Default Championship CTD

Start GTR2. At the main menu select "Championship". CTD. (I have never run a championship in this install so none has been previously selected.)

I can run practice sessions and race weekends with no problems.

Trace file (truncated for brevity, the entire file is 74k):

FWIW, all the above lines also appear in trace files for successful practice or race sessions, only with the normal lines about saving plr files, etc. at the end.

jg ....check
GTR2\GameData\Championships\Official
GTR2\GameData\Championships\Custom

You can remove the Championship folder altogether and GTR2 should not CTD

Only other thing I know will cause CTD at a menu is no tracks in locations
ie: that would only be relevant if you use PnG Track Linker of course

apparently some of your .car files call files which are not there

1) open all .car files used in your championship with notepad and check one by one if ***.cas and ***.hdc exist or not

2) if step 1) is ok then maybe a tyre file is absent.
So open every .hdc file with notepad and check (tirebrand=) line if corresponding tyre file exists or not

All mods, all cars, all tracks work; I've been using this install for three years - practice, with or without AI, race weekends, everything is fine. Last week was the first time i touched the championship button; I've no idea which championship is causing a problem because I don't even get far enough to select one, the second I click that button I'm dumped back to the desktop.

All those "setup.cpp 1194: Could not find .HDC" have always been there (even in an older install), since all my mods are working I ignore them.

Why I said to cut and paste the entire championship folder to a temp

Start GTR2 and click championship, if it still CTD I'm on the wrong track

If it does not CTD add back either Official or Custom folders to find which CTD
Then process of elimination adding one championship folder at a time till it CTD again

Regardless of hdc or tyres error GTR2 should still boot to the championship menu

Easy to prove, remove the champ folder and sim still boots, at least mine does

DD is right, open championship gdb and check if tracks names match the ones in your locations folder because this is the main cause of direct CTD in general.
Nevertheless your trace file tells you that gtr2 has got issue to load .hdc/.tyr files from your cars mod...maybe you have deleted/moved/overwritten those files one day, or you have got a bad sector on your HDD which cannot read those files anymore

Lol, that's just the problem - which gdb? I've no idea what the game is trying to load because i never get that far. (Not at home so haven't yet tried selecting championship with no championship folders.)

As I said, those lines have been present for ages; and since all my cars, mods, and tracks work well, I've ignored them.

Well, used my preferred backup method - right click on the Official folder, select "add to zip", then delete the folder, repeat for custom folder.

In the sim select championship, the window opens. Cool. Exit.

Right click on Official.zip, select "extract here", that folder is reinstated. Back in sim - CTD. Aha.

Delete Official folder, right click on Custom.zip, extract. Back in sim, championship window opens. Oddly, one championship is shown as "completed", another "in progress" (remember, I've done no championships in this install); at the bottom I see "championships completed, 1000 of 44". Hmm. Exit.

Delete custom folder, reinstate Official, see what's inside ...dozens of gdbs - F1, Champcar, DTM, SCC, WTCC, WSC, etc. Remove everything that doesn't have "official" in title, that leaves me with the default 2003 and 2004 files, an Aussie V8, a Saleen Cup, and a couple of WTCC files. Back in sim, championship loads, those six display (though only the Aussie V8 and Saleen show a track list).

So obviously the recalcitrant file is one of the 21 gdbs which I removed from the Official folder; simply process of elimination to find it now.

Thanks for the input, think I have a handle on the situation now. But a couple of questions:
-What is the difference between a gdb being in the official folder or custom folder?
-Why do the track lists appear for some championships and not for others? (the lists are present in the gdb files)

So DD is right, a faulty gdb championship calls a track that you don't have in locations folder : you shoud check your 21 gdb with notepad one by one...

Stock gtr2 uses official folder for... official 2003/2004 championships, whereas custom folder contains fantasy championships. Most mods use official folder to add their own championship. In fact the folder chosen will set the corresponding display in UI menu : official championship shows under official menu.

Track list shown in menu doesn't come from gdb but from joined txt : sometimes modders copy-paste track list from gdb to txt, while others don't

Well, I ran the Championship Manager and looked at all the gdbs before the previous tests. The only error it found was a missing track in a gdb for a mod no longer installed, so I deleted that gdb. I've not yet put any of those suspect files back in place, they are all from one mod (SCC_ALMS), eight of them covering successive years (the others are "xxxxbackup.gdb" for the same mod).

Lol, I assume then the official folder should only have two gdbs in it. It seems mods toss their files in whichever folder they wish indiscriminately. (I always added mine to "custom".) But if there's no difference in how the game treats files in the different folders it's not a concern.

Hmmm, the two default championships (2003/2004) do not list tracks, nor do the two WTCC mods, all others I've checked do (though it's a stretch to consider one or two races a "championship"; many of these will disappear as I merge smaller mods, containing similar, if not identical, cars into one larger, semi-fictional, series).
