Hi guys,
thanks for reading. I want/need a second PC. A laptop would probably be best but I'm not fussy. My 11 yr old Godson has no computer. His mum has even less money than I do. His father is mostly absent and self-centred. I would like to buy a machine for him to use for schoolwork, web access, and a few games. It doesn't need to be fancy, it just needs to be good enough to run GTR2 or rFactor. If it can run either of those it will run his school software, and allow us to network. If anyone can help I will be most obliged. AG |

Is there a budget involved? I already have a cpu and a graphics card kicking around, I could possibly help put one together if you needed. Or just advise

Unfortunately there is, basically it's about one monthsworth of my DLA give or take a bit. As inexpensive as can be made possible.
edited to add I would be happy to pay more if installments would be acceptable. Last edited by CX650; 27 October 12 at 00:02. Reason: addition |

![]() I always helping out locals were I can. I would go for a tower, sure he won't have portability but with a 11 year old maybe that is not a bad thing. If not for the simming I would say a laptop. AMD dualcore +4200-+6000, 1GB video , 2Gb Ram , 500GB, oem DVD virtually any monitor and a set of headphones not to bug family onlining with you . ![]() If I was close I give you, a 4890 O/C , SBLive (stereo) and worn 500GB /DVD have some old midi towers..... cost more then worth in freight. Haha, that's a coincidence actually Durge, the spare card I have JUST HAPPENS to be a sapphire 4890!
The processor is a Phenom II x2 550.I'm busy over the weekend, but I can take a look during next week at some budget components to tie it all together possibly a micro atx case if it's not any extra £, it'd be a little more compact thenWhile you're here durge, what're your thoughts on using a laptop hdd in a cage as storage for such a PC? I mean, I ahve a 500Gb 2.5 going spare as well. |

It looks like a plan has crystallized. The idea of gathering parts to build one for him seems the way to go. I am very grateful for the support.

Ok... first off your a good man CX, got to be said coz it`s true (even when you do turn my screens into links lol
) Anyhow I`ve come a bit late to this thread so sounds like things are coming together for you and therefor the lad, as has been said, good thoughtful community here. I`m not at home right now but I know I have 2 GB`s of ram lying around and a +4200 CPU and maybe even some other bits `n` bobs too, can`t remember but if anything I have is still needed I can let you have them for the price of postage... If you have what`s needed then that`s cool. Pity there`s not more like you CX... grumpy old git or not ![]()

I have an AMD X2 4200 going spare, and can probably lay my hands on a mobo to suit if my pc guy has not thrown my old one away, which he probably has not. There would be a case involved too.....

I also have various bits dotted around, including some speakers.
It sounds like you are sorted to a better spec than I can do. But if the list is missing some parts post it here and it sounds like someone will have then. I have speakers, a small flat screen, graphics cards various cables etc. My speakers BTW were surplus to needs and did stop working, I have never bothered to find out why - it may only be the power unit. Happy to send anything you may need. P.S. sorry for being vague on the specs but I have stuff stored away in boxes 'just in case' from older builds I don't really know what I have off the top of my head. But I can dig through if you have any specifics missing Last edited by Roger; 1 November 12 at 09:13. |

I have received a PM from a member who wishes to remain anonymous. This kind person offered a cash donation to help with the build.
Appropriately edited here is a copy of my reply. "please excuse my delay in answering, I was overwhelmed by your offer and couldn't think of what to write. As you will note, the problem is not one of cash. Banger has assembled a machine from used parts. It requires some accessories but should function. Sadly it fails to boot. We need technical assistance to find out why. I am very grateful for your care and interest. Your generosity is outstanding. Your preference to remain anonymous is noble. I shall be sure to give your greetings to the boy. I must politely decline your donation at this time as I feel it would be disrespectful of your intent if I accepted. Thank you very much, I hope you understand my reasoning. Best wishes, CX650" |

What's happening during the (not) boot time...any beep codes? Does the power supply exceed the min necessary to power everything? RAM in the wrong slots? Can you access the BIOS?

Create a Puppy CD (http://puppylinux.org/main/Download%...%20Release.htm) and boot from that; if it works you have no major hardware issues. This is a complete OS that runs from the CD, even includes a browser; it will run the system even if there's no HD.

May be a long shot, but Allan, I have a few used Dell Optiplex 320s that work just fine. Just the tower, but you pay for shipping, and I'll post one to you. I'll install a fresh Windows 7 on it, too.

Just to clarify CX650, are you looking for a cheap base unit now?
I know a pal of mine will let me have his old base unit for 50 notes, needs a couple of things I can chuck in for gratis to complete - Intel Core 2 Duo rig - can get details if you think it can help mate |

Clarification as requested.
Primarily I am looking for technical advice to help Banger find the fault with the one he has built plus rifling your bits boxes if there are parts needed. Murph, God bless him, has already sent a flat screen monitor and three game discs. Buying a base unit is an option which I am happy to consider remembering my limited income. |

Sorry for not coming back sooner CX650, been waiting for my mate to get back to me.
The machine he will let me have for £50 is an Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 or E6800, 4GB Dual Channel Ram, Nvidia 6600GT video card, Asus Case, dvd burner, Asus motherboard - it needs a hard drive which I am more than happy to offer for gratis(around 320gb or 500gb sata2) and will need loading and software. Sadly I am not near Banger, but if he is prepared to send me the stuff, I will sort it out and get this finished sooner rather than later. I am based in Essex. I have loads of bits and bobs too so a positive outcome either way is highly likely. Sorry I havent got more to hand but I will help where I can, and if you only want the hard drive from me, then let me know, I will send it where you need it, no cost. Regards |

Just a FWIW...that machine up there is almost exactly a clone of my gaming rig's previous incarnation (E6750 tho, o/c'd 5%) and it ran GTL and GTR2 wonderfully, and with most of the eye-candy cranked up fully.

Guess what guys!
The boy let the cat out of the bag that 'Uncle's' friends were building a machine for him. Daddy gave him a laptop. The plonker seems to think that the raising of the child is some kind of competition. ![]() ![]()
