Default Stuttering FPS problem

Been having a problem that I thought I had cured but apparently not. I get slide show like frame rates on tracks for 3-5 seconds then it goes back to normal. Usually it will happen twice per lap and at different spots on the track from lap to lap.

Was having this problem on an install of rFactor Lite and had read that might be the problem so I did a full, clean install and still the same thing. Had the problem with the Indycar mod, GPC79 and Formula Nippon mods.

Reinstalled DX9 and I thought that had taken care of it. Vid card doesn't seem to be getting excessively hot or anything but I will clean it out with some compressed air tomorrow. I had rFactor installed for a good long time before doing this clean up and never had this problem and this is the same rig I have always had it on. Cleaned out the registry and everything too before reinstalling it this time.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated because at this time Rfactor is unusable doing this.

Thanks

Post your system specs please, including graphics settings of your video card driver (AA, AF, vsync, etc.).

Did you by any chance backup any of your .PLR files or even a config.ini? If you could find one or other or both you may find some useful information. Perhaps even use those files in your new install.

Specs:

WinXP SP3, AMD 3200+CPU, 2 GB PC3200 RAM, ATI X850XT PE Pci-e GFX Card, Audigy 2 sound card, Asrock Dual MoBo

Not a monster by any means anymore but but I have played rFactor on it for 3 years without problems.

@Snowy, yes I did back up my .plr file but when I inserted it in to the new install it would not give me a menu- probably because the last mod I played was not in the new install yet I think, and I didn't know how to manually change it properly.

Have you changed or updated graphics drivers lately? And do you get the same problem with other games or sims?

Is your processor a Dual or Hyperthreaded processor? If so try the +fullproc command option.
If that doesn't work, change your "Frames Rendered ahead" to zero, on the graphics card. ATi calls it something else but it means the same thing.

@Freddy- No and no. No changes other than uninstalling in order to pare down my install to mods I actually use and/or can't get for GTR2 (which works fine incidentally)

@Painless: No just an old single core- no money to upgrade now since the lay-off- I will look for that command in ATI Tools.

I'm going to take the card out for a good cleaning as well, I am wondering if it might be a little overheating as it seem to not start until I have been playing for a little while.

What I wanted to do is actually make several rFlite installs for different types of mods i.e. open wheel, GT, Touring etc. with one install holding all the tracks. Any of you do this? Does it work ok?

I'll keep you informed and let me know if you think of any other ideas.

Thanks a lot!!!

@ Painless - It's called the Flip Que Size in ATI cards.

Also, montoyafan, have you tried clearing your replays? LittleZippy had this problem a little while back, and that solved it, in GTR2.

Correct, it's flip que size, and it was already set to zero. I was using the in game app to set AA and AF and changed back to using ATI Tools to do it AA 2x and AF 2x. Just ran some laps at the same track with the same car and after 3 laps had no stutters.

So I am wondering if it is either a heat issue or a driver issue. Still have not taken the card out to blow the dust off yet but that's next.

Don't think the issue is sorted quite yet, just hasn't popped it's ugly head up today.

I will clear my replays although this was a clean, new install so didn't have many replays to clear other than test runs after each mods was put it to test it.

Thanks for all the help so far

I have 4 rFactor installs. My main install holds most mods, I have a second install just for the Historix Mod, a third for the Historix beta mod (i'm a beta tester for them) and a forth for other vintage mods. The main install holds all the tracks for the other three.

After you install a second or third rFactor, open up the config.ini and look for this line:

TracksDir=GAMEDATA\LOCATIONS\

and change it to:

TracksDir=C:\PROGRAM FILES\RFACTOR\GAMEDATA\LOCATIONS\

Just making sure you type the correct path to the actual tracks folder.

Thanks for the heads-up Siggs. I have always owned Nvidia cards, and could't remember the ATi name for it.

Just for snicks, look in your PLR for Low Detail UI="0". The default is 1, change it to 0. I remember having a stuttering issue long ago with Lienz and changing that value solved the problem.

I just revived this thread to say that this solved my stuttering problem in Windows 8 Release Preview.
