A lot of games out there let you earn money in races which you then use to build up your current car or buy another, but the only ones I've seen are like Shift, where it's mostly modern cars with a few classics thrown in and fairly generic mods.
Those are great, but are there any street racing games out there, where you start off with an older beater or showroom econobox and slowly build yourself up going through the ranks of anything goes racing down backroads and city streets? Not so much the old NFS series which had a bunch of trust-fund baby cars (Mercedes, Lambos, Porsches), but something grittier with those old want-ad cars that my buddies and I used to race down back roads in the day and city streets and highways at night. Disposable Novas, mom's grocery getter or dad's station wagon, that kinda racing where you buy in and winner takes all. |

Motor City Online was about the only thing like that but it was online only, no offine play. Flatout is a fun arcade series with "generic" old cars racing on dirt and paved roads. I only ran Flatout Ultimate Carnage and it was a blast especially with my buttkicker.

Maybe NFS Underground 1&2? You can drive a Civic for the whole game...
Gran Turismo also lets you drive shitty cars in the beginning. But the racing feels much more serious than back roads. |

Tokyo extreme Racer 2/ Tokyo Highway Challenge 2 depending on where you are. Best street racing/tuning game I've ever played... of course it does require you to own a Dreamcast! :p

If you're more into mountain pass races try Tokyo Xtreme Racer Drift 2 (known also as Kaido Battle in Japan). Also, if you have a Playstation 2, Tokyo Xtreme Racer Zero is perfect (in my opinion).

I had Motor City Online and it was fun till people figured out how to cheat and then it just fell apart after that. That's kinda what I'm looking for. I heard there was an unofficial "offline" version, but it was built on an old NFS platform and you had to have that game (or at least, some files from it) to play.

I'll look into Underground, thanks. I had Gran Turismo 2 on PS, but I'm a PC gamer myself. Never got into consoles (that Playstation was my last one and, incidentally, it still works!)
