There can still be accusations of unequal equipment and a case can be made for it at the current games in many sports eg cycling, rowing, track & field and swimming (tho not so much since they changed the rules about costumes).
Take cycling for example, many countries are using different kinds of bikes to gain a competitive edge over their rivals, if the Olympics was truly about human achievement than the IOC or what ever that particular sports governing body is should specify what equipment is to be used and supply it to each competitor in parc ferme type setup.
SearleD I agree with your sentiment, it's one of the many reasons I hate that equestrian events are in the Olympics (another is I find it bat shit boring), however given that they allow other sports where equipment is just as likely to determine the winner I don not see why go Karting shouldn't be allowed as an Olympic sport and think of all the extra sponsorship money they could get by plastering the karts and drivers with logos. I am getting very cynical about the Olympics the older I get.
