Registered on the EA forums to ask this question, only to discover that today is the day they shut it down
I'm thinking of getting Shift 2, but I can only play it on keyboard. Yes, I know I should get a steering wheel and I'd love to one day, but being a university student in a foreign country I can just about afford the game itself. I'm used to games like GTR Evo and F1 2011, which work quite well with the keyboard. Then I tried Race Driver GRID, and luckily the damage model is amazing because I spent the entire time going from one tyre wall to the other. It was absolutely impossible, the car felt like it was on ice and the steering was either 100% or nothing. How is Shift, or Shift 2, on the keyboard? Will t be worth getting it? Am downloading the demo now, but my internet is shit and it's taking forever. Thanks guys |

2 Words... very difficult. A game pad makes it more bearable but a wheel and peddle set is the best.

I found it easy enough, just make sure you set acceleration and brake inputs to 100% sensitivity, that way you can be more precise with car placement.

If you're really using keyboard, just turn on Steering Assist. The response has too much delay that every steer is sometimes twitchy.

For race, you will need steering assist, like shoichikarasuma said. otherwise your car will likely spinning out of control
as for drift... i don't think you can play it with the keyboard. i've tried it myself and the result is not even drift |

Just get an Xbox pad. It's the basic method of sideways action for Shift 2. Only get a wheel if you are trying to get decent times.
Personally I use a Razer Onza, but then I can't afford a wheel atm. |

You can also use keyboard for drifting. You just need to learn how to master it. I can even drift with keyboards + Manual Gear on some tracks like Irwindale, Nevada, London Millenium, or Miami. Plus, gamepads and keyboards are mostly used by users on the Autolog list.

A bit off topic.
I got a bad feeling about this. If they are closing the Offical NFS forums, There may not be a next NFS title. Guess they got sick of people complaining about stuff that the customer will never again see such as LAN Multi-Player. RIP NFS Franchise. |

well this topic is dead buy I'll reply anyway and say that an x360 pad should work the best for your budget. You can get a 3rd party one from amazon for like $15. I started w/keyboard and you'll definitely want steering and stability assist kept on. With the pad I could take off steering assist, still need stability assist but it's probably just me. Like you, a $200 wheel and pedal kit is just not in the budget, won't be for a long time. I started to really get far in the game with the pad and the analog controls. was getting nowhere fast with the keyboard.

@OP: Drivable but you have to stick to the cars that drive better then others and also maybe stay away from works cars (unless you spend time on working on set-ups)
[Not that that is much different with pad or wheel if you prefer precicion driving to some extent] The controls itself work as if it controls an analog axis with time and yaw based parameters. Unlike analog you can't adjust almost anything though unfortunately (probably speed sensitivity will help the most as it reduces the steering input based on speed but still allows countersteering at yaw) . Can't adjust digital brake / throttle input, so you can't make them slower to go to 100% pressure. Triggering steering (like in say GT4) won't work out that good, while it works out better then in some other games, the cars itself won't like it much. Triggering brake and throttle obviously kinda works (and in any car or pad, wheel) but I dunno if one can get used to it or if it's better then to use driving aids. Quote:
