View Full Version : Just when you thought you knew everything about GTR2

I have had a couple of hundred league races, hundreds of fun/practice races, and easily 15,000+laps of practice in GTR2. With that said, every once in a long while it will still blow my mind.

We ran a 3 hour league race at Sepang recently. With about 6 laps to go (out of 90 or so) it started to rain. With championships on the line, everyone started scrambling, thinking what should we do? Pit for wets? Stick it out on worn slicks?

Well, the rain was very light, and I mean light on the track surface, but also light on the windshield! I have never seen a difference in the amount of rain on my windshield. Sometimes the track gets wet much faster or slower, but I did not know GTR2 could simulate different amounts of rain hitting the car. Just awesome!!

What are some of the things, however so small, that you have noticed that just make GTR2 still stand at the top of the sim market after so many years?

Yep, it's the small details all around (and not just graphical ones) that make GTR2 still the best racing-sim title/platform for me. 8-)

The sad thing you may realize into your own post is that, if it took a veteran GTR2 player like you to notice it, other players may never notice that detail (and plenty more). That's part of the reason why new dev-houses skip such nice subtle details for newer games in the current era, focusing instead on imediately noticeable "epic and flashy" details. And that's for all gaming genres. :der:

Such nuances are lost on the majority of sim racers, who seemingly only want clear skies and full throttle racing. One of the first true sims, Sierra's IndyCar Racing, had wet races, with nice visuals, reduced grip, and rain tires; hardly anyone ever opted for this and Sierra never included it in subsequent sims. You could also blow a tire in ICR if it overheated or you ran to long without a tire change; I think the MicroProse GP series was the only other sim to feature this.

Indeed.

I'm actually setting up wet races intentionally, just so I can learn to race in the rain. That and working on my pit stops are the current 'next step' for me. Now, if I could only get wet-weather tires in GTL.

There is something gtr2 missed that I wish it had: The ol' flat tire! I mean a slow leak or perhaps an explosive blowout on the backstretch making it necessary to limp back to the pits on 3 wheels while that 4th tire shreads coming in. This, a common occurance in racing (affecting strategy/ luck), "missed" by this wonderful sim.

I like to play 6 hour races in gtr2 from day to dark and the races where it started raining and then the track dried were the best races I had in any sim. I don't think I ever played a race shorter then 3 hours in gtr2. I'm def on the hardcore side, so I appreciate the little things to.

You can have a blow out. I have seen it only a couple of times, and only when someone stays on wets/inters way too long. Last time was a wet 3 hour race at Road America, when the track started drying and guys stayed out just a little too long. One guy had a blowout going around the carousel.

If so (having a blow out, I mean) then maybe it could have been made so that it occurred more easily or more often- as often as it might happen in real life. I'm curious (because I've never had it happen) : was the blow out moddeled graphically? I mean, could you see a shreading tire from external view and/or feel the bouncing car (on 3 wheels) from the cockpit? Also, have you had the "slow death" of a slow puncture (air leak) in gtr2?

I remember I've got a blow out in a 6 hour race, when I tried to triple-stint my tyres. Towards the end of the 3rd stint the handling got worse, and then the pit man warned me about worn tyres, few laps later one of them blew.

Interestingly, I've never seen a changing weather in a race, and I too do 3 and 6 hours races.

There is no shredded tyre but the car runs on the wheel rim.

Yes i realize the same,
GTR2 is for me a fantastic program but changing weather in Races ??????

We have here a lot of threats about it and weather-generators, and txt files change myself the weather, but changing weather "as a big suprise" (without edit a txt file before race) will be very very nice,
what we need to do this !!!!!!!!!!!

thanks for reply, because a lot of people will be interest !!

hello,

weather do not change during a race, if you set weather to changeable do not help.
with changeable the weather change only from sesson to session.
in practise and quali the weather can change, but not often.
but in race NO !!! only the track temps. do get a little higher the first laps, that was it.

but there a different weather programms for download.
the best is the weather patch (do not know exactly name), this is patch, that weather change during race without you must set manuel something.
this patch IS exactly this, how normaly the weather should change.

nobody do know how weather will be for the race and what comes during the race with this patch, if you set weather to changeable.

2 other good weather programs are GTR2 New Advanced Weather available here: http://www.autosimsport.net/media/downloads/GTR2_NAW_Setup.zip

and Autosim Weather Generator which is available here: http://www.nogripracing.com/details.php?filenr=15099

Both of these programs do not require the no-cd exe and have a nice interface (gui).
They simply replace the weather.txt file prior to starting the game. Plus the Autosim weather generator allows you to create your own weather conditions. Both are very easy to use.

I race in the same league with the OP and I guarantee you that our weather changes in the course of a race.

I bailed out of the 3 hours Sepang race with cramps on my braking foot, but a few days before I raced at SPA in the GT2 series and we started with blue skies, we went in for the first pit routine and not 10 minutes later is started raining.

Not only it started raining, but it rained in one part of the track and not the other. Eventually I jumped in for Inters but when I exited it stopped raining.

Had I not made that poor choice of pitting for tires I had already gone from very last position (for crashing in the previous week superpole) to 14th place, a gain of over 15 positions (I think we had 38 starting? I can't remember).

By pitting I squandered any chance I had of a point finish and ended up 17th.

So yes, it does change.

Correct, but we are using a weather mod. I am not sure which one, though.

hi conticreative,

i know NAGP league too,
they use the weather patch which i did make link.
in their monday and thursday league,
in saturday league i do not know, but i think in this league they use a weather programm for make own weather, think close to real life weather.

in thursday and monday they use the weather patch, where nobody knows what comes and the changeable weather is exactly this, how it should be in orginal, but it is not in orginal changeable.

with this patch everthing is random in weather,
only indicator is the .gdb file, where you can watch the average rain %, like 0.3 = 30% chance of rain in this track, or 0.5 which is 50% chance of rain in this track and so the possibility is higher that race is in rain and possibility is higher that during a dry race the weather will change to rain with 50%.
if you have a track with 0.0 then nearly never ever it will rain in this track or condition change, nearly always dry.

Does the weather mod work offline too, or just online? I'd like to have a changeable weather next time when I'm doing a 1000km offline race at Spa.

I use this one: http://www.nogripracing.com/details.php?filenr=30037

With the program set to "showers" I have some interesting races; it works for the 24h races too.
Offline, you can also see the difference of strategy of each driver: when starts raining, some drivers go immediately to the pits, others wait till the slick tyres become just useless; if the "shower" has a long duration, normally the first ones have an advantage, but when the shower has the duration of just 4-5mins, and a low intensity, then the drivers who didn't change from slick to inters/wet get an enormous advantage, because the track is not enough wet to make the inters/wet last, but still good for slicks, and so the guys who changed have to change again loosing a lot of time.

With such races, the result of a championship is always uncertain and with great suspence.

This patch is fantastic. It blew my mind. Works in single player. Update GTR2 to 1.1.0.0 if you havent already and copy the contents of the patch into your GTR2 folder. You start the patch and it starts GTR2 and the weather changes during the session. Quite realistic.
