Here's a quick poll for you...

I know some of you follow Nascar but for those who don't here's a recap of last week's Martinsville race.

Jimmie Johnson is leading with a few laps to go. In second is his teammate Jeff Gordon. Martinsville is a short track. Gordon is on Johnson's bumber. He can't get around him because Johnson is blocking the heck out of him.

Gordon radios the owner and requests permission to wreck Johnson as this is the only way he can get by him. Owner says No!

Gordon finishes in second but is pissed at the results and wishes he could have wrecked his teammate for the win.

Montoya ran into a similar problem in Mexico a few weeks ago but he went ahead and wrecked his teammate...and eventually won the race.

So...racing community would you wreck your teammate.

I wouldn't unless it was the last race of the year and the championship was on the line.

Gordon actually owns Johnson's car and didn't want to wreck his own car. And Montoya did wreck his teammate, but he did it in a very lousy way even though he did deserve to win in Mexico.

I think the way Gordon raced Johnson was correct but he needed to start the serious shoving 3 or 4 laps before he did. But a shove is all he would to his teammate. He wouldn't wreck him.

Wrecking is not racing!!!!!
In my opinion, the best races are the ones that go green the whole way!!! :p

All right, I run into this dilemma in video games alot.

I would wreck my teammate only if he wrecked me.(final lap or cup)
I would wreck anyone else who also got in my way.

I wouldn't wreck my teamate for a win, But I would wreck him for the cup.

It's how I roll:D

This is interesting... I don't know nothing in Nascar but did Montoya really wrecked the guy on purpose or was it a mistake? (ok maybe I'm too naive).
Anyway there are so many things involved here and so much money... this story of the guy asking the car owner the authorization of wrecking the other car is incredible!! The problem (and there are such problems in F1 too) is to know if motorsports is team sports or individual sports... From what I heard (well ok.. it was in Ricky Bobby lol) the drafting is important in Nascar and some teammates use this... so this would be a sports team (not even talking of all the technicians working on the cars and the strategy). But the pilots are often really strong egocentric individuals (Yes Juan Pablo you know it's you... ) that those things will allways happen.
In Formula one it is forbidden for a team to give instructions to the pilot to force them to change the results... but they often do it (Rubens and Michael know this). This is also because the constructor's championship is really important in terms of money gained by the teams.
Personnaly I would not wreck my teammate... but maybe I'm too french... in France we allways quote de Coubertin who said that "the important part is not to win, but to participate"
After hearing Ricky Bobby's motto "if you ain't first you're last" I understand this is totally different way of seeing things... But I know is just a stereotyped movie character...

Team manager decides depending on championship position, driver does what he is told! i don't know about NASCAR but team sport first, driver championship second.

In NASCAR, their are no team orders. NEVER HAS, NEVER WILL!! It's basically wreckers or checkers (Flag). It's ever man for them selfs basically.:) :D

I saw both the Mexico And Martinsville races. I was hoping both gordon and johnson would wreck each other & montoya did force the issue, but I believe it was an accident.

I think this is the best answer of all. Kinda like the Golden Rule applied to racing. Yeah mistakes happen....like a part failure. But WE have control of the gas pedal and the brake and the steering wheel. TBH that was the best race I have seen a Matinsville, in a while. And yes as Xanax said..it was Jeff's car, and his team mate. He had a vested (cash) interest in that car. There are several drivers in any series ,that would choose not to wreck period. AND then there is every one else. I think that the many (wreckers) out weigh the few(class acts).

Personally, I would stuff it in a fence first, before I hit you, if at all possible.
That's the way I roll, with honor and dignity.

I think part of the reason why they still speak to each other is that Nicky finally won the championship... I guess he could have been REALLY mad at Dani if he had not.
I also think Hayden will never be champion again. At least I hope so. But once again if motorbikes had 2 more wheels it would be much better in my opinion. :D

I like Phil's first answer...almost.

Do unto others as you would have done unto you.

So it's not "Would he wreck me? If I think so then I'll get him."

Rather, it's "Would I want him to wreck me? Obviously no, so I won't wreck him."

If I understand the rules, blocking for position is allowed, so I may (but prolly not.

Wrecking anyone, any time on purpose I would never do.

Interesting thread! Thx.

P.S. We're expected to be gentlemen here at NoGrip, and I like it that way! Can we leave the sex for another site, please.

To add another dimension to my opinion on wrecking somebody, I must say that my decision to do it would also be affected by what kind of car (or anything) I was racing. In the case of GTR2.... we are racing sportscars!!!! You don't wreck sportscars: end of story. Motorcycles, hell no. F1, hell no. But if I was racing NASCAR I think that i might consider wrecking somebody because the car itself doesn't mean a damn thing to me.

For instance, if you are going to be competing in a real life vintage sportscar event, the thought of wrecking somebody is pure blasphemy. From what I've heard, even if you accidentally wreck at an event like that, you can be banned from competing for a few years depending on the incident because the cars that you are racing are priceless relics that CANNOT be replaced.

There are two series that I follow in the States that are very strict when it comes to contact in the race. In the ALMS and the Rolex Series, if contact is viewed as avoidable by the officials then they have to spend time in a penalty box. NASCAR doesn't do a damn thing when people wreck into each other.

.... If every race went green the whole distance I would be a lot happier. And I further what rasfigjohn quoted: we allways quote de Coubertin who said that "the important part is not to win, but to participate" ..... I believe in that too.

Well in Nascar they do review an accident. If a driver gets into more than one wreck, they first warn him. Then a second time they have the driver serve a penalty depending on the incident, like say wrecking another driver an purpose, you get penalized 1 or 2 laps. if penalized a third time, you are disqualified from the race. Nascar officials take no bull.

why would he be pissed for not getting the win because he can't make a clean pass...? he had the whole race to do it... is he actually gonna be proud of a win where he had to intentionally wreck someone...?

to me, it don't matter how prestigious a race is or how much is on the line, there should be no circumstance where someone is allowed to intentionally take out another vehicle just to take a win... if a top driver can't get a win because he can't make a clean pass, then tough luck... i don't know the rules of Nascar, but who the hell does he think he is to give him the right to intentionally take out someone... yes, there is still the matter of team orders, but if that's the case, a team manager can always tell the other driver to move out of the way...

Too me, this is too weak. If the driver makes avoidable contact resulting in a wreck, the first occurance should be penalized.

As for the original question, you should never wreck your teammate.

hmmm would I Wreck a teamie or anyone for that matter for a win.....

No....However..I will move another car out of the way for a win......Big Difference.....

as far as the 2 examples given......Montoya's doesn't Qualify..as I see that as an Over-ambitious Move........not a case of, "I've got to get him out of the way"......

Jeffy and Jimmie....is a case where hitting him harder was a good idea that Jeffy just didn't pursue.....Jeff was Faster then Jimmie and Jimmie was blocking like Crazy.......

I find it funny that people bitch and moan about moving people out of the way in racing today.....Yet a Vast majority of these people were the ones Cheering When Dale Sr. ran up on someone and tried to "rattle their cage"....

Jonny683
12 April 07, 22:07
I agree with you Fitch.

In the movie, "Days Of Thunder" Harry tells cole, "Son, he Didn't hit you, he rubed ya', and son, rubins' racing!" I think thats how it goes.

It's always exciting too see two or more cars racing an hitting each other for the win. It's both funy and exciting when both those guys wreck each other and who ever is third gets the win.:roflmao:
