I'm looking forward to see how this thread turns out. I know we have a few budding and almost fully fledged track editors in the crew. I'm looking to join them!
For an interesting read of a track-from-scratch creation, check out the history of the Top Gear Test Track (Currently for GTR2)
First post was August 2006, and it takes some reading (250 posts), but it's interesting to see the development and input from many people over 6 months (to date) (http://forum.rscnet.org/showthread.php?t=262080)
Collaboration! :)
Isn't that track done yet? I seemto recall that thread being 4.5 months bickering and 1.5 months collaboration.. :P

Well, it was RSC. If NG did a track I'm sure we'd have it ready for public release in a month. ;)

What are you using to develop the tracks? There's a couple I'd like to make in my spare time.

Hey Paul!, Im Using 3dMax8, 3Dsimed(Dave Noonans Editor), Ge_Editor and have just purchased Bobs Track Builder Pro.
I have used Max for the past Decade, so im very used to its quirks, my first track that i started last March was all completed in 3D max, I used the Lofting Technique for the Main Track, and other Techniques for the Landscape and Infield areas, along with building many objects, that im still doing!...:(
But it almost finished, so i will be releasing a Beta version in the next week or so for rfactor and GTL.
As for other tracks, i have really got into BTB, and will definately be using for future tracks as its very easy to test and modify as you refine it, i Highly recommend it if you are serious about track building!
Hope that helps.

I'm maybe being lazy, but this thread is all about helping people into the trade.
Any links to where we can get these tools Analog? No doubt some will be crippleware demos unless you have the cash, but some may not be.

3D Studio Max_Payware, but its an Industry Standard Software so its a little expensive!
Download free Version for a month:http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112&id=5972446
3DSimed_Dave Noonans Editor: Allows for direct import of many of the latest Sim Formats, also has tools for export to different formats for conversion ect ect...A MUST BUY!
Here: http://www.sim-garage.co.uk/
GEditor_ Freeware, allows for Mas file input and modifaction of GMT files.
Here: http://www.bhmotorsports.com (very slow for me?)
Bobs Track Builder, allows creation of a main Track and Grass verges, then a direct Export to rfactor, which can then be converted to GTL & GTR2
Here's the Demo version Link: http://bobstrackbuilder.net/demo/demo.aspx
Also a good Paint Program such as Photoshop (The Best) or Paint Shop Pro would be good for manipulating Photo's for Texture Maps.
PaintShop Pro 9 Demo: http://www.download.com/Paint-Shop-Pro/3000-2192_4-10001995.html
DDS Plugin for Photoshop & PaintShop: http://developer.nvidia.com/object/nv_texture_tools.html
Hope this Helps. ;)
