View Full Version : Can't play GTR2

Today I bought GTR2 as I have just bought a new PC and have fond memories of my GPL days back in the day.
Problem is I can't play the dam game. Installation is fine but as soon as I try and double click the launch icon things go down hill.
A compact disc icon appears as if the drive is accessing the cd and it sits for a while before then saying
"cd can't be authenticated within the time limit"
and refuses to go any further.
I have tried updating the chip software on my dvdrrw but it didn't help. Running in Windows 2000 mode didn't help either.
My machine is : Compaq 3500+ AMD 64 bit
1GB ram
160GB Hard drive
Nvidia 7600 GT 256mb graphics card
Windows XP media edition
HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GSA-H21N (cd drive model no.)
Graphics card has the latest drivers installed.
What's strange is this game runs on my dad's old compaq but his wouldn't be good enough to run it.
Now I know why I bought a Playstation 2 :(
If you could help I would be grateful as looking at the pictures on the game box isn't quite inspiring.

Try using the no-cd patch and see if it runs.

Well I installed the patch and everything is now firing up and ready to go. Can't thank you enough for fixing my problem and taking away a lot of stress.
Can't understand why it had this problem in the first place but if it runs I can live with that.
Thanks again for being prompt :)

I had the same thing and it turned out to be a microscopic hairline fracture in the DVD. So I had to go out and buy another copy, as the store refused to exchange it.
You couldn't see it on the surface but if you held the disk up to a light you could see a 2 tiny black lines extending out from the middle.

Do you have Windows Update set to install update automatically or do you install all critical updates from Windows Update regularly ?
There was an update recently that cause problem with some media protections. Check if you have update KB917422 installed. If yes, than install the fix KB924867 from here (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=9491B57B-F5C0-493B-8C3F-402026E01714&displaylang=en)

Hi all,
I have a problem similar to jockstar's. I insert GTR2 disk in the drive and the game doesn't even start loading, because an error message appears after the checking of the disk.
The disk has several very tiny strays coming from the center hole but this shouldn't be the cause as the disk/game runs perfectly in several other computers I have at home.
This problem occurred for the first time last Sunday afternoon and I had been playing GTR2 in multyplayer/Lan mode that very same morning, at which time that computer showed no error and worked flawlessly. I should add that I tried to load GTLegends after detecting this problem with GTR2 disk but the same occurred: after checking GTLegends disk an error message appeared. And the game did not load.
I tried using Microsft's hot fix kindly disclosed by Drapin to no avail.
I thought the problem could be related to the Ram memory and tested it (2 x 512Mb Kingston value ram on dual channel) with Memtest but both dimms passed all the tests successfully.
The computer is a Amd64 3700 on a Asrock 939sli32 motherboard, a x850pro 256mb video card, the DVD-RW drive being a LG (the reference of which I do not recall but it is about 2 years old and never gave me reasons for concern). This computer is used almost exclusively to play GTR, GTR2 and GTLegends.
I am puzzled and would appreciate any suggestion you could come up with. Shall I uninstall and re-install GTR2 (and GTLegends, by the way)?
I have the GTR2 no-CD file but never used it; on the other hand, is there a similar file for GTLegends?
Cheers.

Hi Ze
I can't help much but I would definately try the no-CD just to rule out the possibilty that the Security Protection hasn't become corrupted. Also I don't like to say this but I suspect not all the mods and addons we can download are made by sincere gamers, perhaps you have installed an unpleasant modification. My GTR2 curser gives me the V sign a lot these days so I now avoid anything that has an .exe, it's no guarantee but every little helps. A reinstall could sort out your problems but you'll have to backup the user files if you want to resume where you left off.
Good luck Ze
Let us know how everything turns out.

Hi guys!
Thank you for your replies.
It turned out to be a very odd issue: somehow, I don't know why, all 3 games (GTR, GTR2 + GTLegends) lost their video configurations.
I changed the DVD-RW drive but this was not the cause as the problem persisted. Only when I dchecked the video configuration and inserted the right parameters the games loaded again.
Cheers.
