I have nearly finished the Impreza conversion. Just need to finish learning what all the appropriate settings are for materials to make th elights and windows look right. Here is a picture of the cockpit. And a couple pictures from the real car. They are using analog meters again.

Looking good

Well I finally started the Alpine conversion yesterday. It's less than 25% with lots of graphical bugs, but I think you will find the physics to be much more lively than GTL.

What is the weight distribution on the Alpine?

Well I finally started the Alpine conversion yesterday. It's less than 25% with lots of graphical bugs, but I think you will find the physics to be much more lively than GTL.

What is the weight distribution on the Alpine?

I'll dig some stuff out and the other data I promised you.

What does rFactor do about the pilote & co-pilote? They have a big effect on the weight distribution.

I think it treats them as dead weight. You have to figure them into the car weight. It may be possible to adjust the balance using the same method used for the "light weight" upgrade.

Here is some testing on the weight reduction features.

// Level 1 upgrade
UpgradeLevel="Fat Codriver"
{
Picture=BasicWeightReduction.tga
Description="Adds a huge old fat codriver" // "Removes passenger seats, A/C unit, and other unnecessary parts for a lighter overall car"
Price=0
GEN=<PSEATEXISTS>=" " // "//"
GEN=<PSeat>=ZR_pseat.gmt

HDV=[GENERAL]
HDV=Mass+=555.0
HDV=Inertia+=(20.0,26.0,5.0)
HDV=CGHeight+=0.30 //0.002
HDV=CGRightRange=(0.8, 0.005, 1) // fraction of weight on RIGHT tires
HDV=CGRightSetting=0
HDV=CGRearRange=(0.30, 0.005, 1) // fraction of weight on rear tires
HDV=CGRearSetting=0
}

In the upgrades file, you can use a +,-, or * before an equal sign to do math with the numbers already in the hdv file, or just use the = alone and type in the actual new value.

Ok

Here are the files - if you need any help please ask.

Oh...better add that AFIK the only diff lock used was a cam/pawl type. Effectively making it open on coast and a locker on power - crude, but probably did the job on the loose.

Do you need brake disc sizes?

MudSnow
18 March 06, 20:31
Thanks, do those files include the weight of occupants in the mass and CofG figures?

Roger
18 March 06, 21:22
There are two mass figures - the lower one (i.e - 605kg for the 1300S) is without and I have added two people @ 70kg each

MudSnow
19 March 06, 01:33
I adjusted the hdv file to 745kg, made the codriver option independent from the other weight upgrades, and made the 1800cc engine upgrade so that it also adds 105kg to the mass of the car.

Driving solo lightens the car by 75kg and changes the balance to 51/49 left/right.

Do you think it is better for me to make the 1800cc engine as an upgrade, or should I make it a different car with a different body, and wheel arches and all that?

I can also limit the upgrades so that they can only be bought as complete packages.

Does your Alpine generally oversteer or understeer? Now this car has a very strong tendency to oversteer, especially when lifting the throttle. Is GTL accurate, where it has nearly neutral handling?

Roger
19 March 06, 11:28
So, effectively you are building a 1300S, that can be upgraded? Maybe do the upgrade to a 1600S (up to end 1970) as the body shape is very much the same.

650kg (without occupants)

The engine would make about 155/160bhp @ 7000rpm - you could probably use that same shape torque curve as the 1300S just add torque to get the power up.

Brake discs were 254mm x 12mm all round (Gros Freins) - homologated a little later ;)

Gearbox was 353-16 "rallye"

3.62
2.50
1.91
1.48
1.03 (or 1.14)
3.77:1 Final

Or 353-20 "normales"

3.62
2.36
1.69
1.29
1.03 (or 1.14)
3.37:1 Final

The 1800cc car has the high square rad intake and pagoda arches.

Hard to describe exactly how it handles as I have never driven the bigger engined car - which has more weight out the back.

Turn-in is amazingly sharp - hardly move the wheel and in it comes.

In a tight corner the car then tries to understeer at this point hopefully the energy you put into it during turn-in and then by applying power will cause it to rotate and assume oversteer.

Long corners will tend towards oversteer - but quite neutral, quite easy to control on the throttle.

Any kind of lift off promotes the rear swinging around - this can get out of hand very easily once the mass is moving (up until that point it is a fantastic way to control corner angle).

Once it is oversteering driving it out sideways on the power is astoundingly easy.

A couple of things - no rear ARB at all.

The rear suspension is swing axle, can you model this in rFactor? There are very long radius arms leading forward from the swing axles, these connect more or less right on the CofG of the car at the centre-line - I have a sneaking suspicion that the drive being sent through at that angle helps the car be driven on the throttle.

The rear suspension is very limited in bump and droop. The front has lots of droop travel, not loads of bump (but it's Ok).

Anything I can test drive? :D

Presently, it has great turn in, and long corners tend to oversteer, but it is not neutral feeling. They are easy so long as you don't wiggle the steering wheel much. Quick lift-off causes massive oversteer which is very difficult to catch.

Driving sideways is still very tricky, not easy.

In general, the car feels much more lively than in GTL, and it especially feels much better going over rough terrain, which is good for us.:D

That suspension design is possible.

I will have a beta version to you by the end of this week. I have vacation starting Wednesday:)

Will you measure the droop on your car? (Just measure the distance from fender lip to a point on the wheel, before and after jacking) I guess measuring bump is trickier, maybe have a few friends sit on it for you.:P

BTW, I'd also like to see a picture of your seats. Unless you are using modern racing seats like the GTL cars.

Roger
19 March 06, 18:21
Ok, I can do that....as for bump - I'm not taking the springs out again :D - so I'll measure approx using the bump stops and work it out from there.

My seats are the correct ones for the rally car, so is the fuel tank....

It's Lienz. I will post a new Lienz file soon. I need to fix some track markers and collision objects.

DL'ed your little file for Lienz free drive, nice fun on that little backroad- Using the Lienz cars with gravel tyres feels pretty good. The road is a bit rough, but I like how the game feels driving through the big ruts. The cars go airborne pretty well too. :) Adjustable diffs and a real handbrake would be nice. I think I managed to play around with the car files enough to get gravel tyres for the ZR (I think that's what it's called, the little RWD car) and it feels pretty good in the gravel too, although I was using the fully modded out one and it was tricky to keep the nose pointing in the right direction under throttle. :) It does show some promise for a rally mod....

Just so you know LV, don't let version 0.8 get out. I got PMed by Scott J and Max Angelo about it. v0.85 has some content removed.

For those who weren't in on the drama yesterday, I have a censored version of Lienz Freedrive.;) Release is postponed indefinitely.

I also love taking the ZR around Lienz. It really is my favorite car in the game so far. Seems like everyone has stopped using it online. We had a lot of great races with it the first few months after rF was released.

Hmm, care to explain?

Like I said, version 0.8 is temporarily banned from distribution. There is an official mod coming later. Don't know when exactly, but v0.8 can't be released until after then. If you were one of the lucky 7 people who got it besides Max A, hold on to it, and don't post it anywhere. It may be a while before it can be released.

Question......how the heck do you find the gravel roads??

Lord_Verminaard
31 March 06, 13:59
Take a right out of the pits (even though the guy is pointing to your left) and there will be one road that goes straight and another that takes a hard right, well, in-between those there is a gravel road. Have fun, and there is a really big jump just after the first two turns. Especially if you hit it the other way!!!! :D

Hi all. The official layout will be coming soon. I'm trying to square a few things with it still.

Thanks

Hi Scott, sounds like you speak with some authority - any more to tell us?

Hi Scott, sounds like you speak with some authority - any more to tell us?

Not much to tell, really. At some point while building Lienz I had to let the 6th layout go stagnant to finish the first 5. I'm just going back now and getting a few things on the 6th up to speed. It still needs testing, too....

MudSnow
14 April 06, 03:13
Thanks for checking out our site Scott! :wave: I can't imagine that anyone here would want to help with testing.... :D
