it a bit different.

I know that the livery can be reloaded like that, but I'd like to be able to have free control of the camera while checking it over. Shift2 doesn't allow that, sadly. It is possible to work around using the camera tool, but it's a bit of a hassle to always have to start a race then use those very slow camera controls to check the part you just painted, because the very limited default camera control in the menu is not really enough for some parts of the car.

Also, my computer sadly isn't the best and running photoshop and shift 2 at the same time makes it kinda slow. :D

Each car (or most of them at least) has three templates - one for the livery and two for the windows (<xxx>_ext_windows.psd and <xxx>_int_windows.psd).
The Audi RS4 for example has a template called "audi_rs4_ext_windows" - guess what it's for ;]

Ok, I had to dig through some files to find a clear example.
Here's the "code" for one of Porsche 997 Cup R liveries:

Next to the regular livery entry there's the part with "banner2_diffuse". It's being replaced by a new .DDS file (POR_CUP_R_BANNER2_011_DIFFUSE.dds), which looks like this:

ENDR I just saw your post and trying to understand it. Forgive me I'm not a programmer just a designer. I want to put a windshield banner on my evoiv. I figured out how to get the rcf file but I don't see anything about a banner diffuse in there. Do we make it up? Or does it by default have to have one? Not sure what to do from here.... please help. Thanks.

I still didn't figure out how to put a windshield banner on these cars (Using xxxx_ext_windows.dds) seems when i save them in DXT5 format, the banner comes almost invisible on the windshield. If anyone knows the correct way to put windshield banners ingame please share coz i would love to know :) Thanks!
