NTFS junctions work fine with Windows XP, they're very simple to create.
For XP, iirc, you need to download linkd from MS, probably still available from Resource Kit (dunno the version).

I got Link Shell Extension
to work great so that the mirrored folder kept all the files even if the files and folders in the source folder was deleted which is what happens when you recover the system partition.
However after some time I noticed that it stopped working for no reason and I kept messing with it and uninstalled and reinstalled it a couple of times with no success. I finally gave up and started to look for alternative by googling around
Then I found someting called Mirrorfolder that really does the job.
It wasn't free but it sure was worth the US $39.00.
