View Full Version : Does the clutch really make a difference?

I mean, obviously, when you go to take off from a standstill, you use it... but during actual shifting, you dont use the clutch. Pretty useless, and kind of stupid to spend money on a clutch pedal then? Or does using the clutch actually have a benefit? I don't think transmission damage is modelled in this game, or I'm pretty sure I would have ran into it by now.... heh.

You can turn off auto clutch, then the pedal is a must. Also if you've a G25 you have a 6 way shifter so the clutch makes sense.

Its more authentic for certain cars, I think the australian V8's and a lot of the street car mods will have manual (non-seqential) gearboxs.

I've hardly played gt legends but i believe almost nothing has seqential shift. Its all about how autentic an experience you want to have. I doubt it makes you faster.

If i had a G25 i'd use the 2 analouge paddles as clutchs anyway, and do the double clutch formula1 start. Thats about the only advantage I could think off.

so you can just turn off the clutch? you dont need to have a steering wheel with a clutch?

On simulation mode in the game "auto-clutch" is enabled by default, so you can use a joypad, keyboard or even a steering wheel without a clutch.

With GT Legends the only advantage to using the clutch is when pulling out of the pits or at the start of a race. Basically when you start from a complete stop it is nice.

But if you are asking this question because you are thinking about buying a G25, my opinion is it is very much worth it. I think that of all the sims I play on a regular basis GTL benefits the most from the G25. I find it feels so much more authentic using the clutch, H-Shifter and 900 degree steering. Not to mention the dual force feedback motors feel incredibly good.

Modern cars don't use gate shifters and 900 degrees of steering so using these option make games like GTR less realistic but for me it has added so much to GTL. Even though I don't have to use the clutch to shift in GTL I do. I'll just say the G25 does take a little getting used but there is more to it than just the clutch pedal. The 900 degrees of steering I think is the best feature. (At least as far as GTL is concerned)

Most modern cars, as in GTR use sequential or paddle shifters

oh ok cause i was thinking of getting the g25 becasue you "need" to use the clutch in the game, i thought that there was no way in turning off the clutch.
speaking of which, what other racing games for pc are there that use a clutch? or for the PS2?

No you wouldn't , because the paddles are not analog.. they are just on or off.

You were probably looking at the Thrustmaster RGT Pro 2. I used to use one. The 2 analog paddles are pretty handy though. I used one of them as a clutch for standing starts and it makes them much cleaner and quicker. Dare I say it but I think it's a bit better than the G25's clutch pedal for standing starts. The G25's clutch pedal seems to bite way too early for my liking, like really early; you only need to lift it a few mm's but the RGT's paddle bites around half travel. For shifting and what not the 3rd pedal on the G25 obviously wins over the RGT's paddles.

I have both of these wheels and that's what I think about them concerning the clutch. Hope this helps! :)

The way the f1 drivers used the 2 clutch paddles on the wheel (before launch control exsisted).

Hold 1 clutch leaver at the bite point, hold the other all the way down. When the lights go green drop the fully pulled leaver. The clutch will fall out to the bite point (where the other leaver is held) once the car has started moving drop the second clutch. From that point on use the sequential shift.
