I am in big trouble, it seems that my internet connection is absolute shit to play on-line with it, it is 256 kb download and also 256 kb upload cabel connection.
i am continuously getting lost connection all the time now when i try to race on-line, and i am fed up with it! Out of the last 4 Tournament race in RPM i got lost connection and no result in 3 of them...

The shitty thing is, that here in the Ukraine where i am working (Mukachevo), there is only 1 internet provider, and this is the max line what they can offer, so it is impossible to get better from them, and there is no alternative provider in the town.

Does anybody has an idea if there is ANY alternative way that i can get a higher speed internet in this shitty town?
Maybe independent satellite connection from another country, i dont know if these things are even existing or not, just at the moment i am so much down and desperately want to race, that i would do ANYTHING which human mind can think about, to get a higher speed connection.

Please, if any of you have any ideas, share with me, i am open for anything right now...

Thanks a lot in advance: Neo

I do know you don't want satellite internet. I had it for about 3 months once. The lag is so bad, online gaming is impossible.I really don't think internet speed is your problem as is your quality of connection. Are you running a router, maybe firewall problems. Lots of variables can cause internet connections problems, not only internet speed.

Yep, for gaming, you dont want a satellite internet connection. For continuous data transmission there is no problem, but for gaming where you are interacting with an incoming data stream, the delay coming from transmitting up to the satellite and then back down again is unusable. the ping is unavoidably high due to the signal bounce lag.

We had satellite high speed internet at our office here in Alaska a few years ago and it was fine for business, but lag on games was impossible. Now with DSL here and at home, life is fine.

Hmm 256k upload works good, but I think the download speed is holding you. Or maybe the connection is just very very weak.. And what's your lagtime? So the ping.

Here in the Netherlands I have a very cheap connection, which is 1500kbps down and 256 up, and ping is around 20ms. (It's DSL). €20,- a month, without download or uploadlimits.

Therefore I know 256k up is enough.

As the others say, satellite really doesn't work. Only with watching television you are 2secs behind on cable television.
Cable is not possible here, because I live outside the village in the middle of nowhere.

Neo...try to make sure your pc is optimized for maximum transmission units, AKA MTU's the max rate is 1500(for your ethernet card) There are tons of free internet optimization programs....look around. Plus, you need to reset you modem occaisionally, and check your working programs to make sure nothing is hogging the bandwidth. 256 up is a tad slow, but steady enough to run this game. If you are running through an additional router AFTER the cable modem, that could slow ya down too. There are speed checking programs too that will verify your actual speed attained. Good luck. The satellite link adds about 7/10ths of a sec delay in both directions, which is no good for gaming.

Phil

the upload speed is important for the response TO the server.

Most ethernet cards can do 100mbps, so megabits. Around 12MegaBytes..
1500MTU is right, but that also shouldn';t be a problem for a good router and ethernetcard..
256kbps really isn't a problem for GTL at least, and in my opinion those internet optimization programs really don't do anything. And my modem/router has never been reset, but some bad cheap brands you have to reset..

My download speed has always been the same, just like upload.

Download is always 160kB/s (1300kbps), and upload 27kB/s(210kbps), but that has to do with overhead. Maybe it's because we in the Netherlands have a very stable network, that I never have a problem.

I use a Belkin wireless modem/router, but my game pc is connected with wire..

BTw, for viewing the ping:

Start -> Run
Type: 'command' -> Enter

ping <website>
like:
ping www.nogripracing.com

Although there's a huge difference between servers.

Like Dutch servers like www.techzine.nl I got a ping of 13ms.
And and English one for example www.nogripracing.com is 126ms

Thanks guys for the lot of advice tips.
I dont have a modem, this comes as DSL cable.
My ping is from sometimes 50 to 200 ms, connection is very stable, also speed is at 1 second 240 kb/sec, the other only 110, or even 60.... so it is just shit in one word.

I run regularly Spybot, so i hope no any spyware is eating my bandwidth.

Anyhow, thanks for the great useful infos, especially about the satellite connection lag, i did not know that.
Just now i am really totally lost faith, what can i do....

also make sure you have the latest firmware for the modem/router, ethernet drivers, and not all routers come with 1500mtu as default.

Hey Neo, I noticed on the pic of your desktop you have alot of programs running in the System Tray, if you have all these running while playing online they could definately be causing problems. I also noticed you have Nortons:eek: which would probably be a problem if you left it running while gaming. If you haven't tried yet, turn off all unnecesary programs when playing online, and maybe try giving GTR2 high priority in Task Manager. ;)

Thanks for the tips Freddy, appreciate it.
Norton i usualy turn it off for playing, but it does not have any influence as i experienced, even if it is turned off i got lost connections and lag all the time...

Neo, sounds to me like your just on a shitty part of the network. ie, your connection goes from your house to a router along with everyone else in the nieghbourhood, and that router's uplink (fiber, co-ax, microwave,...) is not quite fast enough for the load.

try it at an "off peak" time (middle of the night or something) if its fine, there's your answer.

I think thats not an issue, the provider is in my neighbour, actually the server room is just on the other side of the wall of my living room, so i have a direct cable from there to my PC....

hmmmm, maybe i should drill a hole and hack it.... :)

Maybe you could hack into the server and disconnect all other users when you want to play online. ;) :p
