View Full Version : Thrustmaster TH8RS mod advice

I just got a TH8rs shifter, which is really good, except its hard to use gears 5 and 6.
Once I start going towards 5th it seems to really want to go towards the 7th/R slot, so I keep missing that gear.
And going from 5th to 6th it tries to go back to the center, and I keep winding up either hitting the gate between 4th and 6th, or going into 4th. Mostly my problem is probably because on my Fanatec and G27 shifter to go from 5th to 6th i just push away and down and it rides the edge down into the gear, which if I try the same thing with this it would go into reverse.
So, just wondering what I could use to maybe block off (and just use a button on the wheel for reverse), or add more resistance the the 7th/R slot (so i can still kinda ride the edge into 6th, and just go into 7th or R with more force, like maybe some kind of foam or something), but not sure how to attach it to the shifter plate.
My other option would be to just swivel it around and remap the buttons, but then Id have abit of the same problem when going down the gears into 2nd.

Hopefully Thrustmaster and the modding community will release additional bolt-on shifter plates for 4-, 5-, and 6-speed transmissions, similar to what ACT Labs have for theirs:

I have gate plates soon to release:

I redesigned those in the photos to allow for the reverse to stay in position 8 (full right, down). That way you won't need to recalibrate the shifter each time you change the plates.
Below is a render of the ones I'm cutting on the laser this week. They're going to be made from 0.125" ABS:

Can't you just program the shifter on a PC

@gslooney - yes, you can program it, but the gate plates restrict the shaft position.
Here are a couple shots of the new plates I've made:

Those are great Derek, but please also keep a model with an ordinary "6 gate" and without labels. It is very useful for classics with dog-leg gearboxes (Many BMWs, Ferrari, De Tomaso, etc.) and also simple 5 gears cars.

Please let me (Us) know how to purchase. I am using the sequential only because of the annoying factory gate

take off the factory gate and put a whole bunch of tape over the part where the 7th/R gears are. not quality but its free.

i order a th8 rs and cant wait to receive it....
can i configure it to use the reverse up left ?
well a lot of car have this patern and i use to it
and for the after market compatibility shift knob ?
what kind can i use
I found if I grip the shifter well downshifting I dont have a problem with missing shifts. When I first tried it i was missing some due to a light grip on it.

Does someone knows where to find a senquetial-style knob for the TH8 ?
Like Frex's one :

I don't know... it kind of looks like a small vibrator with a hole drilled in it.

I ordered mine from the Ebay. It's not exactly the same as Flex's, but same idea. It's just general handbrake/gear shifter knob, but was easy to install and works great.

Thanks ! I'll look for a handbrake knob, didn't think about it.
By the way, do you know if a M10 x 1.25 one would fit?

Dunno about that. TH8RS stick (without knob) is 9mm diameter, should be one of the standards used in real cars too. Many knobs (makes me giggle everytime I type knob:mrgreen:) have fitting parts for couple of generic diameters. The one I got have kinda tube that I screwed straight to TH8RS stick and then screwed knod to that tube, hope this makes sense. Just unscrew the default knob and see how that is connected and use that info when you order new one. Theres couple of different ways to connect knobs, so make sure you get the correct one.
This (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Universal-Aluminum-Shift-Knob-E-Brake-Handle-Pit-Lane-Chrome-Cover-Black-New-/370649335955?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item564c6c0893&vxp=mtr) is what I got.
