I just want to join a race for the first time and that happens. Can someone explain?

Could be that an original file is modified. Do you have any mods installed?

If you're unable to figure out by yourself what are the critical (modified) files, you could try to run this simplish checking tool (GTR2_Verifier). It will check the pointed installation against known file checksums and list suspicious files. It does not change any of the files.

If you're unsure about the resulting log, you can post it here or PM it to me.

Usually the problem is with GAMEDATA\LOCATIONS\SPECIALFX.TEC or missing GTR2 v1.1 update.
