Default Sheik totals Renault F1 car at Dubai

Sheik Bin Sulayem apparently was allowed to do an acceleration test in a Renault F1 car at Dubai GP. Of course for a novice driver an F1 car is a bit of a handful, so he decided to turn the acceleration test into a deceleration test, or a crash test if you want...

The "sheik" in question, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, has supposedly won many rally championships down there so I dont think his driving skills were that poor. Just too much throttle too soon.

Tried to impress the crowd but those F1 cars bite back if you mistreat them!!!

He's also a member of the FIA, and sits on the World Motor Sports Council - so this probably indicates just what these guys know (or don't know) about driving an F1 car..

This is quite a funny read and a good picture of the damage.

Quote:
After 150 metres, as Mr ben Sulayem changed into second gear, the rear of the vehicle veered to the right. Then it went into a clockwise spin and was facing almost backwards when it crashed into the right-hand barrier.

The 14-time Middle East Rally champion was driving the car in the Renault F1 Roadshow
No one was allowed to beat him

Quote:
The crash resulted in substantial damage to the left side of the car, valued at between €1.5million (Dh7.32 million) and €2million.
“The most important thing is that Mohammed was OK and the car is repairable,” said Tarik Ait Said, the operations manager of Renault F1.
Yeah Sure that's important, but so he can pay!

Quote:
Organisers of the Dubai event said they believed the car had struggled to adapt to the road surface at the Autodrome – an F1 certified circuit – after being driven at high speed on a desert road earlier in the day.
Duh! They meant to say the driver but was not allowed too insult the Sheik.

I think this is the same guy who appeared on the Dubai episode of Jeremy Clarksons Motorworld, still shown occasionally on Dave. His collection of cars at the time consisted of a Ferrari F40, F50, Jaguar XJ220 and a Porsche 959 He even took Clarkson for a spin in his F50. Doesn't look like he'll be adding an F1 car to his collection anytime soon
