Well first off, a few words about myself is in order I suppose. I'm 42, married with 2 children and have been simracing since Formula One by Psygnosis.
A lot has happened since I thought I could actually drive my own car with a vid-game controller! My first foray into simracing was SCGT shortly followed by GPL. I've been a lurker on MANY of the more popular forums for years but have never really thought I'd have much to contribute besides thank-yous to the mod makers.
Well onto the review as it were....First off, remove ANY existing Logitech drivers through control panel, then use regedit to remove any Logitech entries in your Registry. I had the old MOMO (Red) so my driver version was 4.60. Then after reboot and fresh defrag of the drives its off to install the new 5.0 drivers. Wait a minute,my driver disk is split in two! (As so many are..) A moment or two to recurse the Logitech site gives me the updated drivers for the G25, cool.
Upon installing the drivers, I'm prompted to plug this thing in and lo and behold it indicates that I actually am ready to go! Again pause a moment or two..lets check this thing in Control Panel! It shows a G25..Success! Check all the functions, it actually works! Well since we want to use the shifter in the F1 Seven Mod we go into the the .plr file for my favorite Driver and change the setting for a shifter from zero to one so that we have manual gear SELECTION.
Having saved our settings, its time to race! After loading and going to the in-game control settings we now have options to set our gears to buttons. We now program all our six gears (Plus Reverse) to the shifter. OK,drop a bunch of that throttle blip sort of stuff 'cuz we're a REAL driver, (After all ,our REAL car has a T-56 six-speed),and we're off at the Nordy! Yeah right off! Right off our mark since we don't have any of those fancy auto-gears with just you and the track and your Tachometer! Forget that Fancy Auto-matching of synchromesh since we've disabled that! Well this isn't how it is! No, it's how it WAS! Prepare for a bunch of disappointment when you compare how easy it was whacking shifter paddles w/ auto-blip to how it is NOW. This seperates the Men from the Boys. Heck, I'm lucky now to just finish let alone get a top-ten.But that's what it's about isn't it,as real as it can be?
OK,we've had our testes served back to us,let's try GPL then shall we? Fresh install of 1.2 D3D w/ Fred Faster's track updates and GPLEA cars through GEM 2.
(Don't forget to go to control panel, game devices and change the degrees of steering to 360-400)
Well this is actually an IMPROVEMENT! My immediate Kya times got quite a bit quicker. I actually feel different sorts of things than I had w/ my old Red,plus the shifter and clutch add a level of immersion not to be had with a standard MOMO.
Well in summing up,the words of Ferris come to mind.."If you have the means ,I HIGHLY recommend it!" I'd offer my old red MOMO up for sale, but since my Boy is a budding simracer I think I'll keep it for him.
Peace,
Flappy
