View Full Version : what will set CARS apart?

IRacing is supposed to have the community and laser scanned tracks. RFactor 2 will be most moddable and (with rF1 content) will have everything and anything that's raceable on almost any track in the world- all mods for free. GTR3 will have high quality cars on high quality tracks and DLC. Graphics minded individuals will have the Codemasters games.
It seems all niches for sim and sim-like racing games are full. With older titles and new ones to come I don't see the niche CARS fills. Can someone tell me what the hook is for this game? I'm not trolling, I'm serious. I'm sure I am not the only one asking this question and if we can get an answer it'll get rid of the elephant in the livingroom.

Why, that high quality Lotus 67 of course! Although it may go if the investor winds blow on our faces or community tears itself apart in the process.
To be honest it is a really good question. The only difference currently seems to be the production and developing model. Simmers and gamers get a say in the process, although I'm not that keen on committee building of anything. Design must have a vision that requires close group or even one person hammering some sense into narrow focused jarheads. That's why there is Linus Torvalds still there in top of the very open linux world. Not that His eye hasn't burned many a good man in the process and have occasional blind spots...
However we know that SMS can create highest quality in many ways, and their track record is the best there is. The names you picked all lack in something, although rF2 is again in it's second iteration very promising. But mods have their problems too, and many of the good rF1 ones rest on the shoulders of previous ISI engine based sims in so many ways.
GTR3 then... No doubt it can be good, but yet again one FIA GTR more?
For time being I perceive CARS as just another sim. Maybe it will be arcadeish but sim nonetheless. We still don't have a perfect one, and this project with a small but significant twitch is as promising as any of them.
Currently there simply are too many questions in air to give any kind of good answer to the question. I suppose many of us just think that there can't be too much of good thing. :)
And I still want that Lotus 67! :|

How about combining the qualities of those separate niches? Never-seen-before graphics with state-of-the-art physics (if you want good looks AND convincing car behaviour)? Content developed as decided by the community?
And who says there cannot be 'two games in one niche' if one game does it better than the other? The idea that a game cannot do something because another game already did it strikes me as a bit odd...

 I think so too !
And what is rfactor ? Only a Base for Modding not more the content they have on release are very small not enough for years. It lives only with mods and the most of them are 3.class quality. Which modder have real car datas or know how the cars in mod feels real . I think no one ! Thats only a Game not a Simulation for me.
rFactor2 are the same no enough professional content.
GTR is a very good base and the best sim ever but only FIA . Content on release are enough for years. Gtr2 oldscool graphics !
netKar Pro is a very good sim but no enough content and buggy. And very slow developement. Oldscool graphics too !
Race07 and other Simbin Simulations are have the most content in and a good Simulation Base but oldscool graphics.
Iracing low content but very professional Simulation and fast developement.
Shift2 have the best graphics with DX9 ever seen in Race Sim nice modelling and track modelling but its more for Arcade Racing.
Shift2 shows me that SMS can do the best visual racing experience ever seen with Simulation parts. And that is the Ground why i think that SMS can do better than other if he can invest enough and with no publisher in the neck.
And many more facts. One of them are the developement work for long time with many content in it that we can have in future.
All the years i played around with sims i wait for the one which can do a full simulation whith best graphics tecnic today and very big content and i see one on the whay thats C.A.R.S !
Why becouse SMS makes GTR2/GT legends (full Sims) and SHIFT2 with nice graphics and when you mix it you can see the best SIM ever.
I hope that wee can find Lasertracks in future as buyable content and the world is nice for me.
IanBell please show the world who can do it and who is the best !

good physics
good graphics
good sound
in that order. is that a niche? maybe... maybe not :-)
content and design is another topic - and seems to be more influenced by what investors want - we'll see 8-)
I guess you have to keep your elephant until more infos are available - or even better until we can drive the first builds...

yep I see it might be a bit Forza-ish in the end since many people want a career mode, drift and that stuff. it's also one thing that those other mentioned PC sims don't have... but if there's an offline mode, why not make it as good as possible with much variety and longevity 8-)

Graphics minded individuals will have the Codemasters games.
Codemasters make cool-looking graphics, not necessarily realistic, or more rather, natural graphics.

No limits by consoles (backporting instead of up-porting)
Well-chosen car selection (not 10 copies of the same car "cough" GT5)
Near-unparalleled detail level
Stunning track renditions
Unmatched community tools and support (hopefully)
BEST PHYSICS EVAR!!!!!

CARS will allow us to assist and constantly track it's development. Each of us will be able to gather professionally made content (not mods like in rF) to your likings under the most technically advanced base in sim racing (DX11 etc.). No publisher - no stupid decisions from people far from playing games. + some profit in the end :-).

Would be nice supercar makers could invest and help implement their new models.
Evaluation of community addons before approval.
Also long term idea of mine is a academy for sims were you could pay to get
diplomas.

+1 on the supercars,
Your work so far looks amazing!
If the content is race care only I probably wont be terribly interested, throw some street cars/supercars in the mix, and I will buy every street/supercar package released!!

I read this in another post and it is not to hard to figure out what game he is talking about :)
{I also believe the programmers were close to achieve the greatest racing sim of all time. I can only imagine their frustration not being permitted to finish their game.}
I hope this helps set it apart !

Codemasters make cool-looking graphics, not necessarily realistic, or more rather, natural graphics.
DiRT 3 has photorealistic wet weather effects at times, and cockpit racing at night can be pretty hair raising graphically. Also;

Skyjones lighting tweaks for DiRT 2 made for some photorealism at times.
