Default Problems creating/hosting a game with a friend

I have GTL, it's version 1.1.00 that comes with the GTR2/GTL bundle. My friend is running the exact same version. For some reason we cannot join each others games, but we CAN both join other public servers that are already running.

What happens is, when I try to join his game, I click the game in the lobby then hit the join button, and the button turns gray for 10 seconds or so, then lights back up and NOTHING happens at all. The same thing happens to him If I'm hosting and he clicks the join button..

Does anyone have any ideas?

Try this, I've got it but never used it.

When I go online with my friends, we join through Hamachi.

I would first try to host through the lobby.

Your problem is that your router and/or firewall is blocking communication.
Both your router and your firewall will need to allow communication by opening and forwarding ports. The specific ports you will have to look up in the GTL manual.

Find out what firewall and router you have, and look at www.portforward.com how to set your ports (here for routers and here for firewalls). Search for GTR, GTL works similar to GTR.

If you need any more help, let me know.

Thanks for the info.

I am able to join the lobby just fine, and I can join any of the other servers that are in the lobby list. It is only when I try to join my friend's game, or he tries to join mine, that the problem occurs.

I have a Netgear MIMO wireless router (currently physically connected to it with a cable) and the only firewall I have is the Windows XP built-in one, which is completely turned off.

It's a classic port forwarding problem, joining through the lobby and hosting a dedicated server are very different things w.r.t. setting up router and firewall.

You'll need to find the exact model number of your router and look it up in the table.
For example, here's how to set up a NetGear WPN824 for GTR:
http://www.portforward.com/english/r...acing_Game.htm
Just replace the port values with the ones found in the GTL manual.

As for the WinXP firewall, here it is described how to set it up for GTR. Again, just replace the port values with the ones found in the GTL manual.

Notes:
- Port forwarding only needs to be done by the person running the dedicated server.
- Running a dedicated server and the game itself on the same PC may result in connection problems since both the dedicated server and the game itself use the same ports to communicate.
- If running the dedicated server on a separate PC connected to the router, make sure you enter the right IP address in the router to which the ports need to be forwarded, i.e. the local IP address of the PC running the dedicated server.
