After reading some of the negative comments about rFactor, I had my doubts about buying it but I couldn't pass up the price at Fry's so I just purchased a hard copy of the game.

I have not installed the game yet and I have some questions:

I've read that the latest v1250 patch has completely buggered the AI. I don't know if my disc is patched. If it's not, should I only install patch v1150 or do the bugs in v1250 only apply to poorly done mods?

So far, I have downloaded the GP79 mod (with cars and tracks) and the FIA GT Championship mod from rTracker. I don't know if all the cars and tracks are already in the FIA GT mod and I'm confused as to which mods require cars and tracks and which mods require no more additional downloads in order to work. The reason I ask this is because I see there are different downloads available at rFactor Central for the GP79 mod; Cars only & Tracks only.

And is rFactor as big of a PC hog as GTR2 or is it more cpu friendly?

Thanks in advance.

It's CPU friendly, but lots of mods are crap. Ask around before downloading a mod. I still run 1.150, it's good. But don't expect it to be like GTR2.

It's still a great game, Open-Wheel mods are all great.

I agree on Open Wheel Mods for rFactor... toyota Atlantics, Fomula BMW, Fsone... really if you have GTR2 the only point of gefting the FIA mod is online I think ... as you won't have better physics with rFactor. You'll need more tracks than the ones provided with the game.. just spend some time hanging around in rFactorcentral and read what people say. Maybe a good start is the Hall of Fame.
Lowndes... talking about crap.. did you try the recently released stinker cup? http://www.rfactorcentral.com/detail.cfm?ID=Stinker%20Cup

Is it fun, crazy, crap?... looking forward to seeing snowy pictures of this one...

It depends on the mod. I recently tested a few mods at the same track with 35 AI (back of grid) I get

V8 mod - 40 fps
ISI NSR - 32 fps
ISI SR GP - 34 fps
PCC - 25 fps
Formula BMW - 22 fps

Comparison to GTR2 may depend on your spec and the resolution you run at but in GTR2 with 35 AI (back of grid) I get similar fps to ISI SR GP.

if you have GTR2 the only point of gefting the FIA mod is online I think

Even then the FIA mod is dying in rFactor - I checked tonight and there were just 24 in the lobby spread over 5 servers racing this mod. Of course this is European peak time - in the US it may be different - certainly the GTR2 lobby wont have the hundreds racing it does at peak European times.

Thanks for your replies.

I only play offline for now. I'm afraid if I did race online I wouldn't make too many friends since I drive like a maniac.:p

I love GTR2 and thought that maybe the FIA GT mod was a bit different. But if it's just a cheap imitation of GTR2 then I'll stick with the original for my GT racing needs.

Open wheel is definitely an interest. I loved playing F1Challenge but I can't get a high resolution for it now through my HDTV so if rFactor can fill that void then great!:)

What is the best modern day F1 mod right now? I've read that the AI for most of the F1 mods are poorly done; smaller teams qualifying and finishing at the front. WTF?

And is rFactor Central the main site for downloads? And if a mod requires cars and tracks as a separate download, will it usually say so?

One more thing,
I also just picked up GTL, which I haven't installed yet either. Should I also stay away from cheap imitation rFactor mods for classic GT racing as well and just stick with GTL?

Thanks again.

Yes rFactorCentral is the main site for "legal" downloads... I see you already know rTracker...
The other point in having Fia GT mod is maybe that nice little Alfa 8c...

You'll recognise a lot of the circuits and the people who converted them. There has been a lot of cross fertilisation! Install rFactor several times, I now have 4 installs! One was accidental, the others quite deliberate one is my original v1150 with every mod under the sun, it takes an age to load! The others share the location folder of the first but I have open wheelers in one and tintops in another and my accidental one is pure Nascar! The advantage of this is mainly felt in how long it takes to start up but you can also have the controls and video settings just about where you need them. And you get to keep the v1150 just in case it is better though I don't no that it is. And there are one or two very useful additions like the spotter and the quit gui with v1250

Anything by Team IDT  they are the nuts :roflmao:

Formula Atlantics is my favourite :D

FSONE is awesome and you can get 2007 liveries :roflmao: :roflmao:
The AI is arse upwards though with every F1 mod, I think it's a perverse game that all the modders are in on

few newb questions from me: how to change time of day and weather, like in gtl/gtr/gtr2?

It took me ages to find this. I can't say I find it very intuitive :)

Customise - Settings - Advanced Rules - race start time
