This year is going to be a banner year for simulation racing.
I'm enjoying everything out there so far...pre-alphas, betas, you name it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ER268...ature=youtu.be Last edited by DoubleT; 17 June 12 at 22:27. |

Hi guys - I couldn't think of a better place to post this, so sorry if it's slightly off topic.
When watching cars with a manual gearchange (like the historic F1 cars) - there seems to be a slight lag between the rev counter/engine sound change and the hand moving the gear-lever. It's easier to spot with the sound turned off. Rev counter flicks which indicates the next gear is engaged then the hand moves the lever. |

I hope that for alders cars that required clutch shifts, they can use the clutch as a point to move the hands forward, so the delay would be slightly less. ps: need to remind myself to ask/post this on WMD forum

In more ways than one. You did 2:10:xx for the 2nd lap (fast lap, may we assume?). This with a Pagani Zonda R, capable of producing 750 hp. Years ago, in RL, Fabrizio Gollin did a 2:15:xx with a Ferrari 550 GTS M with its 600+ hp. Weight differences aside, assuming the track representation is accurate (no reason to believe otherwise), if the faster (with proper technique) drivers are doing around 2:10 with the Pagani Zonda R, I'd say this looks very, very promising (in spite of the LoadSens thing). Harder therefore to understand why some are labelling CARS as arcade. Above, from 3:16 to 5:39, during a FIA GT 2008 race at Spa. The pilot does lock up at the Chicane, but manages a respectable lap (with the lock up). EDIT: just remembered, F. Gollin did those 2:15:xx on the old Spa layout. So, it is literally the time delay between the physics of the car responding and the animation graphically responding? It does seem to be a long delay.

the game (physics) reacts instantly to your moving the shifter (or paddle), by changing gears (within allowed time, older cars change slower than modern cars with paddles for example). But it is only the starting point for the animation, hence you will always be at least a little to late, because you do not know when a player will shift. Some games try to help it a little by a very quick animation, but that mostly looks silly. Others by moving the hand forward when you reach certain rpm, but that will look silly because often while cornering you reach high rpm, but you do not switch gears and you get a hand constantly moving toward s the shifter and back again. Regarding this game, some cars also still have temperary shifting animation, as they have not been done (placeholders/1t pass). |

Too good not to share -- very earliest and therefore quite buggy -- implementation of new clouds system. This is the first time it's been in a build but you can see from the get-go how it'll be in a year's time:
Worth remembering too how eventually cloud cover on track will affect temperature on that part of the track and therefore affect grip etc....to say nothing about the full monty rain and other associated work done with the help of a meteorologist. Will be fun! Last edited by redi; 17 July 12 at 19:23. Reason: Fixed YouTube link |

Some effects (both visual and audio) were from non-game sources, this is just something cinematic he put together. Still really fun to watch. Enjoy |

I have to say watching that it looks very convincing. That point between having grip and not having it looks believable. A bit of a buttock clench through Eau Rouge, some corners even as you went in, my brain was saying 'he'll get understeer on the exit' and you did.... (try different lines
).

It depends on the car, and the transition from grip to no grip and back still has some wrinkles to iron out and is on the list of things to solve.

If only I had the time to drive a sim these days! This looks like it would be a real treat (rF2 equally so, as far as I can see) - five years ago if someone showed us this everyone would be totally blown away.

Well rF2 is scheduled for the end of this year or so and pCARS for mid-2013, so you have some time still to plan free time for those
Don't forget Assetto Corsa, also probably late 2012. Priorities, priorities

Nice videos, thanks everyone for sharing. Having them all in one place is convenient. I hope this sim turns out to be great, it appears to be headed that way.
In fact I hope that all of these upcoming sims do well, competition is a good thing and pushes our hobby forward. |

I sure hope the sounds get propper attention (too much obsession with graphics for now). Placeholders or not (and WIP or not), it's all sounding pretty weak, dry and artificial (and still that horrid trans-whine from NFS-Shift *argh*) and stand out as the weakest part of the sim right now.
![]() I can also perceive from videos that the throtle reacts to sound almost like an ON/OFF switcher? (NFS-Shift heritage, perhaps?). |

They're working on some new sound tech, I think they pushed the existing sound tech as far as it can go. All the balancing stuff will be done later and there will be control sliders so each person can tune sounds as they see fit (turbo, engine, wind, crowd, tyre scrub....)
Here's one from me from build296 (sorry about the off-track, the baby started tugging on my G27 wires, had to "kick" her away ).FFB really came around this build, more to come in the future. |

![]() Everything that makes sound interesting is still not in there (cracks, pops, proper reverb etc.), and with a 2-man team progress will take its time. And no such thing as 'too much obsession with graphics' either, it happens to be the only thing in the game currently that comes with regular updates and hence is most advanced at this time Everything else is basically developed behind the scenes ATM.

Vegetation in RL is darker, there're brownish patches in many parts.
Other than that, great work by SMS. Impressive. |
