Default 1968 Trans Am car set W.I.P.

I did this set for HEAT and almost completed for NR2003 then lost it just before release...(thanks W10 anniversary update!) so it's still a WIP

I wanted to do it in a sim that would offer the correct car models and also be able to do the U2 class cars as well as the O2 class....this led me to the GTR2 "Historic Trans Am" mod...had to pull the 1969 Javelin from "SCCA Trans Am" mod and then converted the GTL Mercury Cougar mod by Team21 & Friends for that car.

It gets kinda weird after that...

I needed a Rambler American 220 for one car and decided that the Opel Commodore lines looked pretty good, so for that #51 Jim Brown car raced at Mid-Ohio it worked well enough...

Next lost car is the Dodge Dart that Jim Hall drove at War Bonnet. A '64-65 Dodge Dart is huge on my wish list as without it the first year of the Trans Am seems not doable....but for this one car, I thought we would find a substitute to get Mr. Chaparral into the fray...

Just consider it, had Smokie Yunick's Camaro made the show at the Daytona 24 in 1968, we would have had Bruce McLaren and Jim Hall co-driving the thing...wild huh?

So blasphemous as it is, I put Hall in a Ford Falcon... I know, I know...but the car looks pretty sharp...I never cared for the '66 Falcon much, but in this scheme it looks pretty sharp to me...anyway Jim Hall makes the field with these wacky substitutional gymnastics....

Down the road as I do the other race sets, I'll need a '64 Barracuda another lost child from the era, I'll probably use the '68 'Cuda, but I really don't like it as it's huge in-game...

Next issue to tackle, and this one is more critical historically...Craig Fisher brings the Pontiac Firebird into the Trans Am Series in 1968 with a Camaro re-skinned to be a Firebird...later Jerry Titus would make the switch from a Shelby Racing Mustang to a Godsall Firebird...so I need a '68 Firebird. I thought for sure I'd seen one somewhere but I've had no luck finding anything but the '70 Pontiac. I can live with a Falcon faking a Dart but not a '70 Firebird for the '68. Call me picky.

I have the Daytona race set completed save one update I need to make to the #7 Cougar...and well into finishing several other race sets at this point.

There is a 1968 or 69 Firechicken available for GTR2. I'm pretty sure the old GamersCrib site hosted one for their Muscle Car online race meetings.

Race 4 @ Lime Rock set...
Same as the Race 3 set except we trade the #33, #48 and #78 for these three:
#24 Jim Murphey, #33 Bob Grossman, #50 Craig Fisher
Also the #2 Shelby Mustang has David Pearson in.
Parnelli Jones wasn't impressed with the SCCA Trans Am rules...it seems you can't cut corners in Trans Am...and you aren't supposed to pass everyone when the red flag is displayed and park your car on the start finish line...

Your attention to detail is amazing; these cars are terrific.

If you still have a site that will accept a fairly large upload please send me a link to it via email.

Thanks!

I can't seem to find it...man I hate the idea of putting this on a Camaro, I mean Fisher did it in '68, but I want that Chicken nose out there...it was stout and ran so strong...

You quite welcome.

I PM'd Highbank with a DL link as I can't remember if this car is a "legal" conversion or not for a public DL here on NoGrip. I've had the car for soooo long I don't even remember where I grabbed it from and there was no readme so I don't know who done it.

Thanks tons guys, I'm just about to see if it's what we need, Thanks Zipdrive, you save the day!

On another note...I just finished the last Race 5 @ Mid-Ohio car and that Opel just isn't going to fly as a Rambler...it's got the right shape, but those rectangular headlights just blow the whole show...from the rear it says Rambler American, but form the front it says anything but...

My fallback is doing the car on the Falcon again...not pleased with that option but unless I come up with another alternative it's the Falcon...too bad we don't have an earlier year Falcon it would serve the purposes better...\

I'm open to suggestions....???? Preferably a GTR2 car....

OH that red and white car is a 1969 Trans Am Daytona 24Hr car...just so everyone knows...It was actually a Camaro with a reskin to be a Firebird for the 1968 Kent race. The car is famous as it was a Pontiac with Chevy power, this was Trans Am legal because that's how they were sold in Canada, Pontiacs with Chevy V8s.

Yep it's in the game and in the mod too, works great...I'll be doing the #39 Alles Camaro for the race #6 @ Bridgehampton set, then the euclid green number 77 Craig Fisher Firebird and a couple others for the race #7 @ Meadowdale set. Then those two race sets are complete...It's at the point where one car fills in the holes in a couple sets then you add another one or two and they are done...then you get to Riverside and Kent and it's a whole bunch of new drivers and cars to do...different of drivers, many were SCCA club racers giving the Pro level Trans Am a shot...

Attrition played such a heavy role in these races that any local boy had a shot as the big names form the big teams fell out...The Shelby Racing Team;s Ford engines were really bad for blowing up, they sometimes used five engines in a weekend's efforts. These were the Ford engines which they were mandated to use by Ford, the few times they used the Shelby produced power they not only finished but they finished well...it was tragic for the Ford crowd...
